Synopsis

Nobita and his dad buy a big rhinoceros beetle, which he promises to his dad to take good care of it. Later, Doraemon's group finds a strange island where a tribe co-exists with prehistoric creatures long believed to extinct yet preserved by a mythical beetle spirit named Golden Hercules. However, the group has to deal with a group of criminals from the future who intend to capture Golden Hercules for a profit.

The idea of preserving extinct animals on a remote island is a really cool concept, and you can have great potential in a movie with this kind of premise. Unfortunately, so far the all-original Mizuta-era Doraemon films have put too much into their movies that it ruins the potential.

The biggest problem with this movie is that "Dakke" really didn't need to be in the movie, even though he was supposed to be the lead guest character. He never really gets his own moment to shine that is important to the movie, and I struggled to understand why they put him in the movie ...

My overall take: Conceptually appealing, but sad to say, one of my least favorite Doraemon movies.

In this movie, Nobita and his friends travel to the 22nd Century to visit an island that has been converted into a preserve for extinct animals. As both a paleontologist and a Doraemon fan, by all rights I should love this movie. Furthermore, one of the protagonists' new allies in this film is a younger version of Nobita's father who has been displaced in time, an interesting idea! From a conceptual standpoint, this movie shows a lot of promise.
