Anime that contain the otherworldly and enigmatic beings from space!
Even if it's just for a single scene, if it has 'em, it's here.

Sometimes, you just want to see cute characters suffer.
I think I got a good amount of anime here. So, I'm closing suggestions for the stack unless the anime is from the Summer 2023 season or newer. If you have an anime that fits that, send me a message and I'll check it out.

Agh!! Everyone's in emotional and/or physical anguish! These shows end on a mostly bad note, so beware. I mean, if you need a bewaring. I'm guessing not. Spoilers, if that wasn't already apparent.

This is a part of a series of stacks that are about artistic tendencies in anime (and that border the fine line between sophisticated and pretentious).

This stack is a work in progress.

This list includes arthouse (gonna strech this term in this list) that are have multiple episodes that from one story, so compilations like Neo Tokyo or Genius Party will not be in here.
Expect TV anime series and OVAs (they usually have 3-6 episodes 20-40 minutes each).

Regarding TV anime, here you'll find more "modern" series like Kaiba, Haibane Renmeim Flip Flappers, Sonny Boy, Artiswitch which feel a bit different from 80's shows but are still very unique compared to your typical anime so I believe they qualify.

I see this story pattern in anime where young people under 18 who are, not so enthusiastically, made to save the world/a crisis in their storylines. Here’s some anime that fit this trope.

*some have more seasons but not included in this stack

The criteria here is simple: Anime released in any year, with under 160,000 MAL Members, and which I've rated a 7 or higher.

I'm also not including anything that I've already included on my Good Stuff list: https://myanimelist.net/stacks/9517

Pardon my presumptuous and awkwardly worded title meant to shoehorn this into my Obscurities series. In short, if you've seen a lot of the most popular stuff and just need some new recommendations that aren't the most obvious things possible but also not too obscure, here you go.

Series that utilize philosophical approach when it comes to their portrayal of society. Usually featuring "outsider" perspective as a main vehicle for the exploration of the "society" and the philosophy.

Essentially a character that acts outside of the "society", that is at focus of the series, as far as the philosophy of the character goes when it comes to approaching the society. This role can also be called as the "observer". A role that acts as a tool for the audience to be able to gain understanding of the contrast of the philosophies of the "observer" and the supposed "society".

This approach enables that the audience is able to experience the contrast of these two philosophical approaches when it comes to the society and is able to experience often both sides the "observer" and the supposed "society" that is approached through the eyes of the "observer".

These series often also propose an alternative approach to the philosophy that is in contrast with the approach of the "observer" and present us an alternative way of seeing the "observer" through the eyes of the supposed "society"

50 different series from 50 different years. While most of these are my favorites from year to year, I have included some I thought should get a bit more of a spotlight on. It actually took me a lot longer to put this list together than I thought it would, some years had a lot of good picks and it was hard to pick out either a favorite or one that should be highlighted.

Note there are a few years I have not seen a show from (a few years from the 70s) so I will add some from my PTW or that were impactful.

The OVA market dried up as straight to video releases became a thing of the past, which is unfortunate because a lot of interesting and unique anime were released in this format. The point of the list is to feature worthwhile OVAs that are more than just fanservice or shoddy extras for TV series. Sigh, due to the explicit content warning feature, I've excluded Mezzo Forte, but it would be on here otherwise. I should also probably make room for Yukikaze at some point. I think there are too few titles to make a followup list, so I'll just link to any additional titles below:

I've never made a stack before, and I don't really get it, but I think it can help people find new anime and that's great!

I thought this would be a simple one to start with!

Looking for something new to watch this Halloween? Any of these are a great pick!

Anime that I’ve watched that have a similar strange and cool feel to them and are very clearly inspired by Evangelion. Some choice themes include:
-coming of age story told in an unusual and fearful setting
-have an intriguing storytelling style that is purposefully vague to make the reader relate to the protagonist’s confusion to their surroundings
-deconstruct their genre or have elements of genre destruction
-utilizes aliens/monsters as a foil to the protagonists
-homosexuality (this one is a must)
