B. (starts with Utena) I've only seen Madoka Magica and I want to learn more about the genre, but idk if I'm ready for kids' shows.
If at the end you're ready to explore the mahou shoujo genre in full force, jump to Category A.

A. (starts with Precure) I like cute stuff and the magical girls aesthetic, and I can actually handle stuff aimed at little girls.
If at the end this isn't enough for you, congrats, you're into mahou shoujo and you should start doing your own research.

Magical girl anime can be divided into 2 camps:

morning time magical girl: shows which air in the morning targetted at children (doremi, card captor sakura, etc)

late night magical girl: shows which air in the evening or late at night, targeted at adults.

Within those late night anime, some are simply raunchy comedy parodies, some are grimdark edgy interpretations, and some are what I would class as "otaku oriented magical girl", ie, shows which earnestly create a magical girl story line but targetted at otaku.

what counts in this final category is subjective, as the lines between types are blurry, so some of these items may fall somewhat into the grimdark or raunchy comedy categories, but here I try to list everything I think classifies as otaku oriented magical girl anime.

Anime with months in the titles.

This happens more often than you would expect-

*I will not be counting titles using a character’s name which just happens to also be a month (May is a common one). These must be EXPLICITLY REFERENCING THE MONTH to count.

**In addition to this, I will also exclude any songs which just have (year, month) in their entry titles to distinguish them from others of the same name.

No idea why some of these shows aren't tagged with the magical girl theme.

Now including magical boy anime since there really is no tag for that.

Rules
1. No Magical Girlfriend shows (Except for Valkyrie and Dokuro-chan)
2. No International shows (MAL hosts Chinese and Korean productions but in order to save space, only Japanese shows will be included. I may make an international version in the future)
3. No regular fantasy with a female protagonist (ie. My Next Life as a Villainess and Frieren. Shows in a fantasy world with MG like tropes like Rayearth and Leviathan are fine)
4. ABSOLUTELY NO HENTAI! (While Magical Canan began as a Hentai OVA, the TV series version suitable for general audiences will appear. Ecchi like Cutie Honey and Moetan are fine though due to not showing explicit sex/pornographic material)
5. In order to save room, only the first installment of each show will appear. (In terms of Precure, only Futari wa will appear as a representation for the franchise as a whole.)
