Welcome to my Obscurity series, which I hope will help you delve deeper into the depths of anime, particularly the classics.

The criteria here is simple: Anime released in 2001 or earlier, with under 35,000 MAL Members, and which I've rated a 7 or higher.

I'm also not including anything that I've already included on my Good Stuff list: https://myanimelist.net/stacks/9517

It is perhaps worth noting that I rate things entirely on gut feeling. It's just, "I like that, that was good, it gets a 7.", that's the whole process. I can also find enjoyment in just about anything and there's very little that bothers me.

Most expected sports animes won't appear. Purely subjective, duh.

And yes, the three first animes are adapted from the same magazine.

551-558. And finally done. Whew. That was a lot of fun. To think that this interest stack topic would lead to me to basically add nearly half of my completed list. Lol. Glad to realize that I can connect so much anime together. Then there's my on-hold... Lol. That's for another time. Time to continue watching Heartcatch Precure! lol. Its OP and ED are neat.

Shows that aired over 18 years ago. If you watch these shows you're either an oldhead or have an oldhead mindset.

I tried to put together a list of sports (or sports-style) anime featuring women's and girls' sports that don't lean overly much into fanservice/ecchi stuff. Pickings were . . . Slim.

It would be nice if manga like Crimson Hero, Aozora Yell, Girl Got Game/Power!!, and other girls' sports manga got anime.

A cool list of some Shojo and Josei sports manga: https://myanimelist.net/stacks/55928

List of pre-2000 anime available on Crunchyroll. Every anime listed began airing prior to Winter 2000.

Part 1: https://myanimelist.net/stacks/63326

*Not all may be available in every region.
*Not all are available in completion (missing sequels, etc.). Generally, Crunchyroll puts sequels under the same entry as the first season.

Anime on Youtube that have been uploaded by licensors, not reuploading channels, meaning they probably won't get randomly copyright stricken by copyright holders. This stack only lists series available in English.

Mix of dubbed and subbed series, I noted any that either only had an English dub available or had both options as well as any information that seemed relevant. Didn't write down any information on versions subtitled/dubbed to other languages or RAWs. Keep in mind some of these may be region locked.

Let me know if any of the links stop working!

Whether via streaming, DVD, or blu-ray (and excluding laserdisc and VHS due to lack of database), these are the pre-2000s shojo/josei anime that have been officially released in English (ft. Cipher the Video which was originally released in English in Japan ironically). Direct sequels/spin-offs/second seasons/remakes will NOT be included. If you have a good resource listing anime officially released on VHS/Laserdisc in English, I will consider looking through that to add to this list as well.

Some VHS/Laserdisc pre-1990 shojo anime releases I could find:

Blue Sonnet (VHS and Laserdisc)

Honey Honey (aired on TV in the 80s in the US, but only the first 6 episodes got released in English on VHS)

Candy Candy (had first 2 episodes released on VHS edited)

Hana no ko lunlun (had episodes 1-4, 7, 24, 29, and 49-50 released on VHS edited together, with 1-4 also released separately as Flower Angel)
