> OVAs from 1983-1999.
> Doesn't include all OVAs from the 80s & 90s, but all high rated and high popularity OVAs.

> Except for a few, this list doesn't include OVAs that are sequels or side stories of a series, like the Ranma 1/2, Yuu Yuu Hakusho, Urusei Yatsura, Dragon Ball Z, Hunter x Hunter Pilot, Mobile Suit Gundam Wing, One Piece, Fushigi Yuugi, Slayers & Violence Jack OVAs. (Not enough slots)

> The only hanime OVA I'd include is 'A Kite'. There's a censored version, so it doesn't feel like an hanime.
> Dallos is the first OVA and was directed by Oshii Mamoru, the director of Ghost in the Shell. It was created in 1983.
> Oshii Mamoru also directed the OVAs: Tenshi no Tamago, Twilight Q, Kidou Keisatsu Patlabor and Gosenzo-sama Banbanzai!, all are from the 80s.

> 28 Other OVAs not on this list but look interesting:
Genocyber
M.D. Geist
Lily C.A.T.
AD Police Files
Armitage III
Gunsmith Cats
Oh! My Goddess
Be-Bop Highschool
Gosenzo-sama Banbanzai!

I love them.
Some of these technically aren't kids.

Before the likes of Saint Seiya, Dragon Ball Z and Pokemon conquering the kids in the west, it was actually Akira that opened the door and made people realize that the cartoons coming from Japan weren't what you would expect from Disney or your TV channels.
A huge flood of VHS tapes came showing animations with mature themes, absurd plots, and enough graphic sex and violence to make parents freak out... what a glorious time!
They don't make cartoons like this anymore.

This is a comprehensive list with stuff from very good to very trashy, but all in the same spirit.
Some early 00's also included.

ps: I also recommend, but can't include here, Kage (OVA).

Glorious 80's and 90's (Sci-Fi, Neo-Noir and Crime Drama)

Buzz was a Spanish subscription television channel produced by AMC Networks International Iberia. Its programming focused on horror content, both in current series and movies.

Despite not being Spanish, I have managed to appreciate the content that this channel transmitted along with several of its dubbings into Castilian Spanish, which, from my point of view, are mostly worth it.

The best horror anime (in my opinion) that I've completed thus far. AKA horror anime I rated 7/10 or higher. Some are not labelled as horror on MAL. Some are not really that spooky either. I also haven't seen every horror anime (yet).
Organized roughly by my rankings.

Part 2 (rated 6-5/10): https://myanimelist.net/stacks/64018

I also like Sankarea and Gakkou no Kaidan/Ghost Stories (dub) but I don't think of them as horror, so I didn't include them.

Also Memories is just referring to Magnetic Rose short film and Neo Tokyo is just referring to The Running Man and The Order to Stop Construction.

Horror shows I haven't finished yet + my current score (may change):
Kenpuu Denki Berserk (7-8/10)
Mononoke (6-7/10)
Jigoku Shoujo (6-7/10)
Shingeki no Kyojin (6-7/10)
Koutetsujou no Kabaneri (6-7/10)
Kiseijuu: Sei no Kakuritsu (6/10)
Red Garden (6/10)
Umineko no Naku Koro ni (6-5/10)
Tokyo Ghoul (5/10)

I’m using the term “horror” very loosely so anything that is disturbing/creepy or aims to be counts.

Rumiko Takahashi, The Manga Queen, is a Mangaka born in 1957 that in 1978 started her career in the pages of Weekly Shounen Sunday, and it's been a constant succes since then. There has been too much series that people usuakky don't know where to start.
So i'm here to help you, when you finish reading this guide you'll have the entire data you need to know what to do.

My personal recommendation, start watching Maison Ikkoku, it's her best work. The best way to get to know an author is to start with their best work.
