As far as I'm concerned there's an anime about pretty much everything if you look hard enough: diving, underwear design, insurance investigation (yup!) and don't even get me started on cooking. So there, picked titles with main characters directly involved and at least some focus on whatever they're doing for a living or a hobby or both.

Do you like watching trashy 80/90s OVAs and movies that are violent, stupid, and nonsensical? Well this list is for you. Some of these are pretty famous in the community like Violence Jack and M.D. Geist, but I made sure to really dumpster dive for some obscure trash for all of you garbage connoisseurs out there.

I've never made a stack before, and I don't really get it, but I think it can help people find new anime and that's great!

I thought this would be a simple one to start with!

Before the likes of Saint Seiya, Dragon Ball Z and Pokemon conquering the kids in the west, it was actually Akira that opened the door and made people realize that the cartoons coming from Japan weren't what you would expect from Disney or your TV channels.
A huge flood of VHS tapes came showing animations with mature themes, absurd plots, and enough graphic sex and violence to make parents freak out... what a glorious time!
They don't make cartoons like this anymore.

This is a comprehensive list with stuff from very good to very trashy, but all in the same spirit.
Some early 00's also included.

A mix of 80's & 90's ova series that I have seen.
Some great, some not so much... you be the judge of what's good though.

After the release and success of Akira in the US and UK, Western companies like Central Park Media and Manga Entertainment began licensing as many films and OVAs as they could get their hands on to satiate a market hungry for strange, violent animation. Some of them were genuinely great and are still regarded as classics to this day, but the vast majority were schlock made to appeal to the lowest common denominator. This was essentially the anime equivalent to the American grindhouse/exploitation boom of the 70s and early 80s, where films were marketed on their ability to shock and provoke.

Here are a handful I feel would serve as a good primer to this specific moment in anime history. While many of these films and OVAs are undeniably terrible, this is an era I do have quite a soft spot for and there are definitely some gems worth checking out too.

For the sake of including as much as I could, I've only listed one entry from each franchise/series (generally the first installment). Some entries have a manga that came out shortly before they premiered, but those aren't really adaptions since the production of the anime predates creation of the manga.

Sekai Douwa Anime Zenshuu is dated as either 1986 or 1990 on different sites, so I will keep on this list for now.

the list mainly includes feature films over 1h20 but also some short and medium-length films/OAVs, which are also worth a watch!

Probably wanna turn these off when babysitting your little cousin.

This has less to do with the maturity of the story and more to do with things like heavy profanity, blood/gore, sexual content, and lone embarrassing moments.

P.S., This list could also be named "Not for the Parents" now that I think about it.
