For (what was supposed to be) my very first anime stack, here is a list for fellow anime collectors who may have been a fan of my mahou shoujo manga stack.
I wish anyone seeing this luck in finding old DVD copies of these series—it can get disgustingly expensive really fast.

Part 2: https://myanimelist.net/stacks/78540

Mahou shoujo, translated directly to "magical girl"—a genre featuring many young girls receiving magical powers and (more often than not) a dress that's as cute as the aesthetic! Can be treated as a rec list for those new to the genre, as many of these are considered as classics of the genre and may even still be on today's streaming services. Not meant to be a complete/definitive list.

WORK IN PROGRESS: I will add descriptions and maybe add more later. (May even make a Part 2.)

Disclaimer: Magical girl series that received DVD releases for the English audience are prioritized in this list. Most of the series listed here will also have Blu-Ray releases, but I am mainly noting older DVD releases from the 2000s (and earlier); hence why Lyrical Nanoha and its second season are listed here, but not its third season and later which have recently gotten Blu-Ray releases here in the West after being unacknowledged for years. Despite that, I try to list series that can be available on DVD as complete and (hopefully) easily as possible.
Also, expect tons of older shoujo and/or "genre played straight" (as in not that many parodies) examples because of the older DVD priority AND my admittedly obvious bias for them.

This stack contains licensed titles that have been OUT OF PRINT and series that apply will be indicated as such. This means it is near impossible to find these new without destroying your wallet, but there is still a chance in the ever-growing secondhand market! To find these older, hard-to-find series, I recommend the following sites:
https://www.abebooks.com/
https://www.alibris.com/
https://www.biblio.com/

These are sites for shopping for books, but I have found DVD listings on Alibris every now and then.

Akiyuki Shinbo is a Japanese animator, director, compositional writer, and storyboard artist. Best known for his works with Shaft, he has attained international recognition for his unique visual style and storytelling methods.

Shinbo began his career in the early 1980s as an animator, but his true rise to fame in the industry occurred when he received the opportunity to direct for series produced by Pierrot at the turn of the decade and early 90s. His unique style developed across the studio's productions, cultivating in Yu Yu Hakusho, which led to his debut as a series director with the J.C.Staff television series Metal Fighter Miku (1994). Over the next several years, Shinbo developed his directorial style through numerous avenues in the industry; and the pure form of his style has been described as coalescing in series like The SoulTaker (2001) and Le Portrait de Petit Cossette (2004).

In 2004, Shinbo was invited by newly appointed Shaft president Mitsutoshi Kubota to collaborate with the studio as a director. Since the newfound collaborative effort's debut with Tsukuyomi: Moon Phase (2004), he has mentored various directors and won numerous awards for his productions with the studio. His notable directorial works with Shaft include the Monogatari series (2009–present), Puella Magi Madoka Magica (2011), and March Comes In like a Lion (2016–2018).

List of mecha anime with female main characters, from oldest to newest. I have excluded sequels for most of these to prevent me from having to make 5 different stacks.

If there's a mecha anime with a female MC I've forgotten to list (or an anime that is on this stack but shouldn't be) then message me or comment on my profile and I'll add/remove it.

Rules
1. No Magical Girlfriend shows (Except for Valkyrie and Dokuro-chan)
2. No International shows (MAL hosts Chinese and Korean productions but in order to save space, only Japanese shows will be included. I may make an international version in the future)
3. No regular fantasy with a female protagonist (ie. My Next Life as a Villainess and Frieren. Shows in a fantasy world with MG like tropes like Rayearth and Leviathan are fine)
4. ABSOLUTELY NO HENTAI! (While Magical Canan began as a Hentai OVA, the TV series version suitable for general audiences will appear. Ecchi like Cutie Honey and Moetan are fine though due to not showing explicit sex/pornographic material)
5. In order to save room, only the first installment of each show will appear. (In terms of Precure, only Futari wa will appear as a representation for the franchise as a whole.)

Fun Fact: Mahou Shoujo shows came to be because Sally was inspired by Bewitched. Without Bewitched, the Magical Girl genre might've never have existed in it's current form. (Yes, Akko did predate Sally in the manga world but the genre may have never happened without the creation of Sally the Witch). Of course, Sailor Moon paved the way for warrior shows to take center stage. Without Usagi and friends, Majokko shows and Idol shows would likely become more dominant than today. (I know there were some warrior shows like Cutie Honey and Devil Hunter Yohko that aired before 1992 but they only appeared once in a blue moon. Until Sailor Moon showed up of course)

These titles may have been overshadowed by big hits, but they stand out for unique storytelling, artistic style, or genre innovation. Each includes a short description. This is subjective, meant to explore overlooked gems and celebrate the era’s diversity.
