Charlotte

If not for his ability to take over people's mind and body, Yuu Otosaka would be an ordinary high school student. Though it only lasts for five seconds at a time, Yuu's mysterious power allowed him to cheat his way to the top of his class and enter a prestigious high school, where he continues his dishonest acts.

His shenanigans are eventually stopped by Nao Tomori—the headstrong student council president from Hoshinoumi Academy—who sees through his deceit. Through coercion, Nao convinces Yuu to transfer to Hoshinoumi and join the student council. Hoshinoumi Academy is secretly an institution created for adolescents who possess supernatural abilities—with the student council serving as a means of locating those who abuse their powers.

With Yuu begrudgingly assisting in council affairs, the group sets out to find and protect new ability users from harm. However, as they further investigate the abilities, their findings entangle them in far more complicated matters than they could ever imagine.

First off, this is definitely not a romance. There's a sliver of it at the end, but not enough to justify a "romance" label.

That being said, this show is one of the better ones. Two main areas stood out to me most:
1. The story; which is one of those wonderfully interesting and innovative tales that are a big part of why I fell in love with anime. Pacing, however, was where it suffered. Much like Steins:Gate, the first several episodes moved like a moderately standard, maybe even a bit slow, slice of life, with an added element of the supernatural for some spice. ... Not unusual, until that one episode suddenly hits you in the face with a brick (also like Steins:Gate) and things go very dark, VERY fast. From that point on, everything felt rushed and crammed together. There were many instances of “we’re going to implement this highly specific and moderately insane plan because…. We have no choice!” Yeah that’s not going to cut it, I’m afraid. Take an extra few minutes to give us some justification, raise the stakes if you have to, do SOMETHING to make this plot device feel more organic. Don’t just drag the audience by the ear from one event to the next. That last episode has an entire season's worth of material crammed into it, and it really needed its own season to do it justice. Not only would we get to delve into the protagonist's experiences and mental state throughout, while witnessing the glorious awesomeness that he was capable of(there was so much cool stuff we could’ve seen!), but we could also get the epilogue the show deserves and perhaps even do justice to the romance aspect as well. There was so much that could have been added.The story itself is filled with great ideas, but wasn't given the time it needed. 8/10

2. Character development is the second thing that stands out to me. I'll admit I'm a bit of a stickler for this, since one dimensional characters are so stupidly common, but this show does deliver. Our hero suffers, falls, gets help, overcomes, rises up, and at no point does it feel rushed or dragged out. In fact, he turns into a total anti-hero at one point, which only makes him more compelling. Development in other characters, however, is relatively minimal; which for me was both good and bad. It was good in that I didn't once have to drudge through filler episodes dedicated some side character's childhood trauma, which is the motivation behind them yelling extra loud during this one sequence etc. etc. The downside of it was, as mentioned earlier, the overall rushed feel of the second half of the show. I would've been ok exploring into some of these characters more. Like that doctor guy; he was cool. 9/10

Bottom line: well worth the watch. I'll definitely watch this again. I imagine its shortcomings were mostly caused by budget constraints and higher ups putting pressure on the creators to meet deadlines. They likely refused to promise another season, which would explain the overstuffed nature of the ending.

Mixed Feelings

This anime is extremely hard to not spoil, so I can't explain much about what the anime is about.

All I can say is that the first few episodes are hard to get into, as it seems somewhat cringey and similar to Chuunibyo. Once you get past the first half, however, the story is absolutely a gem and it had a great twist and ending. Overall, it's somewhat rushed though. I wish this anime could have been longer, as each episode can feel like you're skipping through a lot of story and more like a summarization of what happens. Hell, the last episode on its own ... could be its own series. The relationship and character building feels somewhat weak as well for being an anime centralized around character development and growth.

If you have a ton of time and nothing else to do, I'd give it a shot. If you don't have much time and aren't sure if you'd be into it, this might not be worth watching.

This drama is to watch while you wait for your other drams to release their episodes. This was only to pass the time.

The first 9 episodes were actually okay with them dealing with ability wielders, even if the powers were basic and common and we didn't really got emotionally involved with any of them, it went downhill from there and fast with new characters popping up even when they haven't fleshed out the ones we already knew.

Yu, the main character I liked him in the first episode, that was the only time I liked any of the characters. We never got attached to anyone as ... none of the characters were developed.
