Kuroko no Basket Movie 4: Last Game

Hailing from America, Jabberwock—a street basketball team with skills comparable to those of the NBA—has come to Japan to play an exhibition match against Strky, a team of former third-year students who once played in the Interhigh and Winter Cup. However, due to the vast difference in skill, Jabberwock easily wins. Their captain, Nash Gold Jr., mocks the basketball style of all players in Japan by comparing them to monkeys.

Infuriated by the nasty comment, Kagetora Aida challenges them to a revenge match. Because of pride and the belief that the results will be no different, Nash accepts the challenge. Kagetora then assembles Vorpal Swords, a team composed of the Generation of Miracles, including Kuroko Tetsuya and Kagami Taiga, for they are the only ones who stand a chance against a foe that seems unbeatable from every angle.

Story:
Coming into this anime with no background in basketball whatsoever, I was surprised by how easily it pulled me in. Taking this pretty basic premise for a sports anime, the story elevates it with well-paced matches and steady character progressions. The narrative is all about competition, personal growth, and the mental challenges involved in high-pressure games. Arguably one of the most intriguing themes present is “the Zone,” a height of intense concentration that plays a major part in several matches. Even without revealing specific events, the show's approach to the idea adds intensity and helps highlight the emotional weight behind each game.

Art:
The vibrant color palette ... gives energy to the animation, especially in fast-paced moments of scenes. Movements during matches feel dynamic, and the visual emphasis on momentum and power enhances the action. Character designs are distinct and expressive, allowing both emotional and competitive moments to land effectively.

Sound:
The soundtrack perfectly complements the series's tone; it enhances the tension during games and is soft while in reflective moments. Sound effects, particularly for high-impact scenes, add a lot to the atmosphere. The voice acting is consistent and adds character to the cast without feeling overblown.

Characters:
The characters are accessible, even to those who are not inclined towards basketball. Their motivations are clear, their strengths and weaknesses are probed, and the series takes the time to show how they react to challenges. However, some of these personalities do lean toward familiar tropes, although their development through practice and matches does keep them interesting. The series also closely ties their growth with the theme of pushing limits mentally and emotionally, adding weight to the narrative. Enjoyment: Having never cared about basketball, I was surprised at just how engrossing this anime was. The momentum of the matches, along with the focus on mental states like "the Zone," made it an exciting and accessible experience. It keeps you excited by the thrill of competition without knowing anything about the sport. Overall: This anime succeeds not just as a sports title but as a character-driven story of determination, skill, and focus. With its intense matches, great presentation, and easy-to-understand explanations, it's easy to enjoy whether you're a newcomer or a long-time sports fan. Even for a person who had never watched basketball, it manages to be memorable and impactful.

Mixed Feelings

Could have been better but is worth watching.

It was very cool, to be honest. It's a film that assumes it's fan service and doesn't overdo it. It's true that it can be a bit dreamy to imagine the Miracle Generation reunited + Kagami in a final match.
On the other hand, as long as it's fan service, there was room for improvement. For example, I'd have liked to see Momoi and Riko more in the spotlight. We've only seen Kagetora a few times, and they're practically absent. Yet Momoi, as we tend to forget, is just as much part of the Miracle generation as the others. ... I'd have liked to see her united with Riko so that we could see their analytical skills combined, to see how that could have helped bring victory. It's wasted potential and it's a shame.
It's not helped by the film's bizarre pacing: it starts very, very quickly, the team is formed after 13 minutes and the match begins after 21 minutes. This leaves no time to see the preparation, how the players are going to work together when it's the first time (all the players have changed since Teiko + Kagami is there too), how they intend to beat the Jaggerwolk, it would have been a good time to highlight Momoi and Riko but no, the match has to start very quickly, too quickly. The film couldn't last any longer, so I'd have preferred 10 minutes less of the match for 10 minutes more of preparation.

One last thing that's weird is the Jaggerwolk themselves... They're just ***. No particular goals apart from winning, just pieces of shit who insult everyone (and eat pockies at the casino). They're just a pretext for fan service, but did they have to be hollow characters?

Still, it's not a bad piece of work, it's cool to watch, the tension is fairly well managed even if the match doesn't end in the most amazing way (nothing will equal the match against Aomine in season 2) and it ends pretty well the story we've been following throughout the series.

As a huge fan of basketball and of the 3 seasons of knb, this movie was a huge disappointment. The story was super predictable and it wasn't that relatable to real life basketball. They discredit the spirit of streetball. Sure it's trying to make one player look really good, and they try to embarrass the opposing player, but irl street ball teams that are INVITED to other countries, are super nice. They have tons of fans all over and treat them all greatly since it's because of them that they are able to play ball for a living. Personally, it would have been a much ... better movie if it were more like a healthy competition game where both teams are trying to do the sport of basketball justice. No need to make the opponents such villains. This made things super unrelatable for me and made everything seemed forced.
