Tsugumomo

In Japanese folklore, a "tsukumogami" is an object that has gained a soul, becoming alive and self-aware. There are two types of tsukumogami: the mature "tsugumomo," who have developed through long years of harmony with their owners, and the aberrant "amasogi," premature spirits that are only born to grant the destructive wishes of certain people.

Kazuya Kagami has never gone without his mother's obi after her death. Be it at home or school, he keeps it safe with him at all times. One day, he nearly loses his life when a wig amasogi attacks him. When all seems to be over, his treasured obi defends him, transforming into a beautiful girl. She introduces herself as Kiriha, a tsugumomo owned by Kazuya's mother.

With Kiriha's arrival, Kazuya enters a reality he has never seen before, a world with gods and tsukumogami.

Huh, i am not sure what sort of expectations i had from this show,but... i guess i was pleasantly surprised.

Tsugumomo advertised itself as an ecchi show mainly. Now, is it an ecchi show? Yeah, there's quite a number of spicy scenes. And not just ecchi,but a league above(not specifically in quality though,but how explicit it is). Of course, those actions aren't really shown, unless you count the shadow in the school's cabinet, that totally showed what happend,or the dialogue in the cologne episode(bath). It's just above the middle ground compared to most ecchi in .... severity? I guess that's a good enough term. But honestly ... after watching this show and gettin hooked up on it, i'd watch it without any of the ecchi scenes no issue.

The story is nothing that complicated,or trying to go for a great mystery, but it's not some absolute jumble either. It's just good. Intresting enough that you'd never check how much of an episode is left really. In this world, objects and hair specifically can gain sentience and power. And on that note, easily one of the worst anime worlds you can live in. Pure dread. But as a passive observer, it makes for a very intresting world.

Now, for 90% of the time show's gonna be a really lighthearted watch, couldn't make a sad drama ecchi after all. But that doesn't mean there are absolutely no heartfelt moments,or serious ones. They do one of each in at least an episode,and they really succeed in my humble opinion.I mean in the sisters arc the implication alone is ... depressing.Imma leave it at that. The comedy is allright, nothing too crazy, but it really peaks in the Taguri game. That narrator and the music being so serious man... Just gold.

Now for the characters. They can't all be winners,but if i had to choose, Kiriha's a top tier waifu and a top tier character to boot. She starts off being rather .. rough to the MC,but later on it's all the good stuff. Of course, this is one of the shows where the MC gets hit for the ecchi stuff, so that's not really a kiriha only thing after all. The MC himself is surprisingly good,not something i'd expect from an ecchi show.Of course he still suffers from some cliches like being dense. Still not an issue overall. But another standout outside Kiriha has to be Osamu. Really like the guy. He's always helping. But not in a deus-ex-machina kind of way ,and that makes it so much better.

The animation is also good. Far better then what you'd expect an ecchi show, especially during fights and all that. Don't expect an UFOTABLE obviously,but it's good. Satisfying even.


So yeah, the story holds,the cast is solid,the animation is also good,i really recommend this. Watch this with no worries and my blessing.

Mixed Feelings

This is an unusual one.

First, it can be quite perverted. Characters end up in very weird/awkward situations. It is something half-way between comedy jokes of To Love Ru, and blunt humor of something like prison school... actually it is quite hard to describe it properly. It is as if it tried to use bluntest lewd jokes without making situation look "sexy". I'd say it is quite clsoe to the kind of humor used in "Kyou no 5 no 2".

Second, for some strange reason it has very high quality animation in fight scenes and fairly amazing music. The fights- and there are fights - can ... put some of shounen titles to shame. Animation in fights is extremely fluid and well done, and music complements the fights really well.

So, there you have it.

Story: 6/10:

Acutlaly a somewhat interesting premise and an unusual one. There's continuous character development through it, so it isn't some sort of silly "collect all romantic partners" anime. Character goes through period of growth, gradually improves, new characters are introduced... it is interesting.

Art: 6/10:
The art is close to the standard modern art (triangular faces and stuff), but the animation is really well done. Basically, it looks somewhat simple, but does not look low budget, and it is surprisingly well animated.

Sound: 7/10:
The battle theme is really well done and very pwoerful. It is something that is worth of being in a very well done fighting game, like blazblue. Heavy and powerful. Perhaps not as powerful as the main t heme of first ajin, or as cheerful tracks of "monster musume to iru nichijou"... but it is definitely about average as far as anime tracks go.

Character: 5/10:
They're amusing, have some sort of personality and aren't carton cutouts, but it is hard to say much about them. They're story devices first and character seconds. So they behave according to their role, and pick behaviors that would be most comedic.... so you'd end up seeing them less as characters and more like comedy elements.

Enjoyment: 6/10:
It is oddly perverted, but once you get over it, it has interesting moments, and surprisingly good fighting scenes and music. Long story short, there's much worse anime out of there.

Overall: 6/10:
Overall, it is worth a watch, but you need to have a very high tolerance to lewd and ecchi jokes. Basically, if you laughed at "Kyou no 5 no 2" and saw "To Love Ru" and liked it, you'll probably like this title. It isn't really ecchi, but the jokes can be quite perverted.

So... interesting work, but definitely not for everybody.

If you've seen any supernatural ecchi harem comedy before, you'll know exactly what to expect from Tsugumomo. Unfortunately, the only ways it stands out from a dozen other shows like it are negative. The characters are mostly annoying, the character designs and art look surprisingly dated for a show released in 2017, and the story is skin and bones even by usual "become chosen one, train, fight rival" shounen standards. The jokes are the same unfunny ecchi humor that you've seen in a thousand other shows. Kiriha's pudding song was the only thing in the entire season that made me laugh. ... You get the occasional creative idea resulting from the amasogi, the spirits that the protagonist fights. One particularly good one is the episode where the school is turned into a visual novel. Unfortunately these occasional good ideas are never fully capitalized on, and too few and far between to salvage the show.

Bottom line, if you want to see Kiriha topless, then you may as well watch it I guess. Otherwise, there's almost nothing to recommend in this show, and plenty of nearly identical but better shows of this type are out there if you find the concept interesting.
