Made in Abyss

The Abyss—a gaping chasm stretching down into the depths of the earth, filled with mysterious creatures and relics from a time long past. How did it come to be? What lies at the bottom? Countless brave individuals, known as Divers, have sought to solve these mysteries of the Abyss, fearlessly descending into its darkest realms. The best and bravest of the Divers, the White Whistles, are hailed as legends by those who remain on the surface.

Riko, daughter of the missing White Whistle Lyza the Annihilator, aspires to become like her mother and explore the furthest reaches of the Abyss. However, just a novice Red Whistle herself, she is only permitted to roam its most upper layer. Even so, Riko has a chance encounter with a mysterious robot with the appearance of an ordinary young boy. She comes to name him Reg, and he has no recollection of the events preceding his discovery. Certain that the technology to create Reg must come from deep within the Abyss, the two decide to venture forth into the chasm to recover his memories and see the bottom of the great pit with their own eyes. However, they know not of the harsh reality that is the true existence of the Abyss.

Criminally underrated. This should get more attention than it already does and I wonder why it doesn't.

If I had to guess it's the fanbase scaring away potential new viewers by making them think Made in Abyss is disturbing. Yes, the story is less cute than the characters may portray, but in my opinion it's not ''disturbingly'' gruesome. It's brutal and raw. It's like the writer's fantasy has no limits, and the storyline knows no boundaries. This makes you don't have a clue what's coming, and that's exactly what makes this show so bloody addictive. Nowhere in the show I felt like what was happening ... was off-putting, or unnecessary to the development to the story. But that may be a subjective matter.


Conclusion: Watching these adorable characters go through such a heartbreaking, yet wholesome adventure, is something you should definitely give a try.

Mixed Feelings

Made in abyss is a very creative anime where a civilization exists around a giant chasm that beckons people in, but is increasingly harder to climb out of as people descend. Our very young protagonist, Riko, wants to go down because she receives what are likely the last writings of her mother, a famous explorer of the abyss that descended beyond a point of no return.

The animation and sound design are good, nothing to note.

The story is filled with compelling, intense, shocking, moving and action-packed moments, it kept me intrigued from beginning to end and wanting to know more. I must warn you, though, not ... only is this anime kind of gory and hard to digest, our protagonists are children. But what bothers me the most is the frequent sexualization they get, it's small things like how they're punished by being strung up naked to humiliate them (even if we don't see them naked), or how Reg, the other main character who is mostly a boy (with the plausible deniability of "well, technically he's probably not even human and very old...") gets horny very easily and clearly desires Riko.

There were a lot of moments that got a "hmmm" out of me, but didn't take much enjoyment away as they can be easily brushed off as the young kids being innocent or the culture of the abyss being totally different. However after watching the movie and 2nd season I can confirm that the author has a strong and clear pedophilic bias. Also, a story so filled with mysteries requires a great writer to keep it engaging as more and more is unveiled, I don't think very highly of the writer after seeing how the quality increasingly suffers as the story goes on.

This first part is very good but don't expect it to continue that way. If you don't mind the weird pedo vibes that sometimes come up, and a abysmal downgrade in quality in the continuations then go ahead and watch, this anime is very famous so maybe it's worth the watch just to see what the hype is all about, as I said the premise is great and the execution is initially very well done, I'm giving it an 8 judging only these first 13 episodes as a standalone work, without taking into consideration what comes next, but just FYI, I gave the 2nd season a 3.

From the perspective of art direction/animation, characters, voice performance and world-building this anime is very good. I felt a connection to its characters and a fascination with the world introduced, where what little we see of the abyss hints at a greater, cosmic world beyond the season itself, replete with peril and mystery. Where the show loses me is in the occasional sexualisation of the characters, who are children. I won't exaggerate here, it isn't as if it is so explicit and outrageous as to be completely unacceptable, yet I can't deny it did feel wrong to me and uncomfortable to watch. Initially I was ... prepared to rationalise this away, thinking, "I suppose it could simply be a show that is intended for people who are roughly the same age as the characters". Although, even on that front, great anime targeted at younger audiences and indeed featuring younger characters, often has a level of quality and thematic exploration that appeals even to older audiences, and crucially, doesn't involve this questionable sexualisation. What I eventually learned, though, is that this is not an anime that is intended for children; it tackles deeply disturbing themes of existential despair and suffering, not simply gore and violence. So with that in mind I can't in good conscience reconcile the somewhat creepy sexual themes of the show. The matter changes when you consider that it is actually something more geared towards adult audiences. It's a shame because if it weren't for that, I would continue watching. Aside from this element the show feels special to me, as if it might otherwise be a genuine must-watch anime. My score reflects my belief in the overall quality of the season with just one point removed for the themes I mentioned. Realistically, due to my own personal values I would usually regard a work is invalidated due to containing this kind of representation of children, but I feel it's somewhat complicated as far as the actual scoring goes since it's still a great show in my view. It's difficult to score for that reason, but as a final word, I wouldn't actually recommend it to anyone because of this.
