Kino no Tabi: The Beautiful World - The Animated Series

When 15-year-old Kino is feeling weighed down by heavy thoughts, one thing always manages to cheer her up: traveling. Nothing fills her heart with joy like exploring the beautiful, wonderful world around her and the fascinating ways people find to live. However, Kino is not as helpless as her cute appearance and courteous demeanor suggest. Armed with "Cannon" and "Woodsman," her trusted handguns, Kino is not afraid to kill anyone who would dare to get in her way. Always by her side is her best friend and loyal companion Hermes, a sentient motorcycle, who supports Kino through the sorrows and hardships of their journey. Together, they travel the vast countryside with the shared goal of always moving forward, and a single rule: never stay in one country for more than three days.

As Kino and Hermes encounter new people and learn the rules of their civilizations, they grow and find out more about their own values and virtues. But as Kino slowly discovers the world around her, she also finds herself facing dangers that linger within the vast unknown.

I'm particularly passionate about short story-style works. Most, if not all, of them I've seen have been memorable in different but special ways. For me, Kino no Tabi joins that memory and enters my list of favorites with glory.

It's been a long time since I felt so... consumed, involved, immersed, happy, and at peace after finishing an anime. Anime like this gives me that feeling of, "I think I should start a new hobby, or maybe a new college. Maybe I can become a backpacker." You know what I'm talking about? The feeling of wanting to live, of thinking, "Thank you for giving me the ... opportunity to watch this." Sometimes that happens, but not always. I'm glad I put my laziness aside and decided to watch Kino no Tabi. Thank goodness.

I've talked a lot about feelings and sensations, so let's get to the story a little, shall we?

Kino no Tabi, or Kino's Journey, follows the traveler Kino and her talking motorcycle, Hermes. Kino visits different countries, spending about three days in each. In some episodes, Kino is a spectator, and we see things from other characters' perspectives, but the story doesn't let us miss her, swallowing us up before we have the chance. These aren't ordinary trips, and she doesn't pass through ordinary countries with ordinary governmental and social structures. Each country has its own peculiarities that, if explored in a different way, could easily be a Black Mirror episode.

Mixed Feelings

I’d be lying if I said that I didn’t somewhat enjoy this as a KJ fan, but as I expected, it is definitely an inferior version compared to the 2003 OG. For one, I felt like it severely lacked the dreamlike aesthetic and vibe that made that version so special (It’s also lacking the subtlety as well). This remake on the other hand just looked like any other generic anime from the 2010’s, which was disappointing to say the least.

As for the stories, there were three episodes that they remade from the OG but I felt like those weren’t as good as they were before, ... and the newer stories that weren’t in the OG anime, while interesting, I imagine were better executed in the light novels. Also the structuring and pacing of this series felt weird to me, like the Field of Sheep story was fun but why was that the last episode? Also why was the Coliseum arc ONE EPISODE?!?

This remake was still not the worst thing ever, but I think it’s best that you just watch the 2003 version instead or read the light novels if you can find them on the internet.

I hope no one accidentally watches this first instead of the original one. I can't comprehend how a rebuild of such a legendary anime can be this bad.

Every character feels emptied, each remade episode is ruined, all new episodes are terrible and make you question what you are watching. No thematic messages are conveyed, episodes only rely on plot twists which are the most uninteresting ones I have ever seen in anime.

It is a huge talent to take such source material and create this bad of a sequal.

If you have watched this sequal first, then I strongly recommend you to watch the original. It ... is completely different.
