Kimi no Suizou wo Tabetai

The aloof protagonist: a bookworm who is deeply detached from the world he resides in. He has no interest in others and is firmly convinced that nobody has any interest in him either. His story begins when he stumbles across a handwritten book, titled Living with Dying. He soon identifies it as a secret diary belonging to his popular, bubbly classmate Sakura Yamauchi. She then confides in him about the pancreatic disease she is suffering from and that her time left is finite. Only her family knows about her terminal illness; not even her best friends are aware. Despite this revelation, he shows zero sympathy for her plight, but caught in the waves of Sakura's persistent buoyancy, he eventually concedes to accompanying her for her remaining days.

As the pair of polar opposites interact, their connection strengthens, interweaving through their choices made with each passing day. Her apparent nonchalance and unpredictability disrupts the protagonist's impassive flow of life, gradually opening his heart as he discovers and embraces the true meaning of living.

The anime itself is quite debatable at certain moments, especially when it comes to the protagonist. However, the work stands out among others by delivering a sudden emotional impact to the viewer — something rare in this genre. At the same time, it remains fluid, never rushing through details or “forcing new information” into the story, except at the peak of the plot, where this break in pattern was necessary. I didn’t set any expectations when I started watching it, and halfway through I found myself wondering, “Why did I take so long to watch this masterpiece?” This is the only anime that has ever ... made me cry. I regret watching it only now — it has become my favorite anime. I highly recommend watching and rewatching it.

Mixed Feelings

I didn't really enjoy the movie. While the emotional tone is consistent and the visuals are beautiful, the story itself felt quite predictable and, in my opinion, not particularly deep. The characters follow familiar tropes, and much of the plot unfolds in a way that didn't surprise me.

The only truly unexpected part was the twist at the end, which did catch me off guard. Still, even that wasn’t enough to leave a lasting impact. Overall, I wouldn't strongly recommend it. Because the story is just below average.

That said, it does have a few touching moments that some viewers might appreciate more than I did.

This movie presents a beautiful love story, that loses most of its impact due to its poor pacing along with the predictive nature of its narrative. If you watch the two first scenes of the movie, you can basically predict 80% of the plot, so the execution of this film would need to be impeccable to overcome this problem, yet the pacing is harmed by the underwhelming writing.

For an animation that consists of 90% dialogue, you really need to excel at it, which is not the case here. The dialogue is bland, uninspired, too lengthy and unrealistic, and it starts with the title - 'I ... want to eat your pancreas' is one of the cheesiest lines I've seen. Another example is a long dialogue scene in which they mention 'The Little Prince'; that conversation is at least twice as long as it needed to be. The last example is when they are arguing about the moment they met each other, this scene should be an emotional climax for the movie, but it is a big letdown instead.

Possible solutions (besides improving the dialogue) would be to add more characters to these scenes, or to move these conversations to more interesting locations; this would make the movie more dynamic and more fun. Having an argument inside a ferris wheel would be much more interesting than inside an empty room. In the same vein, a discussion about the little prince would feel much more fluid if it happened while they were assisting a customer, or while they were in the middle of a party with other people, or having dinner with her family.

Now regarding plot, themes, directing, music and art style: the show does not excel in any of them either. It is not necessarily bad, but it is quite bland in those aspects.

In conclusion, if you can get past the dull dialogue, then you should enjoy the movie; otherwise, you can't.
