NOTICE: Part 2 is up now! The list finally exceeded 50 titles, and 50 is the maximum MAL will allow in one stack. I have moved some of the titles which I feel are a little less overtly “yuri” (but still worth watching!) to my second list so that I can put more straightforward yuri titles in this one as they come out. The yuri anime genre unfortunately has a reputation for creating relationships between female characters that are incredibly ambiguous. This is a list of anime in which the romantic/sexual relationship between the two girls is very clear (and not one-sided). The girls in question should be major characters and their relationship should be one of if not the biggest driving point(s) of the show.

No hentai titles, as adding even one would get the whole list marked nsfw. Some representation on this list is better than others, and I have provided an opinion under each title.

One popular trope in romance anime is two characters who’ve either known each other since childhood or having met in childhood falling in love when they grow older. The “childhood friend” is also a common rival in love triangles and harems.

In Japan, this is known as “osanajimi”.

I divide it into three types:

childhood friends-to-lovers : two characters who have been friends for most of their lives grow closer
childhood promise: two characters were friends in childhood and made a promise. Usually, they separated after that. Now that they are reunited, it is now time to fulfill the promise
romantic rival: a now grown-up childhood friend is rival in a love polygon or a harem. Often, because she has a past with the main character, she feels she is the best pick and doesn’t want to “lose” her to others she deems less worthy

These anime have a score on MAL of under 6.0.

If you have seen any of these shows and liked them, that’s fine. There are anime a lot of people hated that I still like, too. This is just reflecting MAL’s average score.

I know there are niches for “purposefully watching bad media to laugh at it” and for trying to find gold in media most people don’t like, so I am including this for those audiences. Who knows? Maybe you’ll disagree with the common opinion.

Because these titles were published in a yuri manga anthology magazine, they will have yuri as their primary focus.

Yuri with episodes that are shorter than standard anime length (standard anime have 22-25 minute episodes).

In general, anime with short episodes are a bit controversial. Since it is hard to tell a story in such a short amount of time, many people don’t like them.

Still… there is a market. Some comedies will benefit from having short episodes (because jokes can grow stale if dragged on for too long). There is also wanting to just shut off one’s brain and watch something that won’t take a lot of time.

Here are things to keep in mind:
-being written by a woman doesn’t mean it won’t have fanservice
-being written by a woman doesn’t mean it won’t have elements which could be considered offensive
-the primary staff of most anime is men, and most anime is directed by men
-the sexual orientation of manga artists, light novel authors, and anime staff are generally kept private
-“who exactly wrote this?” isn’t always an easy question to answer. Let’s say there was a card game, then a manga, then an anime. Who would you credit, in that case?

In my opinion, people make assumptions about anime written by men and anime written by women, and those assumptions are only sometimes true. I do find that anime written by men and anime written by women feel “different”, but not in the ways that people tend to expect it when asking for shows written by women.
