Itou Junji: Collection - Tomie

Memories, both good and bad, suffuse the high school experience. Whether it's hanging out with friends or cramming for tests, everyone has something they will remember from that time in their lives. At a certain high school, one class is faced with an event that can cause people to look back on their high school days in sadness: the death of a student.

The deceased is not just any student—she's Tomie Kawakami, a popular girl with an almost otherworldly beauty. Her death was particularly gruesome: her body was dismembered and the pieces scattered. As the class tries to make sense of the situation, they are shocked when a familiar voice calls out to them from the doorway, apologizing for being late.

With raven hair and a beauty mark under her left eye, this girl is the spitting image of their murdered classmate. But she can't actually be Tomie, right?

Itou Junji: Collection – Tomie was honestly a really good horror anime. The character design was very well done, and I felt the storyline itself was strong for a horror anime, though it did feel a little rushed at times. Still, the anime definitely fits right into the horror category, and it really captures that disturbing, eerie vibe that Junji Itou is known for. I’ve always loved Itou Junji’s works, and this anime didn’t disappoint me.

Before watching it, I saw a lot of reviews saying the anime was “bad.” So I decided to check it out for myself, and after watching it, I honestly don’t ... think it’s bad at all. Most of those negative reviews were people judging it based on the manga, but that’s not fair. I haven’t read the manga myself, and I still enjoyed the anime for what it is.

Here’s my take, if you’ve read the manga, that’s great, but please rate the manga separately. Don’t come to the anime adaptation just to complain that it’s not exactly the same. Review the anime based on what it actually offers: the animation, character design, storyline, and direction. It’s okay if the adaptation isn’t a perfect copy, it’s still its own version of the story.

The horror aspect in this anime was really good. Tomie herself gave me chills. she’s such an unpredictable and creepy character. I still can’t get over that scene where someone actually gave birth to her head, that was pure horror! And the part where all the boys and even her homeroom teacher gang up to cut her body into 42 pieces and share them among her classmates was shocking. The craziest part was when she came back to school like nothing even happened — that’s classic Junji Itou horror right there.

I really enjoyed this horrific anime. It’s disturbing, weird, and full of those creepy details that make you uncomfortable in the best way possible. So please, when you review this anime, judge it for what it is as an adaptation, not by comparing it to the manga. Appreciate it for its animation, art, sound, horror tone, and character design.

For me, Itou Junji: Collection – Tomie is a solid horror experience that deserves more appreciation than it gets.

Mixed Feelings

The Tomie OVA captures the unsettling essence of Junji Ito’s work, but struggles to maintain consistency in tone and pacing. The series explores the story of an immortal, manipulative woman whose beauty drives people to madness, an idea both haunting and fascinating. Unfortunately, the adaptation rarely achieves the same psychological intensity found in the manga.

Visually, Tomie delivers moments of eerie atmosphere through muted colors and unsettling framing, yet the animation quality fluctuates sharply. Some episodes build genuine dread, while others feel rushed or oddly subdued. The sound design and voice acting help elevate tension but can’t fully compensate for weak transitions and uneven direction.

The horror ... lies more in concept than execution — fans of Ito’s grotesque themes will find moments worth appreciating, but newcomers may find the storytelling too fragmented and emotionally distant.

Well, seems like this is gonna be my first review.

As someone who has read the manga before and decided "oh, there´s an anime adaptation of it, I should go watch it" I'm feeling a lot of regret.
Not only did the anime not covered everything about the story, as it is even confusing for me, who as read the manga.
The story is confusing, jumping from place to place without any background to it, and introducing new characters without actually introducing them, no background, nothing.
I really like the work of Ito Junji and I think his mangas have a lot of potential for everyone who is ... interested in the theme and knows how to interpret it,but the adaptation is awful, please just read the manga, it's way better and you will actually enjoy it and know what Tomie is about and not see her as some type of "ghost"
