Yakusoku no Neverland

Surrounded by a forest and a gated entrance, the Grace Field House is inhabited by orphans happily living together as one big family, looked after by their "Mama," Isabella. Although they are required to take tests daily, the children are free to spend their time as they see fit, usually playing outside, as long as they do not venture too far from the orphanage—a rule they are expected to follow no matter what. However, all good times must come to an end, as every few months, a child is adopted and sent to live with their new family, never to be heard from again.

However, the three oldest siblings have their suspicions about what is actually happening at the orphanage, and they are about to discover the cruel fate that awaits the children living at Grace Field, including the twisted nature of their beloved Mama.

What an amazing way to come back to anime. I haven't watched anime, not a single one, in 4 years. I tried rewatching Tokyo Ghoul and even tried starting Rent A Girlfriend, but couldn't bring myself past the first three episodes.
Sidenote: the OP is amazing and very characteristic for this anime.

Yet this anime, and especially this season was insane. There's so much to love about it. It grabs you by the neck with goosebumps already in first episode. The following contain odd details, tense atmosphere, and plot twists out of this world. It creates an amazing physiological game with the viewer. During this ... season I truly had no clue if it would go well for the protagonists, everything was twisted to the point where I would and prepared for them to lose.
I sadly cannot say the same for the second season... (which I have also reviewed)

Mixed Feelings

Decent at the very least 1st season but overrated, severely overrated

World is believable, world building adheres to a solid structure at the very least during 1st season

Characters are decent, typical shounen manga where 10 y olds behave much more rationally than irl adults in their 40s but let it be, characters have decent depth, motivation and logic behind their actions

Plot is also quite solid durring 1st season

Art is alright, not breath taking but not ugly either, decent

Overall its a quite a decent 7.5 anime as far as the word DECENT goes, yet it has score roughly of 8.5 and considering its 2nd season was absolutely ... trashed even though it didn't fall that much further from it in my eyes, i believe s1 to be overrated

This is one of the few animes that had a lot going for themselves but its execution have led to its stumble that it was kind of sad to see; This review will constitute the overall state of its first and second season. Do I recommend people to watch it? I wish I could. But it is a very distasteful experience that I think you'll be better off reading the manga perhaps.

Animation (6/10) - This was one of the finer aspects that they had in their credits. Their color scheming and thematics was expressive, the movements were fluid and has a very contemporary appeal that ... is reflective of the current, anime industry. And its one of the things you can expect from its house, CloverWorks, that has a decent resume of shows in their belt. So props to that regard.

Usually animes with decent animation, I'll give it a 7. But since it saw a little bit of an overall decline in terms of quality I would be giving it a six to be fair because yep, they did cheaped out throughout the second season's entire run.

Storyline (1/10) - This is where it got rancid. The first season was something that was very interesting to follow, it was something that was thoroughly mapped out and is faithful to the manga series. So good for that. But we have to also credit the fall from grace that they did with the second season wherein they seemingly cut corners with its production by rushing its storyline and unreasonably deviated from its original plot.

It felt like I was watching a PowerPoint presentation of the summary rather than a constructed story that should be a pleasant experience. It was TERRIBLE. And the higher the fall, the greater the damage. So with everything considered, I'll be giving this a point, just because it was a disappointment.

Music (3.5/10) - Considering its run ended prematurely, it has a very limited library of tracks. It mostly composes of orchestral and ambient compositions to assist the story narrations rather than being utilized to jam out to. But big ups to "Isabella's Lullaby" that music track was ethereal and I think the most worth listening to out of the entire discography they have under their belt.

But overall, it was a bit lackluster.
