Maou Gakuin no Futekigousha: Shijou Saikyou no Maou no Shiso, Tensei shite Shison-tachi no Gakkou e Kayou

In the distant past, a war between humans and demons brought about widespread chaos and bloodshed. To put an end to this seemingly endless conflict, Demon King Anos Voldigoad willingly sacrificed his life, hoping to be reborn in a peaceful future.

In preparation for their king's return, the demon race created the Demon King Academy, an elite institution tasked with determining Anos' identity when he reawakens. He reincarnates two millennia later, but to his surprise, he soon learns that the level of magic in the world has drastically waned during his absence. Moreover, when he enrolls at the academy to reclaim his rightful title, he finds out that demonkind remembers him differently. His personality, his deeds, and even his legacy are all falsified—masked beneath the name of an impostor. This "lack" of common knowledge renders him the academy's outlier—a misfit never before seen in history.

Despite these drawbacks, Anos remains unfazed. As he sets out to uncover those altering his glorious past, he takes it upon himself to make his descendants recognize that their ruler has finally returned.

This show is absurd, question is it is absurd enough?

We have generic demonlord #641 reborn as the most OP of OPs and yada yada yada you know how this goes.

Actually... so does the author of this series. It's clearly a comedy with the OP character dialed up to 13. I mean can you take any of this seriously =

- Born literally one month ago.
- Started talking in that deep male voice right out of the womb.
- You know how the cool character spins a basketball on one finger? He spun a castle.
- Killed someone with his heart beat.
- Copy/pasted Hogwarts down to the ... owl system and the "mudblood" thing. On purpose, they are not spoofing or parodying it.

I don't think this should count as spoilers since they all happen in episode one... yes really. Are you willing to take it seriously with this first episode?!

It has something to say about classism as well as other messages like self worth and knowing who you are so I do appreciate that the power fantasy isn't the end goal, more the vehicle.

The characters are weak. You have a spoof of Asuka and Rei from Eva. They even used the "I am not a doll" meme as a plot point along the line. Also when it's being sincere it just comes off as generic and a little boring, the absurd part are the best.

This show is just fun. It knows what it is and aims to entertain with over the top scenarios.

Mixed Feelings

ChatGPT recommended this to me when I went looking for a power fantasy anime similar to Solo Leveling. *Theoretically*, this series should be an almost perfect fit for me -- it has a competent protagonist, the aforementioned power fantasy with an overpowered hero, a supporting cast of cute girls, and a mystery-thriller undercurrent as to who's manipulating things behind the scenes. Yet I found this to be fairly mediocre for most of the runtime. This review is an attempt to answer why that is.

There's a LOT of corniness undergirding practically every arc. The first arc involves the two girls, Misha and Sasha, being on ... bad terms with each other. The big reveal is that this is fake in the typical anime "I love you so much I'll pretend to hate you so you'll forget me" way. They thought they had a problem that could only be solved this way, yet the protagonist Anos shows up and fixes their problem with a snap of his fingers, whereupon they immediately start gushing over each other (and him). It's all very cheesey, and this is hardly the only example I could give. Towards the end of S1 there started to be more and more mentions of "defeating our enemies through the power of friendship!" that caused me to roll my eyes.

The action scenes were another dull point. There's lots of the typical anime "you can't hurt me, I have an everything proof shield" followed by "ah, but I have a super ultra skill that *annihilates* your everything proof shield!!!" Any power fantasy will need action scenes to demonstrate the protagonist's power, but the purpose of an action scene for a power fantasy is different than it is for e.g. a battle shonen. There are nuanced differences between the two that this show doesn't seem to grasp, and as someone who does not particularly care for battle shonens, I found the action to be rather boring.

The power fantasy itself is also fairly unsatisfying. Anos is completely OP, and there are a steady stream of people underestimating him and promptly getting their face pushed in. Before watching this show, I thought this was all that was really needed to have a good power fantasy. After watching this, though, my opinion has changed. You definitely need more -- I think it's probably intrinsically more satisfying to watch someone who gains power over time rather than one who starts at the max level, and having lore about milestones, ranks, titles, etc. are also important to serve as metrics for how far the character has grown. This show lacks that, as Anos just shows up in episode 1 as an unstoppable badass right from the get-go. His power doesn't really feel earned like it does in Solo Leveling or Mushoku Tensei, and we don't get the RPG-esque satisfaction of a character going back and trouncing an opponent that once gave him trouble.

This show isn't terrible. It's making an earnest attempt and has a clear goal it's striving towards, it's just not particularly well-executed, and then it falls back on corny anime tropes to make things worse. There are some parts that are better. The mystery about who's controlling things behind the scenes is boring for most of the season but has a decent conclusion at the end of S1. There's also a revenge scene when someone attacks Anos' mother that's surprisingly brutal, which I enjoyed. Yet while these occasional positive aspects were enough to keep me from condemning this show as outright "bad", they weren't enough to make me want to continue to season 2 any time soon.

Within anime certain shows like Seraph of the End are sometimes hindered by anime conventions, most commonly taking place in a school. This is most likely due to, what I refer as the myth of the target audience, because as we all know a teenagers only wants to hear stories happening to other teenagers and thus must take place in a school. And this is alike for The Misfit of Demon King Academy as well.
The basic plot is that 2000 ... years ago the demon lord, Anos Voldigoad, decided for the good of humanity to made a deal with the human hero Kanon. They would sacrifice their own lives to ensure peace could flourish, additionally 2000 years later that he and Kanon would be resurrected. After the resurrection, Anos comes to a new world where he is enrolled into the demon king academy; A highly hierarchically school with a harry potter style blood purity culture. The school holds a reverence for the demon king, however when someone tells him that the demon king was named Avos Dilhevia he realises something’s wrong. What then ensues is a mystery attempting to uncover what has happened over the past 2000 years for this mistake to happen.


What seems to be a genuinely interesting mystery is however squandered. The show is a fever dream. Moments seem connected with no real meaning. Themes are taken nowhere very quickly by a protagonist that seems to be lost in simultaneously a mystery and incredibility dull school drama and comedy. Alongside all this we have a school setting that is incredibility underused, mind numbing and practically useless to the story.


The show has practically no charm, it’s absurd and over the top but it doesn’t stick the landing. Even if it did it would still be drug down by everything else. Throughout my time watching all I could think of was the show Haven't You Heard? I'm Sakamoto, which also has a perfect character overcoming any problem, in that shows case it aims to be a comedy and thus the audience is aware of what's to come and so his being perfect doesn’t clash or harm the story. The Misfit of Demon King Academy however has large juxtapositions in the story as it will fluctuate from a boring an out-of-nowhere romance to a mystery and Anos being perfect hinders any growth or interest from the viewer as he seems to treat everything with a calm disregard. Anos Voldigoad is a shell of a character that does nothing but make absurd statements that at first make you a laugh a bit but as time goes on makes you wonder whether these comments are meant to be played straight and that question is never answered. He somewhat parallels Jin-Woo of Solo Leveling except there's no way one can contort themselves into thinking anything he does is cool.


Anos’ power if fundamental to the show and his ability to do whatever he wants is important as the story warps and bends to whatever he wants it to do. This however isn’t the same in the animation. The show isn’t a collection of stills, but it also isn’t like watching Disney's Snow White at it’s premiere. In a show about awesome power it must therefore have animation that conveys that too, however often during the show the poses and movement are stiff but convey enough that they are not lifeless at least. The series has a lot of action but much of is very forgettable except for a handful of scenes in the latter half and even those often end up losing quality near the end of the fights. A interesting camera angle will be ruined by a stiff pose or a great fight may decide that without any skill Anos should win and thus he does but this is never animated in an interesting way.


Every-setup in the show is not paid off, a common theme of the show is destiny and how many of them are slaves to it, accepting it as if there is no way to change it. In all cases like this Anos uses his power to, sometimes literately, fight the god of time and change time. Once Anos changes the persons future it is practically never mentioned and the person does not now take their new perspective/chance to live a fulfilling life to explore and grow as a character but they instead stay the same and join out main character to form a bland and forgettable cast of characters that feels forced and has no chemistry.


The Misfit of Demon King Academy is a bland and lifeless story that doesn’t go anywhere. In it’s attempts to do anything it fails. Nothing in the work is developed and thus everything is left surface level and goes nowhere. It follows many trappings of similar anime and does not do it well. All in all it is not worth anyone's time unless you explicitly want a bad time.
