Hypnosis Mic: Division Rap Battle - Rhyme Anima

In a world overtaken by war and conflict, "Hypnosis Microphones"—devices through which a user channels lyrics that can affect the listener's brain and even cause physical damage—were introduced to the masses by the Party of Words. Revolutionizing warfare, Hypnosis Mics have transformed words and music into the sole weapons used by gangsters, terrorists, and the military, with physical weapons having been banned from use.

As a result of swooping in during the chaos, the all-female Party of Words rules over the Japanese government. Women in Japan now live in Chuuouku, while men battle over surrounding territories outside the ward through rap battles.

With intentions unknown, the Party of Words begins to gather the former members of the now-disbanded legendary rap crew The Dirty Dawg to fight not for territory or war, but for their respective crew's pride and honor in the greatest rap battle of all time. The first Division Rap Battle is about to commence, and practice is not something these rappers are going to need.

Guys I don’t know what happened when I watched this anime last year at first I thought the plot was hilariously bad and the music too but by the end I think I got indeed Hypnosis Mic’ed….. Now I’m obsessed with this shit, can’t go a day without the songs, rewatched the anime and relistened to the drama tracks, replayed the game story and unhinged event each MULTIPLE TIMES. I’ve consumed literally everything possible to consume related to the franchise, even the silly promo merch lives and the radio episodes???? Wtf????? Give me back my time and my brain

So yeah please stay away from ... this franchise if you want to stay sane it’s definitely designed to hijacked autistic brains and honestly it’s very vile

Mixed Feelings

There are way too many characters for how little characterization they get.

If you check the MAL page, they have every member of the 4 rap groups as "main" characters and calling them all "main" characters is generous. There are clearly leaders of the rap groups and while they don't fare much better, the side characters are each assigned a personality trait and told to stick to it.

Dice is the gambler

Jyuto is the cop who I guess is technically dirty but, like, he seems to be doing his job just fine to me

Saburo is the hacker brother

Speaking of which, I'm not entirely sure what Jiro's deal ... is. He just kinda exists. If it wasn't for Saburo's hacking, the whole Buster Bros could've died in a fire and I wouldn't have missed anything tbh.

With the exception of Busujima, I don't think any of them outside of the main 4 have any real reason to want to win outside of bragging rights.

Even then, they're just kinda flaky reasons and they don't spend enough time to give any of them any sort of weight.

When [team] won the rap tourney, I was like "damn, that was kind of underwhelming".

I guess I rep the Mad Trigger Crew but they're not exactly going down in my best characters of all time tier list.

They spend the first, like, half or so on episodic adventures trying to acclimate us to the characters but I don't think it worked out all that well. Maybe if it was JUST Ichiro, Samatoki, Ramuda (speaking of which, I kinda get why they did it but dear God, his voice is so annoying), and Jakurai, they'd be able to give them enough time to breathe but with TWELVE people, it gets crowded.

That's to say nothing of the Party of Words (ignoring the whole "boys rule, girls drool" concept of all the rappers being boys and the tyrannical dictator party being girls because that is a whole weird issue in of itself) who are kind of forgettable and the OTHER group of three characters who for the majority of the story are just dicking around as photographers.

The music is... fine. It's decent enough to make the show watchable but I didn't find many, if any, tracks to be all that memorable. When they rap, they also turn into 3D models for some reason?

I don't think there's any real reason to watch this unless you really just wanna see cute boys for 13 episodes and even then, I'm sure there's better.

The characters are thin and the music is forgettable in a show focused on rapping where they rap in every episode.

It wasn't bad, I guess, it was watchable, but I also don't really see any need to seek it out.

The story is lackluster at best and lets be honest, it takes a backseat to the hip-hop/rap performances. Nothing about the story was interesting; I know I'm not familiar with Japanese hip-hop culture, even though I do listen to a lot of rappers (artists & battle rappers) from that area. Maybe that's why it didn't jive with me like it should have.

The odd hip-hop segment will have 1 character with awesome rap flow but that's it. The beats are terrible; well written on their own, just not good enough to freestyle or rap to. I suggest someone remix it - I ... don't care enough about the show to do it myself.

The lyrics are the point of how powerful their attack is and I challenge anyone to find good bars in any lyric of this show. Japanese battle rap leagues have great f*ckin' bars so a little more research from the creators or collab would have benefitted that aspect greatly.

A few characters are cool, most are meh... I don't suggest watching this if it's only for hip-hop/rap purposes.

I gave it a 4, it's bad.
