Perhaps its Voice Acting quality, Animation, additional OST or Direction, these series are on-par or go above and beyond at elevating the manga's content.

This list consists of psychological titles, which helped me to accept inevitability and cope with alienation, as well as some other existentional fears, thereby affected my personality above all others. Anime that makes you realise a lot about the meaning of human life and death, relationships, principles and most important: "self-concept".

Nearly all of them induce depressive thoughts, portray social problems that we face IRL, have biblical references and slow pacing. So be sure that you are in the right mood and prepared to face dark side of reality.

P.S. Despite the hopelessness and predestination you may feel while watching, these works of art still bestow warmth and hope through understanding the uniqueness of existence. The world is truly a cruel place and life is lacking meaning and purpose, yet we got the flustering chance to experience ourselves and the universe we share.

Avoided a bit of the really obvious ones (The Big 3 and Death Note) and some that were really similar to something already present on this list. These are anime I recommend you not miss out on in your lifetime.

Hard science fiction is a category of science fiction characterized by concern for scientific accuracy and logic. The heart of the "hard science fiction" designation is the relationship of the science content and attitude to the rest of the narrative, and the "hardness" or rigor of the science itself. One requirement for hard SF is procedural or intentional: a story should try to be accurate, logical, credible and rigorous in its use of current scientific and technical knowledge about which technology, phenomena, scenarios and situations that are practically or theoretically possible. For example, the development of concrete proposals for spaceships, space stations, space missions, and a US space program in the 1950s and 1960s influenced a widespread proliferation of "hard" space stories.

(Note: not all of these works are considered hard sci-fi, but I decided to put them here due to them being potentially interesting to people that love logical space-themed stories as much as I do)

Some animes that I consider serious and with a final message.

I don't recommend them because they are necessarily good or bad, but because they show us another way of thinking about what we had watched and can impact our lives in some way. And I also believe that some of the realistic animes from this list can help us to see how we are leading our lives.

Is it true that there's no better salvation than not being born in this world? Is the world so ugly that it's not worth living in? Should I even give it a chance?

Here we are on this earth, with only a few decades to live and we lose many irreplaceable hours brooding over grievances that, in year's time, will be forgotten by us and by everybody. No, let us devote our life to worthwhile actions and feelings, great thoughts, real affections, and enduring undertakings. For life is too short to be little

These anime have elements of death.

Shows that have elements of soft science within them, such as archaeology, economics, linguistics, psychology, and political science.

The Humanities are also included in order to flesh-out this list a bit more. Plus, there is a lot of topical/thematic overlap between these two terms.

The humanities encompass academic disciplines that study human culture, expression, and experiences. Rather than focusing on natural or social phenomena in a quantifiable way, the humanities explore aspects of human life that relate to art, language, history, and philosophy.
