Katsute Mahou Shoujo to Aku wa Tekitai shiteita.

An evil army is leading a ground invasion against Earth, and their Lieutenant Shun Miller is determined to wreak havoc upon the populace. Considering the genre it ticks all the boxes 10/10 masterpiece if you're looking for some fluffy sweet romance including some magical girl moment vs evil bad guys. Enemy to love interest, poor but hard working super cutie girl and a cool, good looking, powerful kind guy. Very aesthetically pleasing art, the comedy and dark element also on point. If this is the genre you're looking for then this gem. There was only 3 books and it's unfinished which explains why the anime is the way it is. However each episode is very sweet lovey-dovey and funny, I find it very entertaining. It's so unfortunate ... that the author passed away and it wasn't finished but I wouldn't mind this going on for another 10000 episodes, just them being adorable spending each day together. Usually I will never watch unfinished work. I also never watch things that are airing but the artwork looked great which attracted me to finally watch this anime even though it's unfinished. Also each episode is only 10 minute so the whole series is like a movie. If you consider it like that yeah it's perfect if you're looking for something aesthetically pleasing, sweet and fluffy with some humor.

Mixed Feelings

“The Magical Girl and the Evil Lieutenant Used to Be Archenemies” (another day, another anime, another short title) is what happens when a good idea can’t decide on its own tone.

Well damn. A rom-com I found entertaining despite its awful world building and slap stick humor? I did not have that on my bingo card this year. It’s actually surprising. This show has no right being as enjoyable as I found it to be. The world building is shit, the characters are annoying AF and the mixing of tones is just asinine. Yet I can’t deny that the interaction between the main morons is actually ... competent. The plot is a mixed bag and the story is incomplete (and will never be complete because of the author’s death) and yet it actually hooked me. I have no idea how. Ok, I do have an idea how and I’ll get to it.

Before we start I would like to explain something. I will be talking about “plot” and “story”. Many people use those terms interchangeably. I’m not one of those people, so to make sure everyone is on the same page…
I use the definitions for “plot” and “story” as Lisa Cron describes them:
“What happens in the story is the PLOT, the surface events.”
“STORY is about how the things that happen affect someone in pursuit of a difficult goal, and how that person changes internally as a result”.

So yeah, despite being a real shit show with its tone and an unholy amalgamation of tropes from other magical girl shows that I find funny but most people find disturbing (looking at you Puella Magi Madoka Magica”), this show actually has a story. A cliché one but that’s not the point. Let that sink in. A story. It means that in a rom-com characters actually grow and not spend 12 episodes doing random shit that end with them reverting to their beginning state from episode 1… sometimes 2. Is it a good story? Well depends what you’re into. It’s not exactly friends to lovers and it’s not exactly Romeo and Juliet. It’s a mix of tropes from both of those. So as an idea it’s nothing special but it is serviceable. Which is more I can say for 90% of rom-coms from the last decade and a half. A story about two complete morons with communication skills of a dead amoeba, serving opposite sides of a really poorly explained conflict. One being an apathetic, socially inept and boring magical girl. The other is clearly suffering from ADHD, having problems with regulating his emotional state Lieutenant in an evil organization. On paper it sounds like a good idea. I agree. This is actually an interesting idea for a story. I do not have a problem with that. What I do have a problem with is that the plot is only halfway decent.
Let me explain.

So the first thing I have a problem is… how old are MCs? Seriously. The Lieutenant — Mira — looks like he’s in his 20s and the Magical Girl — Byakuya — looks like a 12 year old. Unless someone tells me the girl is 18 and just looks young or writes some really weird and inappropriate fetishes (that would land him in jail) to Mira’s character sheet I don’t see any reason for a grown man to fall for a child. Would it be so bad if she looked closer to his age? Or maybe older? That could be an interesting angle. Magical Girl in her 30s or 40s has to deal with the evil organization. Could be interesting. Anyway…

I’m not entirely sure the writer knew what kind of plot she wants to create. I would divide it into two different types. One, the better one in my opinion, is the more serious, romantic plot. The second one, the one that is annoying and pointless in my opinion, is the over the top slapstick parody of the magical girl genre. I am aware that a competent writer with experience and knowledge about writing those kind of plots would be able to mix those two in a way that feels organic and both types work to elevate one another. This is not it. Despite being serviceable in its more serious plot, the comedy part is atrocious. The running joke is that Mira can’t control his reactions/emotions, gets flustered by Byakuya and either breaks his glasses, has to punch something or takes a few steps back trembling dramatically. It’s serviceable the first 2 times but it gets old really, really fast. Despite his reaction being dramatic and over the top, they waste time. This show’s episodes last only for about 10 minutes (after excluding the opening and ending) it does not have time to waste. And yet it does. You might think that those few seconds aren’t a big deal but they add up pretty quickly.

Another running joke is how Byakuya’s familiar, who gave her powers, looks like. At first it’s implied that it’s a cat, probably to invoke some “Madoka Magica” associations and the fact that magical girls were just tools for the beings that gave them powers. Later it’s revealed that this familiar is kind of a dick and a perverted slave driver. It gets pretty dark, pretty fast. It’s a nice build up to something interesting and rather original (or at least not something seen often). All that work to make the familiar look like a guy in a cheat cat suit. It kills everything that was built prior to his reveal. He is still a jackass and a pervert but the menacing aura is totally gone. He just becomes a perv uncle that uses Byakuya to earn money.

I know I shouldn’t get annoyed by world building. This is a magical girl show so it’s obvious the world will be flat and mostly empty. I get that. It still ticks me off. An evil organization is attacking humanity, they do it even in broad daylight, bystanders witness it, they even record some fights (well… we only see one recording when a slime molests Byakuya) and… that’s it. People exist only when they are needed. It’s an empty, hollow world with nothing to it. I give shit to “Go! Go! Loser rangers” for having a world full of imbeciles but at least those imbeciles acknowledge what is happening and react to it. This show? Doesn’t even bother. I’m surprised we even see other people. There are no governmental forces fighting the organization, no safety protocols for civilians to follow during the attack. Nothing. It’s like the organization isn’t even a threat to anyone so they just let them run amok and the magical girls are there to clean up that little inconvenience. Even “Sailor Moon” had better world building than that and that’s saying something. I get it. Putting magical girls in a semi functioning world would be difficult and would require a lot of skill and attention to detail but making this a sandbox with no reactions is just lazy.

The show uses a lot of cheap tricks to make you care about the MCs. Byakuya is a petite, frail, depressed, almost devoid of hope young woman (I seriously hope she’s not a kid) with big eyes. She lives in a shit hole (because the rent is low), has an abusive parental figure and is forced to work multiple jobs to make ends meet. The only thing that is missing for the full on “heartstring bingo” is that some would abuse her physically, mentally or sexually on a daily basis. You want to know a “fun” fact? Her familiar is trying to cop a feel on a regular basis. Granted we only see that once but it’s implied that it’s a regular thing. On top of that he wanted to pimp her out to his colleague. The worst part? It’s played as a joke. So basically we have an almost perfect victim as one of the MCs. Of course we want to see her smile. We want her to fall in love. We want to see her have her happy end. And most of us know that this is a cheap, easy trick to get us invested, and we still do it. Watching her have even the slightest dose of happiness makes us feel good. Having her open up and confront her own feelings because of her relationship with Mira makes us feel good. It sucks on a logical level but it works. I hate that this sort of thing worked on me.

Mira is… ok seriously I hate him. I understand his function in this plot and story and even think he gets some really nice scenes but his development and overall behavior is just pathetic. For starters, something that I alluded to earlier, the mofo falls in love at first sight with a woman (please, please let her be an adult) that looks like a child. Oversexualized by her garments child. It’s not even a little crush, it’s a full on possessive mode. That’s not romantic, that’s not funny (well it can be but not in this case), that’s just creepy and sad. He wants to help Byakuya but does so in a way that would only create codependency and not real growth. He buys her sweets, sends food and is constantly thinking of things to get her. It’s almost like he wants to buy her affection. If this was a starting point, if Mira learned that this isn’t the best way to help her throughout those 12 mini episodes this wouldn’t be a problem. But it is because nothing changes in this regard.

The scene that pissed me off the most is in episode 5. Mira’s organization captured the magical girl. How? We don’t know, don’t think about it. She is helpless, chained, shows no signs of willing to even live and he admits he gets off on that. The fuck? And he’s the one the writer wants me to root for? Fuck of. Now, if this was in a different situation, if Byakuya wasn’t such a depressing character at that point in the story, if they had a closer relationship or if Byakuya had a way to escape from the start that could be played for laughs. But she doesn’t and they don’t have any. At this point their relationship barely began. They are close but not that close. She even states that she doesn’t want to make trouble for Mira. She basically doesn’t give a damn if she lives or dies. It’s a really depressing and character building scene. And it’s absolutely destroyed by making her want to go to the bathroom and him acting like a drama queen. Fuck this episode. We had an amazing setup for something deep and emotional but instead we got a cheap joke. Eff off. Just… eff off.

So why did I enjoy watching this train wreck if it has so many flaws?
Easy. Because of the aforementioned cheap tricks. Watching Byakuya and Mira’s interactions was fun (when they were on the serious side that is). I liked seeing small changes in Byakuyas demeanour from depressed to more hopeful. I liked some scenes when Mira is acting like a proper romantic protagonist. I even liked the way the MCs start to bounce off each other to create pretty solid interactions. Despite all it’s flaws this show understands one thing. That when You start at the bottom You have to, at the end, get the character out of it. Even a little bit. This show does that. In a lazy, not everytime earned way but I take what I can get at this point. I didn’t watch it for Mira or Byakuya themselves. I watched it to see how and why they will change. The last episode is actually sweet and hear working with the scene where they say goodnight to each other.

Plus I liked the opening song.

Preliminary (4/12 eps)

As a romcom fan, I don’t like this anime — though I don’t exactly hate it either. To be fair, it doesn’t have many flaws, but the real issue is how they build up over the episodes.

The first flaw is that it’s slow. Really slow. It drags on in a way that just feels pointless. I always wonder why it’s so slow. I get why some anime are slow-paced (for example, Azumanga Daioh), but in this one the slowness just becomes annoying.

The second flaw is the jokes. There are tons of jokes, but almost none of them made me laugh. They just felt awkward, and ... most of them relied on really over-the-top expressions.

In short, the anime just lacks spice.
