Shikanoko Nokonoko Koshitantan

Torako Koshi is the epitome of perfection. With her peerless beauty, top-notch grades, and position as student council president, her popularity in school is unrivaled. However, she harbors a dark secret—she was a delinquent back in middle school—and this is something she conceals to the best of her abilities.

Unfortunately, when she meets the mysterious deer girl Noko Shikanoko, Torako's hidden shame is constantly on the precipice of being exposed due to Shikanoko's rather weird antics. To maintain the reputation she worked so hard for, Torako must go along with Shikanoko's whims, even going so far as to become president of the newly established Deer Club. All her efforts will be rewarded if she can prevent the menacing doe from accidentally blurting out damaging details about her personal history that will undoubtedly unleash Torako's greatest nightmare.

It's just dumb. Really really really really dumb.

But it's super super dumb fun!

This show is ridiculous from start to finish, there's no end to its madness. There's so much dumb stuff I can't even begin to list it. But almost every episode made me laugh.

Nokotan is just stupid, one of the most stupid characters ever. But she's hilarious. Koshitan is great, generic tsundere but she's so ridiculously over the top that it's hilarious. And basically everyone being against her in the show despite loving her is just glod entertainment.

There are some stupidly funny animations, some hilarious bits of voice acting (and singing) and ... tons of fun moments.

If you go in to this with any seriousness, you probably will dislike it. But if you go in just for shits and giggles, I bet you'll love it.

Mixed Feelings

Heading into deer hunting season, "My Deer Friend Nokotan" is the perfect watch. Putting that aside, this show hooks you in with all of the meme-potential content, but then doesn't really have anything else to provide. Just like the deer crackers the show is so fond of, all of the events that happen in the show just seem like empty calories.

For the best and for the worst, this show is very free-form in it's writing. Events happen with no reasoning and 4th wall breaks can happen whenever the writers feel like it. Unfortunately, the only character development that occurs ... to any character is the side character Bashame and her rice story arc. After character introductions, no other character gains or loses anything throughout the series.

This show is very much a manzai with Koshi being the tsukkomi and Shikanoko being the boke. Every episode's formula basically boils down to Shikanoko doing something air-headed and/or chaotic and Koshi harshly criticizing her for acting that way. Other side characters show up to play the boke every now and then, but are not really memorable at all.

The mixed-medium animation is probably this shows greatest strength. Most of the animation is 2d, but it incorporates CGI deer and even some real-life footage/photos of popular deer spots in Japan.

If you like manzai with a decent dose of meme-worthy scenes, this show was made for you. If you want something more than a face-level comedy with engaging characters, this ain't it.

PS the voice actor for Koshi is the one and only Saki Fujita (AKA voice provider for Hatsune Miku), which makes the a cappella scene a bit funnier

It’s crazy how this anime was popular in the first place, it is so painfully unfunny because it relies too much on randomness and the jokes felt repetitive. I know it’s a brain rot anime, but that doesn’t excuse how atrocious the writing and its jokes are. The voice acting are annoying asf, it gives me so much rage to hear the characters’ voices, might be just as bad as listening to vocamid 💔. Also the pacing is way to fast, I can barely tell wtf is happening at some points. This show tries so hard to prioritize enjoyability over writing yet fail MISERABLY at ... both 💔.
