Kakkou no Iinazuke Season 2

A lot has happened for Nagi Umino and Erika Amano: they were swapped at birth, learned of their engagement, and have started living under the same roof. The two now share their home with Nagi's sister, Sachi, and his crush, Hiro Segawa. Despite this unusual domestic situation and frequent quarreling, the group is beginning to settle into a life together.

However, the return of Nagi's childhood friend Ai Mochizuki to Japan complicates things. Ai suddenly declares her intention to marry Nagi, and although he turns her down, she is committed to having him all to herself. Now with four girls around, each with their own thoughts about him, Nagi must figure out his own feelings and the best way forward.

I found Season 1 of A Couple of Cuckoos surprisingly fresh and well-executed despite the premise being so cliché in soap operas. It is helped by having good visuals.

How does Season 2 compare?

§ Let's talk about the studio and staff

Season 1 was made by two studios: 1) SynergySP, and 2) Shin-Ei Animation — two studios that are decades old. I don't know if Season 1 did badly because its second season was taken over by Okuruto Noboru, a studio that's not even a decade old. I haven't seen their works, and the only anime I recognise is Tomodachi Game.

Accompanying the change of studio is the ... unfortunate reduction of staff, assuming that the names of staff listed at MAL are accurate. For some reason, Season 2 doesn't even list a storyboarder. I can only speculate that the role of storyboarder had been subsumed by other staff. (But why aren't they credited for it?) Regardless of what actually happened, it cannot be denied that Season 2's storyboarding is inferior to Season 1. A quick look at the OP and ED for both seasons can tell you the difference

For some weird reason, it doesn't even list an animation director, only key animators. Anyway, the animation in Season 2 seems fairly acceptable. I don't notice it that much since I am so engaged in Nagi and how he deals with his harem. But for others with keener eyes, they might be bothered by the downgrade in animation and storyboarding.

Season 1 had two directors: 1) Akagi Hiroaki, and 2) Shirahata Yoshiyuki. Their later project, The Dangers in My Heart, is popular and reportedly well-made.

Season 2's director is Hishida Masakazu, who started working in the industry in 1999. He has a number of anime under his directorship, but I can only speak of the 2024 anime, 'My Instant Death Ability is So Overpowered, No One in This Other World Stands a Chance Against Me!' He did an okay job there, but messed up the latter part of that anime. This anime is an improvement in comparison to that.


§ Let's talk about everything else

It maintains the fun banter between Nagi and the girls. Speaking of the girls, a new girl is introduced. She seems promising at the start. Unfortunately, she wasn't given enough screentime to really be in contention, thereby wasting her character.

Some believe that most of the episodes involve Nagi and the girls yapping about the arranged marriage, studies, and all that. As a result, some feel that nothing is happening.

I answer that: 1) If the interaction is fun and entertaining, who cares if it doesn't really advance the plot? 2) Plus, any development, which this anime surprisingly has several, would feel organic.

Compared to Season 1, Season 2 only has 12 episodes. Perhaps if this season had the same 24 episodes as in Season 1, this anime would have been too dragging that any semblance of character development would probably not be appreciated. That's why I am not buying the opinions made by many that nothing is really happening.

If nothing else, the girls are attractive but not to the point of having cheap fanservice. This is its edge to 'Dealing with Mikadono Sisters Is a Breeze.'


§ Conclusion

If you like Season 1 of A Couple of Cuckoos, you will also like Season 2, as there are important developments. It's an enjoyable watch.

The only reason why I am giving this a 5 out of 10 instead of the 6 out of 10 I gave Season 1 is that its visuals, as well as execution, are a level down.


NOTA BENE: A rating of 5 out of 10 means that 1) I find this anime to be average, 2) I enjoyed it to some extent, but it has some flaws. 3) Or simply, I rank it below my 6's but above my 4's.

A 5 means a passing score. If you're the kind of viewer who treats anything below a 7 as irredeemable, I'd encourage a broader, more nuanced approach to rating.

My enjoyment spectrum lies from 4 to 10. If I have scored an anime below 4, I actively dislike it.

Mixed Feelings

Although I hesitated between "Recommended" and "Mixed Feelings" for Kakkou no Inazuke S2, I ultimately decided to go with "Mixed Feelings". Considering it’s a sequel to S1, you might enjoy it if you liked the first season, but if this S2 were a standalone or a first season, it probably wouldn’t be worth your time.

The second season adds a new character to the cast, which works to some extent. The same type of comedy as in S1 should make you laugh at times, but there’s a big issue with the pacing and the plot. While the first season shone with a believable story and realistic ... character reactions (though it also suffered from poor pacing), that’s not the case anymore in this sequel: most of the mini-arcs are far-fetched, and it sometimes feels like the characters have become dumber versions of themselves. It remains entertaining enough, I guess, but it could have been much better. Furthermore, there isn’t much progress in the story, and considering the first season had 24 episodes, that’s definitely a con.

Regarding the animation, once again, I think it was better in the first season (though I’m not 100% sure). There aren’t many animated scenes, the designs still look nice, and the anime tries to include a few good-looking moments here and there, but it’s clearly not one of S2’s main strengths.

All in all, the result is a bit underwhelming. If you enjoyed the first season, you can still watch S2 and enjoy seeing this small cast of characters again, otherwise, this anime doesn’t have much to offer besides the continuity of the story.

Bad, just horrendous.
First season was a bit intriguing especially because i love fake couple trope but second season just boring and painful to watch. Harem grew larger and making the mc even more wishy washy. pls which girl u like cus u said u like her and her and her... cmon bro.
All characters are also flat and just badly written, no depth at all. Comedy aren't that funny. A bit annoying fanservice too. It's just boring, mid, and painful to finish.
The whole story just goes nothing, no clear plotline or whatsoever, we just watching them talking and competing to be the winner ... of mc's heart
which not even worth it he's so chopped 😭😭
Sad cus i thought it has potential and interesting premise....
