Synopsis

After an accident sent her family to their deaths in the ocean, Hinako Yaotose keeps returning to the thought of sinking forever into the sea herself. With Miko Yashiro as her only friend, Hinako manages to keep up a semi-happy facade, but whenever Miko leaves her side, she slips into despair. Everything changes one summer when she meets a mysterious girl with eyes as deep and clear as the sea, drawing Hinako in like nothing else has in a long time.

During her absent-minded search for the girl, Hinako is suddenly pulled underwater by a beastly deep-sea creature, only to awaken to the presence of the girl—Shiori Oumi—who takes on a monstrous form and kills Hinako's attacker. Despite this heroic act, Shiori's intentions are no different from any other monster's: she wants to eat Hinako.

The following morning, Shiori walks into Hinako's class as a transfer student, and Hinako cannot help but smile—at last, someone who could fulfill her quiet wish for death has appeared before her.

Now with the release of The Summer Hikaru Died as the definitive yaoi of the year it was only natural that the Yuri gods would bestow it's counterpart with This Monster wants to eat me. The only surprise is that it came this early.
So far the anime is exceptionally well produced and directed being able to match the manga in tone and seamlessly adapt the panels into motion. The music in particular is a standout with it being to elevate moments of suspense and Hinako's monologues, with the latter being my favourite sequences so far. As a manga reader I can attest that the ...

Look at the character list. Three. Just three. You know what that means, right?
Yup, love triangle!! Yayy.
AHem.

Ok, so you know these anime/dramas where two people fight for one person's affection, and the person in question can't chose whom to marry in the end? It's the same here but replace "marry" with "get eaten" and you have Watashi wo Tabetai, Hitodenashi. Sounds like a black comedy, but despite the ridiculous premise this anime takes itself VERY, VERY seriously. And tbh, after you suspend disbelief you can kinda get into it.

If only it wasn't so repetitive, sometimes the characters are just saying the same thing ...

Preliminary (3/13 eps)
With The Summer Hikaru Died as its inevitable comparison, this yuri version feels like it was written by a sixteen-year-old. It’s full of edgy moments and clumsy dialogues that try to sound profound, but everything is too incoherent to pass as serious drama: "In order to die, I need to work harder to live?" The yokai theme is completely unoriginal—while Hikaru shines precisely because it gives a clever twist to this topic, This Monster Wants to Eat Me makes no effort to infuse any originality or meaning into the idea of Japanese monsters. They’re just a pretext to move a story that never stands out ...
