Kimi to Koete Koi ni Naru

As you may have seen, this show is quite contentious, with a lot of people loving it, but also a lot of people hating it. I fall into the category of felling fairly positive about it, though not specifically loving it. I believe it has a lot of scenes that are gripping, emotional and well done, but I also understand why other people may find it generic.
By far, the best part about this series and what makes it unique, is the strong cast of characters comprised of both humans, and anthro (furries). We see within just the first few episodes alone, a strong cast of ... humans such as the main girl Mari, her class friends, the new student (who happens to be a furry) and on top of that, we even get a sense for the furry’s own anthro best friends back where he came from. The rest of the series offers similarly strong focus on its wide cast, such as individual episodes focused on Mari’s friends, focus on a bully character who is discriminatory towards the furry people, and also a strong exploration of all of Mari’s classmates, as seen during a relay race. I recommend this series to anyone who enjoys a great shojo anime with many side characters. Warning for some suggestive content as this is a romance.
What really convinced me this show was so good was during the sports focused episodes, which is actually a big part of Tsunagu (furry MC) and also a big part of the life of Yukihiro, the other most relevant character besides Mari or Tsunagu.
I really admired the voice acting in both the original Japanese and the English dub, during the sports scenes, both actresses really genuinely sounded like they were getting at a loss of breath as they played basketball.
This is not dubbed yet, but the newest ep, had amazing voice acting from Mari’s Japanese VA: Mari is out of breath, giving a speech during the relay race scene of Ep6, about how, finally during this race, all of her human classmates finally chose to cheer on the wolf (also all that stuff Mari said about how she wishes that her classmates would cheer on the wolf Tsunagu at other times too, besides just sports festivals, was really interesting commentary on discrimination and how some people are discriminated against “being good at only one thing”, so on top of that scene having great acting from Mari’s actress, it was also in and of itself a really fascinating commentary).

First of all, it's important to emphasize that I will criticize the anime for what it tries to be, "A Beast x girl shoujo romance," instead of criticizing it for what it isn't.
I needed to point this out because, so far, Kimi to Koete has been quite weak compared to other anime of the genre. The first two episodes are very weak, but the third one gave me hope that this anime might not be so bad after all.
Let's analyze each aspect of the anime to see why I had a negative reaction to it:

Story: The story has interesting points, but so far it's been ... a mixed bag. The first episode is extremely rushed, speedrunning generic romance plots without giving the viewer time to get to know the characters and see their chemistry work. In the second episode, we have the introduction of a bullying plot and a heat plot. The bullying plot, even though a bit shallow, is quite interesting, but I can't say the same about the heat plot; it's extremely forced. We didn't even have enough time to see them interact, and they already want to pull off a spicy scene. Even though I like this type of romance genre, I felt completely uncomfortable with the execution of this plot. The anime expecting us to feel something about what's happening when we haven't even had time to connect with the characters is quite frustrating. But with episode 3, we had more time for the characters to interact, and the episode's plot was quite fun and wholesome. This episode was really much better, and I finally felt involved with the anime. If the rest of the series is like the direction of this episode, maybe this anime has a chance to redeem itself.

Characters: The main protagonist, Maki, is unfortunately the weakest character in the anime. For such an important protagonist, the anime doesn't even bother to properly introduce her so that we can understand who she is beyond her shyness and kindness. The biggest problem is that 90% of her screen time is spent obsessing over the wolf, which is quite ironic because the wolf character, who is supposed to be the most horny because of his "heat," doesn't even come close to the heroine in that regard lol. Then we have the wolf, Tsunagu, and he's decent, unlike the heroine. The anime actually takes the time to let us get to know him better, his thoughts, personality, and dreams. In terms of secondary characters, the two female friends are quite fun, and the third episode really helped make them more interesting, but so far Yukihiro hasn't won me over. His obsessive curiosity and lack of common sense in certain scenes really left a bitter taste in my mouth regarding the character, but maybe he can redeem himself in the future.

Art and Animation: When I saw the first trailer, I was surprised by how beautiful the art in this anime is, and it continues to be so in all three episodes. However, the animation left much to be desired in the first two episodes, with many scenes that needed attention being completely cut. You can really tell that this anime is trying to give the impression that it's much more well-produced than it actually is. The animation has been such a problem that they overuse the chibi form of the characters as a lazy way to draw the wolf showing his expressions. I don't mind the animation being weak and chibis being used, but in the case of this anime, these problems seriously impacted my connection with the story due to the abrupt cuts and excessive reliance on chibis. Incredibly, episode 3 (again) showed a good improvement in quality, having much more acceptable animation and even some decently animated scenes.

In conclusion: Kimi to Koete had many problems and many questionable decisions in its first two episodes; the pacing was horrible, the characters didn't have time to develop properly, and plots were introduced and finished in the blink of an eye. However, episode 3 seems like a light at the end of the tunnel for what seemed like just a shallow romance. I really hope the anime continues the quality of its third episode.

The main character in this story is Mari Asaka and she is in love with a dog. Like, there’s this dog who acts like a human and goes to school with the humans, and because the girl felt bad for the doggy when he got bullied, and tried to become his friend, the doggy got overwhelmed by his instincts when they were alone together, and that’s how this horrible romance started. The show presents this male main character as if he is an animal: he is a dog, it feels as if the show is glorifying people who love animals. Girl oriented shows being so ... awful such as this one, must be the reason that female anime fans are interested in shonen nowadays, such as Dandadan or Takopi’s Original Sin. Those 2 shows are boy oriented media that girls watch because it’s way better than shojo: I don’t think shojo is any good nowadays with how shojo presents weak women who are powerless against stronger men, and how shojo glorifies loving animals and it’s always filled with non consensual stuff, just like in With You Our Love will make it and in other terrible shojo such as Wolf Girl and the dark prince: these series are why women would prefer to read shonen nowadays.
Throughout the first 3 episodes of this show, I saw how the main character was a very bland human girl who was only defined by her love for her doggy. She has other scenes that try to give her personality, such as having a human male friend who she constantly leads on to her and then NTRs because she’s in love with her doggy instead of loving a human. This ultimately just makes her boring because everything about her is just related to her doggy love. I guess maybe another character trait Mari has is that she wants the animals that act like humans to be able to go to human school? Since she wants people to not bully any of the animals when they go to human school. But that’s about all I can say for
Speaking of non consensual romance, that is the other issue with this series. I don’t mean that it is non consensual because it is a human who is in love with a doggy. What I mean is that the dog is extremely forceful with the girl because of his instinct. As other reviewers have highlighted when they review this show, there is no love with this couple, there is no scenes that make you look at them and think that they actually have any emotional connection, instead it’s just always about the dog being dominant, and the human girl is submissive. It is truly remarkable that a show where a girl is trying to hook up with a doggy, managed to make me hate the doggy too, when you would think he is the victim cause he’s an animal. But, the doggy is dominating without consent all the time, so the doggy is awful too, just like the girl is.
The next thing that I’m sure is gonna get brought up, is how there is a shonen that is also about animal people, called Beastars, so why am I not upset with that? Well first of all, Beastars is not a series that I’m really a big fan of, but I do think it is better than this show. Beastars was about a world of only animal people, there’s no humans. And that’s the only way you can tell a story with animal people without it feeling like it’s about animal-lovers/zoo. Because, Beastars is about a world full of animal people, that managed to feel not as creepy. This show With You Our Love will make, is about humans in the same world as animal people, and romance between them, which is an impossible thing for it to ever be ok, that’s always wrong, that is never ok in any series. I think that this series should’ve just been about only animal people in a world with no humans because it’s impossible for humans to be with this setting without it feeling like this show glorifies people who love animals.
