Kuroneko to Majo no Kyoushitsu

The Royal Diana Academy is a prestigious school that accepts individuals with adept magical abilities. Upon graduation, these students find themselves at the top of their field or employed by the royal family. Spica Virgo dreams of studying at the academy, aiming to be a top-rate sorceress like her idol Claude Sirius. Claude is a world-renowned sorcerer who became the institution's youngest instructor, but mysteriously disappeared soon after.

Lacking the experience and connections required for admission, Spica finds herself unable to make meaningful progress with her training. One day, however, she meets a talking black cat with magical abilities. Hoping to change the situation for the better, she begs the animal to take her as his apprentice and teach her the magic she needs to attend the academy. The cat accepts the deal on one condition—she must find a way to reverse his feline curse. Despite the arduous challenges ahead of her, Spica is determined to prove herself as a student worthy of the cat's mentorship.

Preliminary (4/24 eps)

This review is biased because i have read the manga.
the anime has it's faults like the animation seems to be on strict budget, and they avoid animating lot of action scenes by taking shortcuts, compared to many other Animes, it seems kinda cheap or it have this vibe that it was made by a studio that specialize in H-Anime or something.
But other than that, story-wise it follows the manga to the letter, and i think the story is entertaining, fun and hilarious sometimes.
I you like mature and un-serious comedy, then this manga is for you, it reminds me of "Aho Girl", in that the object ... of comedy isn't a boy but a girl, but this one plays the straight (wo)man sometimes too.
There was a parts that were changed like when the astronomy teacher asks Virgo about mass–luminosity relation in Stars, and this question even for me who is into amateur astronomy was hard for me to answer, they changed it to newtonian gravity equation in the anime, but it kinda makes you not admire Ewe as much as you're supposed to.
I just recommend this for anyone who is tired of Shounen, action and fantasy Animes that clutter the medium, and just want to enjoy a simple anime that is funny, entertaining, and have heart, yes, this anime have a point, and maybe a moral lesson, it teachs you that sometimes it's not bad to rely on others to go forward in life, and that kissing people's ass to do that isn't as shameful as you thought it will be *snicker*

Mixed Feelings

I'm gonna be honest with you. I only one reason to drop it. If you know these Story is written by Yōsuke Kaneda, the author of Boarding School Juliet. The story it's self is not bad. It's good. But the problem comes down to animation, narrative. The animation is mid tier. As for the story to carry the anime, man i said the story is good not greatest. I like it but i have watched untill episode 14, and the story was going kind of chil way. It's not a good sign. The development was slow. It wasn't hitting that much either. But i didn't ... dropped bcs of that. Stories could have slow development but My main reason was no guarantee of sequel. I know you can say it's a sloppy reason, no anime is fully guaranteed, you have to wait but please hear me out,i have been watching & tracking for a long time. And there's many anime i have watched which has less chance of sequel, in simple hangout. Falling in love with a story and then hit with a hanging... Man i had enough, i have been dealing with this for years. Time is finite. I can't just put my effort if i can't see a clear path. If it gets season announced i might watch but now who knows.
Overall it was fine. Not the greatest but fine. I hope it gives Me a good News.

had i written this at the start of the season, say episode 3, i think i would have had a pretty optimistic reading on the show, but as its dragged on, id say its just getting less and less enjoyable. i simply cannot be bothered dealing with this horrifically shallow characterization. every characters magic does almost exactly what you'd expect, everyone's personality is exactly what you'd expect from their magic. there's not a ton of issue with having easily readable characters in and of itself, but there's good reason that eminence in shadow saves names like "perv asshat" for joke characters and bit villains.

its ... clear as day that the rest of this season is going to be spica getting to know her classmates one at a time (whose names are all, constellation followed by star in that constellation), all the while she will get incrementally better at magic, and it just isnt working. spica has exactly one spell, anima. the ability to produce vines. despite strong showings at the start, it was denigrated the moment she was admitted. being unable to use her one spell to complete school assignments, she learned one new application this episode, human catapult. the spell naturally solved the episodic issue she was faced with, but it's only doing so under willy e coyote cartoon logic. something that caused a tipping point in my opinion of the show, from "generally disappointed" to "the show doesn't respect itself or the audience".

its just unclear to me how serious i should be taking the show? i understand that the shows very premise involves her kissing a cat's butt daily, but look past that, is the rest of the world something to be taken seriously? if a show is intending to have long running storylines involving magic terrorists trying to kidnap spica to access her godly magic, surely some part of that is to be taken seriously.

black clover and mashle are two shows that i believe warrant comparison here. both are comedic in tone and involve a shitty magic system where people by and large, have one element, which usually dictates their personality aswell. id argue both have a more functional magic system, and both are much funnier too. so if you enjoy the comedy bordering on parody part of the show, why not watch mashle? further, if you enjoy the watching people learn magic aspect, why not watch black clover? if the answer is "both of those leads cant cast magic", might i remind you that spica can only cast one spell, poorly, anima magic.

i'll eat my shoe if this anime has a satisfying answer to the question of "why not watch a better anime?", but its not looking optimistic yet. it really does feel like she's learning next to nothing in a school full of clowns. i don't respect any of her classmates, i don't respect her teacher, and i LOST the respect i gave her after the strong introduction.

i don't really rate mashle or black clover that highly, even after reading the manga for both, still, this is a lot worse than any part of either. being generous, 4/10.

for your reading pleasure, ive included the names of her and her class mates at the end, see if you can guess what their magic and personality is from the name alone.

spica virgo, aria aquarius, io taurus, astraea libra, castor/pollux gemini, leo regulus, capella capricorn, ewe aries, merrow pisces, chiron sagittarious aldea, tarf cancer (my personal favorite name), hana sasorijo (yes, she's a japanese transfer student, how could you tell?).
