Black Cat

Completing every job with ruthless accuracy, Train Heartnet is an infamous assassin with no regard for human life. Donning the moniker "Black Cat" in the underground world, the elite killer works for the powerful secret organization known only as Chronos.

One gloomy night, the blasé gunman stumbles upon Saya Minatsuki, an enigmatic bounty hunter, and soon develops an odd friendship with her. Influenced by Saya's positive outlook on life, Train begins to rethink his life. Deciding to abandon his role as the Black Cat, he instead opts to head down a virtuous path as an honest bounty hunter. However, Chronos—and particularly Creed Diskenth, Train's possessive underling—is not impressed with Train's sudden change of heart and vows to resort to extreme measures in order to bring back the emissary of bad luck.

This assassin turned "stray cat" can only wander so far before the deafening sound of gunfire rings out.

Black cat is a 7/10 with a stronger score hidden behind its rushed and jumbled pacing/writing. Theres a great setup and potential. You got two cool factions behind the scenes here with the Chronos and the Apostles that Train and the gang is up against. Liked the cast of characters. Especially Creed. Then theres the seperate plot with Eve and nanomachines which is related to it. But for some reason the anime focuses on a bunch of other stuff way to much of the time and with 23 episodes it never really gets going. And finally when it does focus on it its rushed and ... over so fast. Things dont get fleshed out enough and certain plot points never gets covered or is not explained. New elements and reveals just show up out of nowhere and then its over.

Itssuch a shame. Havent read the manga but it feels like theres a really good story here and with more effort could have been an epic show.

Even still whats here is decent enough still and enjoyable. Some cool characters. Organizations. Music is decent. Its not bad its just a empty unfinished feeling after watching it wanting it to be something more it has potential to be.

Mixed Feelings

This one is really weird. For an anime trying to cram a 185-chapter manga into 24 episodes, it spends a lot of its time just making up random filler episodes and doing its own thing (the last 4 episodes are entirely just fanfiction that takes place after what they adapted of the manga ending), and the manga had already ended by the time this show started, so it's not like they had an excuse. For what it is, it's honestly quite good, and actually does a small handful of things better than the manga, but it misses so much of what made the manga great ... I find it hard to recommend.

My recommendation would be, read the manga, then if you end up loving it as much as I did, watch this one after, it's at least a fun curiosity and for the most part they're entirely different stories that happen to feature the same characters. At the very least, watch episode 10 in particular, it's by far my favourite thing to come out of this adaptation. At the end of the day, both series are a fun and enjoyable experience with some great characters, so it's hard to go wrong either way, the manga simply does a better job of actually exploring the ideas it sets up, compared to the anime which is just sort of weird and does its own thing.

Black cat is a cheesy action, comedy and drama with a little bit of everything: superpowers, magic, nanotechnology, martial arts, bounty hunters, shadowy organizations, railguns and all sorts of super-weapons.

We follow Train Heartnet, a powerful assassin working for the world leaders at Chronos, he decides to trail his own way, and separating himself from the organization won't be easy. The cast is overall likeable but not that deep. I love the "ragtag family" relationship the bounty hunter team has going, and it is such a breath of fresh air to see a child being treated with respect instead of her being sexualized.

If you treat its ... story less seriously, try to take it for what it is and turn off your mind a bit, black cat is a comedic show with unserious action, focused on being showy, having monologues, lots of explosions, big showdowns and all types of eccentricities.

The animation and sound are dated, the pacing is beyond bad, the characters have good personalities but lack depth, the villains are horribly written, there's too many characters to keep track of and without much screen time, we don't get enough world building, we don't get an explanation for the powers, technologies or organizations that we see clash, groups of people come out unscathed from direct machinegun fire, people survive without a scratch after having an entire building collapse on them from an explosion... But the first half was really enjoyable, the biggest issue with this anime is that, halfway through, it diverges through from the source manga, from there the drop in quality is noticeable.

I wouldn't recommend this anime unless you want to get a glimpse into what was popular in the light novel/manga scene of the early 2000s, because this has a poorly executed mish mash of everything. It is also a window into something that happened all the time in the anime scene during those times: Stolen intellectual property! So many good stories taken over by studios to meet deadlines. The ending is infamous due to how rushed and undeveloped it was, it's even hard to keep track of what's happening, totally chaotic and hollow.
