Sometimes, you just want to see cute characters suffer.
I think I got a good amount of anime here. So, I'm closing suggestions for the stack unless the anime is from the Summer 2023 season or newer. If you have an anime that fits that, send me a message and I'll check it out.

This is a part of a series of stacks that are about artistic tendencies in anime (and that border the fine line between sophisticated and pretentious).

Anime with dark/serious plots but with a bright colorful palette for most of the anime. Clear blue sunny skies and saturated colors are to be expected.

NOTE THAT THIS IS BASED ON AESTHETICS ONLY. That means, this has nothing to do with "Not what it seems" as some of these are dark from the beginning despite keeping a constantly colorful palette like Phantom Requiem for the Phantom or Summertime Render.

The plot gets considerably darker in season 2 yet it retains the appearance of season one, which isn't dark enough to make to this list.

NOTICE: Part 2 is up now! The list finally exceeded 50 titles, and 50 is the maximum MAL will allow in one stack. I have moved some of the titles which I feel are a little less overtly “yuri” (but still worth watching!) to my second list so that I can put more straightforward yuri titles in this one as they come out. There are some new titles in part 2 as well.
I’m really happy that this genre has grown so much in the past few years since I started making this list. We’ve come a long way.

The yuri anime genre unfortunately has a reputation for creating relationships between female characters that are incredibly ambiguous. This is a list of anime in which the romantic/sexual relationship between the two girls is very clear (and not one-sided). The girls in question should be major characters and their relationship should be one of if not the biggest driving point(s) of the show.

No hentai titles, as adding even one would get the whole list marked nsfw. Some representation on this list is better than others, and I have provided an opinion under each title.

Mahou shoujo, translated directly to "magical girl"—a genre featuring many young girls receiving magical powers and (more often than not) a dress that's as cute as the aesthetic! Can be treated as a rec list for those new to the genre, as many of these are considered as classics of the genre and may even still be on today's streaming services. Not meant to be a complete/definitive list.

Disclaimer: Magical girl series that received DVD releases for the English audience are prioritized in this list. Most of the series listed here will also have Blu-Ray releases, but I am mainly noting older DVD releases from the 2000s (and earlier); hence why Lyrical Nanoha and its second season are listed here, but not its third season and later which have recently gotten Blu-Ray releases here in the West after being unacknowledged for years. Despite that, I try to list series that can be available on DVD as complete and (hopefully) easily as possible.
Also, expect tons of older shoujo and/or "genre played straight" (as in not that many parodies) examples because of the older DVD priority AND my admittedly obvious bias for them.
