You might think that "anime" started with the first serialized TV shows in the 1960s, but Japan had been making animation long before this, in the form of short films. This article aims to give a tour through the history and evolution of early Japanese animation that led to the serialized shows of the 1960s that eventually led to where we are today. At present, there are over 200 early Japanese animations that have survived and are easily viewable. Here, 44 stand-out works in the chronological evolution of early animation are highlighted for you to check out. All animations listed here can be found online, with English subtitles when needed!

This is a list of the highest scoring anime title that premiered in each year (1900-1949). All titles are considered (TV, Movies, OVA, ONA, etc.).

This list excludes titles that are considered lost media.

Note: MAL lists no titles as being released from 1919-1921.

Part 2 (1950-1999): https://myanimelist.net/stacks/26742
Part 3 (2000-2024): https://myanimelist.net/stacks/27236

For some reason, MAL doesn't display ratings in list view. If you are more interested in that, than my commentary, switch to tile or seasonal view.

1910s Anime:

1917: https://myanimelist.net/stacks/70908

Like with 1917, this year only had one anime that isn't lost media. It seemed to be the year of Kitayama as alot of his work is lost media now. There are no anime in 1919 because they haven't been documented yet.
