If you look at Mushishi season 1, about 62,344 people have completed this series atm.

Around 83,7% of those people gave an 8 or higher for this series.

But if you look at Mushishi season 2, about 8,376 people are watching right now. Why is the amount of people this low? Did they promote the series at all? I can't seem to find any other explanation.

Because it's a sequel, it's at the beginning of it's run, and 60,000 people don't watch an airing anime.

I hope you aren't thinking that this is where Japanese users have their lists, advertising doesn't mean anything on here.

Japanese people don't make lists. They just watch TV.

Only liars like you who need a giant made up reason for people to take you seriously use MAL for the list feature.

No I wasn't thinking that Japanese users have their lists here. But some sequels get a lot of previews and attention and get hyped up on this forum.

Well general forum hype from fans for the show here was high. But overall this isn't a really popular anime and it's not the kind to be really hyped like Mahouka, Meikaku City Actors, and others of this season.

There are people who prefer watching a show once it finished airing, so they don't have to wait weeks for new episodes to come.

This's kinda stupid in my opinion, that's to say, Mushishi is one of these series that could never be marathon-ed so it's better this way to watch a single episode every week. These people are retarded I swear.

I marathoned Mushishi, so it can be marathoned. And maybe watch at their own pace would be better to say. Not neccasarily the whole series in one day but maybe 1 episode a day, two, maybe skipping days, etc. Can't do that while it's airing.

I marathoned Mushishi too. To be precise, I watched the second half of season 1 in one day, but I can understand some people find this hard to marathon since it's such a relaxing, calm and atmospheric show.

I hope I'm no retard :C

Because most of the anime viewers aren't mature enought and rather watch cliché battle shonens, ecchi romcoms. Well it's also a sequel of quite old show so a lot of fans of the first part isn't around anymore.

It's a sequel, it just started airing, it's been 8-9 years since the first season, and there wasn't much hype around the reveal. The special episode itself flew under the radar.

There is a reason series aren't ranked based on the number of members who've watched it. That number only defines the 'popularity' of the series.

Let the plebs watch their shitty light novel adaptations, while we enjoy this masterpiece.

5 main aspects I base my ratings on:
1. Did DramaEnthusiast make a thread about it?
2. Is it better than Breaking Bad?
3. Did MellowJello recommend the shit out of it?
4. Has it caused a (very entertaining) shitstorm on MAL?
5. Is it actually good?

Scratch the fifth point, it's not very relevant...

This anime is very specific, strange one and one of the most interesting one.
Not everyone would enjoy watching this. It may look a bit boring and the drawing style is also kinda strange but there's the beauty and the originality hidden behind that. It's very delicate anime. Just love that :D

I'm an anime fan myself and I truly loved Mushishi, but I didn't watch it until last year. If I wasn't visiting anime pages regularly I wouldn't know of this second season. Also, Mushishi 1 aired about what, 8 years? it's obvious more people will see it as time passes, but don't freak out. also at the moment it's higher scored than a lot of anime lol with 8.82, let's keep it like that and it'll be noticed for more people

You brought up a good point by stating your reasoning.

It may be hard to believe but Mushishi season 1 aired nearly 9 years ago. The dub was introduced in January 2007, and finished in August 2010. Season 2 just started airing this season and the dub has not even been announced yet. This sheds some light on the difference between the number of people who've seen season 1 and the number of people currently watching season 2.

As for the matter of whether there will be a dub, I'm sure there will but it's a matter of when.

I have not caught up with the series yet but even I know how good it is at what it does, but that's just the thing. Despite how much the show looks like a "work of art", it is still a really niche show.

It's episodic, and it's main appeal is how atmospheric it is above anything else. That's an odd combination, and not a lot of people watch anime for that kind of stuff (or even non-anime for that matter), so naturally, you'll have a lot of people not watching this show unless they are in just the right mood.

Combine that with the fact that it's a sequel, and it makes complete sense why the numbers are so low right now.

- Sequel
- 8 years since first one. A lot of people probably don't even know this exists or lost interest.

It's because Mushishi isn't supposed to be aimed at the audience. It's telling a story within each episode rather then appealing to the audiences is needs.

Mushishi is a series that you have to watch yourself and decide if you want to continue or not because the first episode of this series is a judgement episode for everybody deciding whether if goes by their taste or not which clearly a good amount of people aren't appealed by this anime series.

Then you're watching it entirely wrong. Even if you wait for the BD, you're supposed to watch once a day. Mushishi, that is.
