This is the thread for discussing the Myers & Briggs personality types of Free! characters.

Some common opinions:

Haru - ISFJ
Makoto - ESFJ
Nagisa - ESFP
Rei - ISFP
Rin - ENFJ

Agree? Disagree? Want to discuss other Free! characters? Let's hear it!

The Free! boys are hard to type since their personalities are so exaggerated.

Rei is definitely not an ISFP. I interpret him as highly theoretical and a dom or sub Ni user, so I would pin him as INTx who matured his Fe over the timeline of the series.

Makoto is definitely xSFJ and Nagisa is an outright ESFP.

Rin and Haru are difficult ones. My first guesses would be ISTP and ESTP respectively, but I'm not sure. I have to watch the second season :p

What makes you say Ni? Just curious, I'm not well-read on that function in particular. I'd like to understand it more(:

I don't think they are hard to write because they are exaggerated, but rather because they're pretty badly written; especially Rin is hard to type because he's inconsistently written in the LN, High Speed, S1 and S2

Haru: INFP. No way he's ISFJ.
Makoto is a classic ENFJ.
Nagisa is an ENFP.
Rin: ESFJ
Rei: He's tough. As Katastrophee said, he's highly theoretical, and he has a strong Te in S2, so it needs to be either dom or sub. I'm not entirely sure, so I'd go with IxTJ, actually, with a strong tendency for ISTJ.

True. I haven't immersed myself in Free! to know the characters to be honest, it's all based on my single viewing of the first anime season. They are still bland/exaggerated characters in my eyes though.

Biased response because I'm a dom Ni user: Always in cloud nine, thinking about the big picture of the situation, planning ahead, finding the most "iNtuitive" solution, connecting patterns, strong foresight. Some people describe it as an "unconcious a-ha" function, I'm constantly using Ni and I can't "control" it. And that's why INxJs fail in matters of using Se lol.

I agree with Haru's typing as INFP and Makoto as ENFJ. Soulmates cough cough
Nagisa ExFP
Rei IxTJ. I still think he is dom Ni aux Te. Reminds me of all my INTJ friends. But he is also extremely methodical and he can be a dom Si user. It could go either way.
Rin I still don't know, I agree with my "obvious" guess ISTP but that's too easy.

What about the new characters?

Interesting, as I live with two INTJs at home, I don't think Rei at all is INTJ.

Nagisa's episode in the second season should easily convince you to ENFP tbh.

Sousuke is a very clear ISTP, Momotarou is ESFP?, Ai (also from S1) is an ISFJ. I think that's about it heh.

These days I've been rewatching Free! and I've been thinking about their MBTI types...again.
And I'm really glad this thread is here because I could really use an extra opinion. I've been debating this with my friend an hour ago and this is what we have concluded:

Haru - I have no doubt that he is an ISFP now. At least at this point. ISTP he can't be because I personally find him to be rather illogical and I can't see Ti...he has no sense of structure whatsoever. Also...Fe inferior? hardly really...he seems to be Fi user because rules of society are not his concern at all. Also he uses Se...that's obvious. He is in touch with his senses and he reaches them via his feelings. Fi with a little help of Se.

Makoto - he knows how to make people feel comfortable and he is very tolerant of people. Out of all of them, he is kind of a person who can handle just about everybody. He also seems to be very grounded and not very dreamy. The first suggest Fe and the second S rather than N. ESFJ. He seems to be J...he is often mad when Haru is late and doing everything like time doesn't exist. Yup, ESFJ.

Nagisa and Momo (in comparison) - Momo is full blown ESFP...he is very fun-loving person (seems like secondary Fi does that to people XD). He is an Fi user because he is very concentrated on his own feelings. This we can see when he talks about Gou, he often interrupts conversations of others because his feelings towards Gou arouse. He acts warm towards people when he is personally touched, he has to have his own personal feeling to find motivation (this is when he becomes motivated to swim - he doesn't wanna lose again or he wants to swim rely really badly because he just heard a story about last years rely (Rin in iwatobi rely) that really got to him). He is here and now person probably...I have never heard his talk about future and he mostly gets excited in the moment, he also excels in an actual competition (performance) which is clear Se. ESFP it is.
Now when you think about Nagisa. Nagisa is more team oriented and considers how others feel. He also likes to make people feel comfortable. I see Fe in him mostly. He did many things to please his parents. He didn't quit until he eventually snapped. He is less grounded than Makoto for example, his plans for the future (travel around the world and stuff) are pretty much aloof. He is a bit of a dreamer. This tells me N. He is most likely to be an ENFJ of a sort. Not a prototypical one but he puts people in front of him, he was able to organize a whole swim team to bring people together. He is very enthusiastic - NF enthusiastic. He is an extrovert in my opinion and the only NF extrovert with Fe is ENFJ. So I say ENFJ.

Rei - a clear Si user. He gathers information and enjoys doing so. He bases his decisions on his researches and he likes to keep it rational. He thinks out loud very often so he is Te most probably. Now, he is also Fi user. His personal feelings were hit when everybody talked about Rin and he was upset because it affected him - this is what I often see in Fi users. So...ISTJ because I don't see his Fi as inferior, I see it as a tertiary function more.

Rin - oh god!!!! he is a hard one and everyone says so. I can't tell. For a moment he seems like a really cruel ENTJ - he only wants to exceed in life and decides to ditch friendship for it. But he does it not knowing himself and ignoring his true feelings. Well Fi inferiors tend to do that. Is he an extrovert? As a child...he seemed to be an extrovert to me. I think he is T because he is not very attached to people on professional level. He replaced Sousuke for other people because he wanted to swim a rely. He was able to gather people, he is very competitive and he can make people share his ambitions somehow. Well, at least to swim for his ambitions. He also has very nice organizing skills. Solid ones at least. As a captain he knew what he was doing. Then again...when he became a captain he seemed accept feelings more and more. He imposed his personal feelings though (he wanted people to share his wishes and feelings towards rely). He again did it with Haru when he stopped int he middle of the race talking to him about future plans which were in reality his own. He even admitted that. He is very subjective when it comes to feelings - he is an Fi user. He seems to dwell on a past a lot....thinks about future too - his all about past- future connections --> I think this is an N trait. Ns with Fi are these: ENFP, INFP, ENTJ, INTJ. Is he more Fi than Te? Sometimes it seems to be that he tried to fight of his Fi and do only with Te and it got him into a loop (when he went to Australia and came back all groomy). I'd say that naturally he is more in touch with his Fi governing his ambitions. He uses Si...it's more likely...simply because he seems to plan his training and gather research on that. Reading books and stuff. Ni...I can't see it in him. He has no insight in people - not of an Ni sort. He is probably ENFP. I know ENFPs are a bit different usually but..everything points me out towards ENFP. Even though, my guts tells me ENTJ (even though it's not merely guts... there are arguments to think ENTJ as well: doing sports is Se and he is very ambitious and driven. He is organized - showed in specials; Ai and Rin arguing about Ai's mess --> points J).

Ai - submissive type, very loyal. He seems to be disorganized which pisses Rin off. His feelings are according to outward standards - Fe (this can be seen when he idolizes Rin and sees an external value about rely, the value that is shared by many). He is an F...Rin is often to harsh on him and it makes him cry. My guts mostly tells me that he is an ISFJ even though I have very little evidence on his Si and this should be his dominant function. I would say ESFJ but he is no extrovert to me. So it's ISFJ.

Sousuke - another one I can't really type. I'd say he is Fi user, he doesn't like to be responsible for others peoples feelings...but...on the other hand, he ironically acts as a protector which is Fe. He assumes responsibility. He has no sense of direction. All of this tells me one thing: IXTJ. I see no Si in him...he is probably an INFJ.

Gou - no idea...insights please

That's all for me...I tried to think hard about this but I'm kinda indecisive about it. So if you disagree or have different opinions please share. I would really like to type them so I appreciate any kind of debate on the subject. :D

What I curious about is where people see Fe in Rin...especially why do they see him as Fe dominant? I can see him being a group kind of person but Fe dom Makoto is completely different from Rin for example.

Haru: ISTP
Independent, realistic, factual and adaptable. . Haru is also very honest, practical and relaxed but too reserved, gets easily bored and dislike commitment. His passiveness is one of his biggest flaws, despite being incredibly capable, Haru’s passiveness often causes him to under perform.

Makoto: ENFJ
Tolerable, reliable, charismatic and a natural leader. Makoto is a very warm and trust-worthy friend, his enthusiasm and diplomacy are truly inspiring what makes him a great teacher. He often feels compelled to intervene in the lives of his loved ones, perceiving himself to know what’s best for them and this can lead to tension and conflict. This plus being too selfless and too sensitive are his main flaws.

Nagisa: ENFP
Upbeat, enthusiastic and thoughtful. Nagisa is very friendly and a great communicator but at the same time curious and observant. A true free spirit with an irresistible energy. But he is scattered, impractical and rather bad at focusing, he also needs to watch out to not become overly care-free and unrealistic.

Rei: ISTJ (Could be INTJ)
Realistic, perfectionistic and conventional. Rei is practical and put together, he tends to be formal and impersonal in his approach. He may be slightly insensitive and judgemental but he is very honest and loyal. However Rei is stubborn and "always by the book" as he always wants to use the tried and true method for getting things done.

Rin: ESTP
Confident, fearless and perceptive. Rin is practical, has good people skills ans it's direct. He is also pretty rational, bold and fun most of the times. Although being incredibly resourceful and capable his impulsivity and impatience often gets the better of him, other flaw of Rin is his crude and insensitive personality.

Gou: ESFJ
Momo: ESFP
Sosuke: ISTJ
Ai: ISFJ
