to watch or not to watch gundam 00

I want to watch 00 but I have not seen anything gundam yet. I am buying the origins manga later this month. Should I read that first? Or can 00 work as a stand alone thing. Didn't know if this was the right place for this topic but thanks anyway.

I haven't read the Origins manga yet but is that the one that's a remake of the first Gundam? If so, then you can watch Gundam 00 no problem. It's in a different timeline.

Yeah it is (origins), I wanted to read it because despite my best efforts I could not watch the original. In this particular timeline you mention, should I watch 00 first or is there a prequel so to speak? I would look it up myself but gundam continuity confuses me more then Kara no Kyoukai.

The only thing I would add is that while the first season is good, it really kicks it up a notch in the second season. So don't stop!

As to your point

The three power blocs were not "scrapped", rather they conceded power to A-Laws because of their fear of terrorism (and the fact that Ribbons had the technology to match the Gundams). Given how the US reacted after 9-11, I thought this development rather interesting. That there was still "traditional" military to rebel against A-Laws showed that they were still out there. This calls to mind Alan Moore's Watchman series, where the only thing that could prevent the USA and USSR destroying each other was for there to be an external alien threat. CB provided that threat.

And yes, I agree that there were no good individual A-law enemies, but that was what made them better. Human evil is most insidious when plain people are given too much power. Psychopaths kill scores, bureaucrats in their oak paneled rooms signing orders that can kill millions. As the old saying goes: "evil is banal". The Ali type of enemy is a joke, the completely ordinary members of A-laws (some of whom were actually good) was all too human.

I disagree that the second season negated the first. The goal of Celestial Being was to change the world, they succeeded at the end of the first season, it is just that they didn't change it the way they wanted. And because of this in the second season they realized that they had to work with other groups in order to achieve what they wanted - that was more realistic. There is nothing wrong with idealism, indeed it is essential for humanity to progress (which is the theme of the show), but idealism by itself can easily turn to despotism. CB maintained their idealism, but they also were more humble about it.

As for Ribbons being OP. Of course, CB was OP as well. So you had two OP's going at each other. As for him being "bland" and "stereotypical", he was supposed to be. Ribbons represented the arrogance of progress and technology (in short he was CB from the first season), it is depressing utilitarian but again also all too human, the real truth is that wisdom can come from even the humblest places (which is what Marina represented).
