Do you enjoy or pay much attention to background art? Is it underappreciated?

I was thinking about this while reflecting on Mushishi, a series I've been obsessed with lately that explores morality and humanity's relationship with nature. I'll admit, I usually overlook background art, but in Mushishi the atmosphere is often such a strong presence in a story that it's hard to overlook.

Unless it's really in your face beautiful (see: everything P.A. Works), i don't pay much attention to backgrounds, and i'm pretty sure most people are the same, though sometimes i keep note of some interesting choices such as PaniPoniDash's faded backgrounds, Rosario Vampire's surprisingly colorful haunted forest or Hells' use of the CMYK color model.

Obligatory screenshots from P.A. Works works

Ikuhara's anime are also particularly beautiful

+1 on Ikuhara. Especially the Utena movie, the background art was breathtaking. Apparently the animators who worked on the background for the Utena movie are now animators for SHAFT. Guess that explains why I dig Madoka Magica and Bakemonogatari's backgrounds so much.

Ikuhara started as a graphic designer, so he was probably either really good at that or he has a good eye for it. His backgrounds, and even the way his characters stand, have a very distinctive style and composition.

From Mawaru Penguindrum.

Mm, I don't pay attention to background art either unless it's particularly eye-catching or unique. There's this little gem of a show called Porfy no Nagai Tabi that focuses on traveling and draws attention to its stellar background art with sweeping views of Europe's landscapes. It's some of the most detailed and realistic art that I've seen recently.

Wish the pictures were bigger but they'll do:

I'll also mention Rolling Girls from last season. Wasn't a fan of the show, but boy did it have some gorgeous watercolor backgrounds:
