Kinda early to say for now I guess but wouldn't be surprising that there will be even more rotten bosses in this series.
I must say, as rotten as the boss was, his tactics were so good. Make his opponent agree on something and then change the pawns in play around. If it's responsibility you care about like you've said then we've gotten new information and you have to take a new guy. HAHAHA. That's so bad, I love it.
I think the way Seki mocked Tatsuhiko and patted his shoulder to send him off after using him and expending him like he was nothing was the final straw for Tatsuhiko. He is able to restrain his explosive personality when he's around superiors or on order or if it gets in the way of business, but that's due to a respect. I think the conning and crude send off by both the boss and Seki was what made Tatsuhiko realize that he has nothing to hold back for and that's why he picked a fight. The snap where it all clicked- "what the fuck", and instant suit grab and shout was like when he decided "fuck this, I don't owe these people anything", what they stood for disgusted him! And in that ferocious rage that Mako loved about him, beaten down and bruised, he said that chilling line "I'm gonna kill you all!", sending chills down the less experienced faces there indicated with sweat on Tokimasa and Matsukata's faces. That was awesome. After the shock settled in and he realized how despicable these people really are he let them know in a heated rage.
But, like Seki sent him off with a mocking pat to the shoulder, Mako returned to the scene to save him and sent him off with a genuine one. It was an awesome use of imagery and use of contrast between those moments. It redeemed Tatsuhiko's hope. There was enough foreshadowing to guess Mako would do something and like I predicted he did. He actually brought that recorder to the meeting in preparation to save Tatsuhiko if he could, and he freaking did. Mako may be a scary guy, but he's shown to protect his own even when it goes against his boss. But, like Tatsuhiko noted, both bosses were willing to expend their own people for their gain and manipulate them and Burst's boss let out that conceded smile. I think it was because, like we've been shown, he's sensitive to the fact that he's become so repugnant with no sense of values and that was to him, a reminder of Mako keeping him in check. A reminder of why he has such a powerful position in their business.
I sincerely loved the way Mako gave Tatsuhiko a genuine pat to the shoulder after the terror struck and all that occurred. The serious pout he gave as he was walking away was all we needed to see it meant the world to him. Seki and the boss tossed him into the pit of fire he was trying to save Seki from, and like a guardian angel Mako tossed him a rope.
That and Seki's moment of mocking the boss for having the crude tactics that he was opposed to fail was also nice. These characters feel like they have some real depth. Despite Seki's betrayal I think everything gathered about him last chapter was real too. And, I think he truly had some good times with Tetsuhiko on their job. For the record I still do like Seki.
I LOVE THIS MANGA! I guess seeing if Tatsuhiko will be corrupted will be a theme. Also, I think it hinted at him having a greater purpose than getting a pretty lady at the end.
I said this in my first writing, but to say it again; seeing Yamashiro question if he’d changed in the beginning and later crack a defeated smile felt as though he was glad his friends were there to stop him from crossing that line. It’s a warm moment.
The speed of which Mako reached Hayama may have suggested that he did already have him in close contact.
Most importantly though, this chapter represents the real starting point of Mako’s most insidious trait. The whole caring for his subordinates schtick may have rubbed off on Tatsuhiko, and perhaps he actually values Nekoma and Tatsuhiko; who knows, but after seeing what he does to Hideyoshi and later his actual subordinate Inukai throws that all into whack. This is especially the case when you see him win Inukai’s loyalty only to toss him away, not unlike these events suggest. This was a moment where I said to myself, Mako may have questionable morals and may be cruel but he is a reliable man of conviction that may want his subordinates to work hard but in return will save them as if it were nothing. The last part shown beautifully by him telling Tatsuhiko that it was “no big deal” after saving him in a moment of such despair, an echoed sentiment to many other moments in the manga. I had thought that he valued his men over all else, but when I found out they could be instrumental to him and that this admirable strength of Mako’s was at worst manipulation and at best breakable when he saw fit, it hurt. Yet, it gave me such a nuanced relationship with his character that I adore it.
