"A Sad Birthday" or "The Singing Contest"

It starts out pretty conventionally. Very classic feel. Although they really changed the setting from the original novel....

By the way, the subs should be out soon if nothng wrong happens. Anime-Himitsu is soon releasing it....

Ok, now let me TL check the second episode.....

The endless debate between fans and haters. At one point, after spending a lot of time on MAL, you just realize it's totally pointless.

On MAL, everyone who has used the lame rating system becomes a critic and an intellectual by default, haven't you heard?

I saw the first episode of this subbed by Takara Subs and I think it's adorable so far! So yeah, a lot of things have been changed from the original, but that doesn't mean that this series doesn't have any good qualities! I'm gonna watch more of this along with the Dezaki version!

I don't know the original at all, but I still loved this first episode. :)

Didn't expect the father to be like that, but go figure considering he has a friend like that...

I've had my sights set on this one for a while, but wasn't really sure what to expect. Reminds me of a standard WMT start. I already like Remi, very energetic and fun to watch. Lovely voice too. Poor Rousette though. It's also sad to see how quickly the father turned on Remi once it became harder to make ends meet. Blood related or not, family is supposed to mean more than that.

By definition, everything is retro since by the time you realize something has happened it's already in the past.

Where the fvck are the dogs?
"Manga readers are annoying, all they do is complain or spoil the anime we discuss in an anime forum.
They should really do their whining at manga forums.

There is something so human and warm in those old shows, I love it.
I remember watching the "boy version" (much more accurate from what I've heard, I 'll probably watch it afterwards) of this story when young, but I barely remember anything when it comes to the story aside from the fact that it is very, very sad.
And well, I can see why. One episode in and it's already tragedy after tragedy.
I feel like this is going a bit too fast but it's still good ! Remy's pretty cute, she kinda reminds of Emma from The Promised Neverland, I don't know why. I'm very intrigued to see where this story is going !

I picked this show up on a whim because I'm trying to get into some older anime, and I am floored by how good this first episode is. If it were a self-contained 20-minute short I might have considered it for my top 10 on MAL! I'm not sure if the show's quality will be maintained for 23 episodes, but that was one hell of a first impression. The old european aesthetic of the backgrounds and the scenario, Rosette (I think that's the cow's name?) lowing in the background when characters are talking, Remy's father being an abusive deadbeat, everything except the dog wearing a fancy hat is very in-line with what I would expect from a period piece of this sort.
