^ He seems very happy with how it turned out, and even thinks it transcends his original work!
I can't decided whether he's being genuine or just going through the motions of the promo event.

The budget aside, I honestly thought it was a pretty neat adaptation. Sure enough the artstyle wasn't enough to compensate the art the manga had but I thought they did a good job setting up the tone and atmosphere for the serious stories(at least for me) and made the Souchi episodes comedy work which I think is a plus considering comedies of those type usually fall flat. The cutting at some stories wasn't really enough to leave a tint on the said stories.

I haven't read the article but after writing this it seems like I was right on the Souchi part. I think his thoughts are pretty genuine. Doesn't seem like he's as nitpicky as the other people who has read his works.

I also think that most of the hate comes from newer fans who got swept by the hype surrounding Ito. Considering he's well regarded. Most of his stories weren't really meant to be conclusive to begin with but I see a lot of people complaining about that. I think it's more of a premise and execution type of thing than primarily being plot-based.

Akira Toriyama said the same thing about Evolution and Ogata on Netflix Death Note with Dindu L. It's not true, imo they are just playing the game. If they openly bash the adaptation no studio will want to work with them, if you sat down with anyone of them and asked what do you really think? All 3 or 4 would say it was shit.

The art is no big deal, its the choice of stories adapted and the weird pauses in the middle of interesting parts rather than continuing the story, I get it's an anthology but cross roads pretty boy is one of the more interesting works and it barely got through the first act.

Publicity is a thing and nobody is above it.

Maybe it's a skew of perspective but all the criticism I had heard was from people who are well versed in his work, including the short stories that were adapted. It's also not satisfying for the usual audiences; not scary for horror fans, not exciting for Ito fans, kinda dull for a casual watch. I tried watching this buzzed and was so unaffected. Taste is a thing obviously but I don't know whose sweet spot this hit.
