So season 1 was great. But the movie was meh.. So LN readers, what should we expect from the story? Does it get better?

Thank you :)

I did start reading the LN but that was before the movie came out and I don't think I read more than one volume at the time.

But most LN readers do say positive things about it, however, the guys who do read LN are massive fans of the series so I guess we should take their opinion with a bit of salt.

Visitor Arc will enjoy Anime Only more than S1. It's full of action and Godlike battles. Is one of the best LN I ever read. Hyped for S2

There are some pretty neat stories among the coming arcs, but the general formula remains the same. I see Mahouka as kind of a slice of life set in a futuristic world. You may have terrorist attacks, political powerplays between the clans or nations and mysterious magical phenomena, etc. - but at the end of the day it always returns back to the school life of the protagonists. So currently no continuous story ramping up to a climax in sight or any of that. But more of an hinting of things that slowly destabilize the order of things in that world. In this it kinda resembles how the storyline was set up in "Toaru Majutsu no Index".

As for what is going to be shown. I'd say expect the past arc to be animated, showing how Miyuki's and Tatsuya's relationship came about to be surrounding the first attack on Yokohama (we only got the glimpse of that with the scene at the very start of the first season). And then we get the Visitors Arc where Lina (the blonde american mage from the movie) will be introduced. She is on the same power level as Miyuki and her confrontation with Tatsuya is also pretty epic.

And then we have the start of the new school year with quite a few new characters like Mayumi's twin sisters.

This Arc also includes Valentines Day, which'll be nice. And personally, I can't wait for the 'touching of the dragon scales' by Erika later on.

My guess is ~24, because it's a 3 Part Arc, and there's quite some story important stuff, that I think they shouldn't skip.

Season 1 had so much talking, and it was too cookie cutter. Everyone enjoys different things, but its a 3/10 show.

I usually don't like anime like these but i found S1 to be pretty competent even though that are several bad aspects about it.

I would really love for this to be 24 but I have my doubts. The first TV series covered 6 volumes of the light novel series. Raihousha (Visitor) is only 3 volumes in the light novels so if the pace is the same as the first series it would end up being closer to 12 episodes than to 24. I totally agree that there's plenty of great material in Raihousha to allow for 24 episodes, but they skipped a lot of great stuff in the first series too so that's not guarantee of length.

The popularity of the series is on a whole other level today compared to where it was in 2014 so hopefully that means they have the budget to justify 24 episodes.

The author's statement on the new series https://tsutomusato.jp/news/ doesn't have a lot more details. He mentions that he himself was surprised that a second series was happening and described Raihousha as different from the first series in that it's more about team play and relationships, including love, than the first series was.

>Don't expect Tatsuya to just steamroll his way through every problem like the 1st season, as he's going to have to face challenges and foes that will make him have to plan and create ways in order to overcome. Of course he'll still be doing awesome stuff, but he'll certainly be challenged more this time around.

>Expect plenty of action, the scale isn't gong to be as large at the Yokohama arc, however there's gonna be several battles/skirmishes taking place throughout the arc.

>Expect to see more of the 10 master clans and learn a bit more of the politics and espionage side of things, especially from the Yotsuba Clan and Saegusa Clan.

>Expect to see some character growth from Tatsuya, this arc is kinda the first one in the series that truly shows he can grow as individual and develop strong bonds with others outside of his sister. Not like the previous arcs didn't have it, but Visitors emphasizes it more, especially with the relationship Tatsuya and Lina have over the course of the arc.

>And lastly, get ready to meet Lina. The movie teased her a bit, but Visitors will be her full introduction. Lina's one of the big highlights this arc has to offer and she's a strong addition to the cast. She's challenges Miyuki and Tatsuya in more ways than one and she even goes through her own character arc in Visitors, where by the end of it all, she'll have strong development of her own. She's pretty popular among LN readers and personally my best girl(sorry Mayumi, I still love you!), so I'm really excited to her popularity potentially growing with this adaptation(looking forward to all the new fan art too).

Here's, Satou, the LN author's thoughts and expectations:
"Production of the 'Visitor Arc' anime is decided. I think many people were surprised by this news. I was also surprised when I heard it for the first time. I had thought that 'The Girl Who Calls the Stars' film was the last one in The Irregular at Magic High School's anime adaptation project. So I am especially happy that we will show the activities of Tatsuya, Miyuki, and their friends in the anime once again. Also, I feel lucky that we will be able to introduce Lina (Angelina Kudou Shields), who made a sudden appearance in the film, including her character's background.

In contrast to the previous 'Enrollment Arc,' 'Nine School Competition Arc,' and 'Yokohama Disturbance Arc," this 'Visitor Arc' includes strong occult elements, but I am confident that viewers will enjoy it more than the previous arcs. The highlight of 'Visitor Arc' is not a big destruction like the one happened in 'Yokohama Disturbance Arc,' but the team play supported by friendship (a part of it is love). Please look forward to seeing the power of the young characters' bond."

1st season covered volumes 1-7(but skipped 5 cause it was mainly side stories), so start at volume 8.

Yen Press has volumes 1-12 out and translated already(13 comes out this month I believe), for fan translations you should be able to find them on the mahouka reddit or discord channel.

I've seen it countless times - a series gets a movie that skips a massively significant amount of core material then ends up getting another TV season. Unfortunately most of the time the 2nd season occurs as a prequel or sequel to the movie and not as a direct sequel to the 1st season.

I am not expecting much from this season going solely on past trends and not having read the source. The 2nd season material itself may be good and faithful to the source, but I am highly confident anime-only consumers are going to get severely shafted due to a massive gap in information that only source readers will know.

Well, yeah. I still have no idea who thought the movie was a good idea. Nothing like showing a character completely unknown to viewers, that plays as a second POV, with a clear relationship to MC :P

8bit (the new studio) did the movie, which I thought was animated pretty well, so I'm not worried.

Yea I was looking into season 1 and found out we were getting a season 2 which I was super hyped for! Then I found out it was changing studios which I didn't think would be too bad (Hey season 2 after 9 years, beggers can't be choosers)

Found out apparently 8 bit studios hasn't put out really any quality anime? I looked up what people thought about the studio and most was negative, but thought I would check their list of anime produced. The slime anime is the only thing they have produced with a score over 8, everything is much lower. Makes me worried however after doing some quick glances at the movie animation quality I'm hoping it turns out well. Apparently the Movie was filled with lots of fanservice, and I seriously hope season 2 turn into one of those kinda anime...

Yeah, their shows haven't exactly been great, but I find that blame less on the studio and more on the source material. The movie was filled with fanservice since it was iirc dedicated for the fans and a complete side-story, as its story is not in the main set of light novels.

Ahhh thats a relief. Yea I imagine a big part of having all those low scores is source material, and I expect them to do at least decent with this source material. With all the fanservice in the movie I imagined it probably had to have had something to due with the source material having a lot of fan service as I couldn't imagine them throwing in that much just cause. Welp, here is to hoping for a great season 2! And maybe more to come? The novels are on volume 30 so damn if there isn't enough source material

This is actually pretty awesome to hear. My biggest critique of this show was its lack of tension because Tatsuya beat everyone and everything too easily. I still liked it somewhat due to the interesting magic system and soundtrack.

But with this, Mahouka might actually go from generally being received as bad to at least mid.

Although I don't see it happening , I hope this will get a 24 episodes rather than the standard 12 ones

” Then she brought him to her people, carrying him. They said, “O Mary, you have certainly done a thing unprecedented. O sister of Aaron, your father was not a man of evil, nor was your mother unchaste.” So she pointed to him. They said, “How can we speak to one who is in the cradle a child?” [Jesus] said, “Indeed, I am the servant of Allah. He has given me the Scripture and made me a prophet. And He has made me blessed wherever I am and has enjoined upon me prayer and alms tax as long as I remain alive. And [made me] dutiful to my mother, and He has not made me a wretched tyrant. And peace is on me the day I was born and the day I will die and the day I am raised alive.” That is Jesus, the son of Mary—the word of truth about which they are in dispute. It is not for Allah to take a son; exalted is He! When He decrees an affair, He only says to it, ‘Be,’ and it is. [Jesus said], “And indeed, Allah is my Lord and your Lord, so worship Him. That is a straight path.” [Holy Quran : Chapter Maryam (Mary) : 23-36]

So, can any LN readers tell me if Tatsuya meets any challenges in this arc? And I mean an actual challenge, not that "I can't go all out, so I'll act like I'm struggling for 5 mins, and then kick his ass" nonsense.

If this is going to follow that same formula, I'll be passing on this.

@allblue1

About Tatsuya meeting new challenges... He does meet new challenges, but even those challenges may not be what you're expecting...

The thing about Tatsuya is that the most overpowered aspect about his magic is that it's very hard to kill him. The Visitor Arcs introduces new enemies that are VERY hard to destroy and that will pester Tatsuya for a long time (for reference, Visitors Arc starts at the 9th volume, at the 31st volume Tatsuya is still fighting enemies that are "related" to the Visitors Arc. The LN will end at Volume 32, so they have been there for a LONG time). Although Tatsuya's firepower is great, it's not enough for him to defeat his enemies on their first encounters anymore. But it doesn't mean his enemies can defeat him anyway, Tatsuya just needs more time to develop new magic and grow into an even more OP badass :)

Just wait 'til our Onii-sama pawned them all down and we shall hail our praises! The one true Onii-sama has return!

Lina literally is so kawai in this arc so I'm very excited for her tsun tsun moments... If I remember correctly, Yostuba family will heavily play in this arc. The things that this will cover is surely about the Vampire, which is basically.... USNA's fault to sum it all up.

I expected the anime adaptation to cover vol.9-15 but I guess that's not gonna happen. I was expecting Steeplechase to be adapted and I'll be hailing Onii-sama from my seat while I throw buckets of rice and stuff in the air..
