Zolomon's Jewels.

No Tezuka history lesson, but my probably wrong theory that would mean Tezuka didn't like this one and I would get it. I did enjoy this story, there some interesting ideas, some great designs , some really shocking developments (did not expect the Professor to out-right down), and it was pretty interesting all throughout. Actually for the most part I did remain entertained but I think this story had a lot of issues.

For starters there were a lot of fourth wall jokes in this, and I really don't like them. Usually it's not a problem but they were too frequent here. While not a fourth wall gag, Hikaru calling James the Third III, James the Fourth because he wanted to demote him got a good chuckle out of me. Hikaru's part of the problem though, as is L44 and their desire to become human, these stuff were never really resolved. With L44, it's literally just in the first scene then it's never addressed again, but L-44 was pretty cool. For Hikaru, we kind of get resolution, his plan is foiled and he does face consequences but it just feels empty to me, like I wanted more characterization to close his story. I really wanted a scene with Hikaru and his father at least. Instead the two halves of the story just feel almost entirely disconnected, besides Astro neither halves of the story even really feature the same cast, Zolomon's basically only there in brief segments. The story as a whole just feels to segmented, to disconnected, I think if they ended the story with seeing Hikaru and his father, maybe the two story segments would've felt more cohesive.

I can't say I didn't enjoy or like this chapter, but it was one of the more disappointing affairs thus far.

I really loved this chapter. Firstly the paneling and art were amazing. The plot was great too, but like the dude above said some loose ends were left untied. Like L-44 wanting to become a human or Hikaru's whole story. With L-44 it doesn't really matter that he didn't get to become a human since apart from the first time he appears his goal is never mentioned again. But Hikaru's subplot just doesn't really feel like it's in the spirit of the manga. I fully expected him to realize that it's good to be a human and to learn to love robots, which did not happen at all. But maybe Tezuka was intentionally aiming for that? Maybe he's suposed to be a somewhat bad guy and I've just got the character completely wrong. Still those things don't really affect the chapter for me.
