Lack of character backstory explanation

Imo it makes it harder to empathize and like the characters... for example, kousaka's one of the main characters of the series, but all we know is that she wants to become 'special'... like,, why u wanna become special girl?? Even kumiko's backstory from middle school wasn't thoroughly explored... pls tell me season 2 will be better

There isn't much backstory to Reina in S2 but there is to Kumiko and Asuka in S2. S2 is definitely better if you are talking about progression.

One thing I do remember about Reina is that she actually very competitive person. After her school lose the competition in junior high school she even become more determine to step up her performance as a trumpet player. And don't forget she also try to impress her teacher because she loves him by joining the Kitauji high school where his teacher works now. I think that explain all her motives already.

It's not like you have to empathize with her entirely at first. Remember how Kumiko felt enchanted by Reina in the hill and think just how special she is, given by the really gorgeous depiction with all the great animation, music, and directing. In this season, she was depicted as sort of a mysterious, higher person that Kumiko really look up to, which gives Kumiko the more reason to pursue her goal to get better with her Euphonium playing. Things take time to develop, to be explained, and just because it doesn't happen at the time you want it to happen, that doesn't necessarily mean that the show fails to depict a well written character. Try to give a bit of a chance to see this season in a different light, and maybe you can see the good in the creator's choice of hiding her motivation to be special.
