I think it’s a mess of a story, but I don’t think there’s much to expand on.

I'd rather the studio committed time to something that is actually good than expand of this dumpster fire.

However, if they were dead set on doing more mars red I would want a remake more than a second season.

As much as I enjoyed the world and characters of the show, it was just the absolute worst story telling I've seen in a hot minute.

"Dumpster fire" lol, I hazard a guess the last sentence of the top review for Mars Red describes you.

by the second half of the season after the earthquake I had no idea what was happening. From what I can gather Scottish vampire guy was manipulating the country via illegal blood trading while secretly creating an army to usurp Japan's current vampire system. That's all well and good but I have a lot questions, why is miada brainwashed? How does kurusu know the news lady? Why does the news lady remind miada of his actor girlfriend at all? What happened to the Scottish vampire guy he didn't die surely? And most importantly why tease a season two that's supposed to take place in modern day.

Lmao same. After the earthquake I felt so lost. Wait where did they tease a second season in modern day?

theirs an after credit scene that shows the characters in modern day and the white haired actor kid on Broadway. Now that I think about it I think they were implying that the whole show was a play.

It got very confusing later, so IMO I don’t recommend it.

Oh that made sense because the show is adapted from a stage reading.

At least half of what you don’t understand is due to not paying attention or missed key points rather than the show not explaining it. Yes there confusing points but the main plot is serviceably laid out.

I don’t think this is an amazing show, but in the context of how MAL usually rates things, this doesn’t deserve an to below a 7.

The show is a mess after the earthquake and the timeskip in chapter 12 didn't help because it could've clearly made some impactful scenes.
But a lot of your questions are actually answered.

Maeda is not brainwashed, he has the same problem as Misaki. Turned into vampire but got stuck in mental shock derived from his conversion at the gates of death.
Kurusu is her childhood friend, and both lived with her family and grew as siblings until he left for the war.
Looks I guess? Is a recurring theme since chapter 1 but I think is a mistake donde by the designers by not reading that key point.
He was inside an illusion and drowned. I doubt vampires can walk below the water and even if he tried to go swimming to the shore, it was already morning.

Dude, all of that stuff you just said were there. You just weren't paying attention. Some of those things happened in early episodes so you may had not thought they were important. But it was all there.

Just watch it if you enjoy it. There's no point in watching a show you don't enjoy. And I personally enjoyed this show. It was original in its own way.

As Maeda was about to die, Deffrot made him drink his blood so he would survive and become a vampire. But we've seen it a hundred times int he anime - not all vampires are able to regain consciousness as Kurusu. There are tons of them who are just senseless killing machines, and that's what happened to Maeda.
Kurusu and the newspaper lady (Aoi) were childhood friends and I'm not sure if they were married, but if they weren't, they were at least supposed to do so after Kurusu returned from war, which basically didn't happen, since he "died" there and became a vampire.
The newspaper girl (Aoi) met Maeda so many times in front of the theatre where his dead girlfriend (Misaki) was playing. And in the last episodes, she was practicing for the same role as Misaki. She even had the stage clothes Misaki was wearing. So it's clear why Aoi would remind Maeda, moreover because he was senseless and had that strange dream/hallucinations.
Also there was said a few times that vampires can't swin, so the scottish dude surely had drown there.

sorry that my small brain couldn't comprehend this grand story. Good to see we have Rick and Morty fans here.

anyone who defends this anime and claims it is a masterpiece is not entirely unfounded, but ultimately I would say they are flawed.

This show is incredible. The first episode is one of the best first episodes of any anime ever. If the entire show was just that single episode I would give it a 10/10. But it didn't end there. Instead the show slowly began to devolve in the ensuing episodes. Then along came episode 7, which reminded us of just how good the series could be. We had become desensitised to the bland shit it had become and episode 7 raised the bar of what Mars Red should have been. Alas, following that the show devolved into an even greater travesty. Continuity errors reigned, characters just disappeared mysteriously for entire episodes. Things seemed to have happened offscreen that were of significance to the plot. I was sure that this show was just an accident. They somehow managed to make two masterful episodes, and the rest was shit. However episode 13 released, and proved to us all this is the level of quality Mars Red was also supposed to have been at. Looking back it made me realise that the previous episodes I had so hated were mere fragments of a grander (and probably much longer) show that was consistently good.
I am convinced this show went through a production hell. Perhaps budget cuts midway through the anime? Perhaps the writers quit? Who knows why this ended up the way it did. But what I can be sure of is that what we saw was not the original work planned. Episode 1, 7 and 13 are proof of what this show was meant to be.

And so I am torn. What we got was a mess. But underneath that was a masterpiece that surfaced only for the milestone episodes. The hidden plot of Mars Red is easily 10/10, the best anime of the season. However the shit, convoluted execution we got is a 6 at best, probably closer to a 4. This anime fascinates me in a way no other show has before.
