For somebody who has taken clarinet lessons for 10 years and played in a wind band for 6 years, the music played in this anime just seems insanely advanced. I find it kind of unrealistic that a high school band can play that well and in crazy tempos. Many of the players supposedly only started playing their instruments recently, and yet they play at pretty much a professional level in my eyes. Is it just that my band the bands i have encountered in competitions are lousy, or does it have to do with asian bands just being really good? Do others on this forum the music to be crazy advanced, or is it just me?

It’s definitely pretty advanced for a high school level band, I see it more as a college level. I’ve played euphonium (nice) all through middle and high school and I’m going into college for music, and the music they play is definitely not standard HS level stuff imo. But I have seen some stuff about high school bands in Japan being really really good, so honestly it’s not that surprising. Especially considering all of the students in the show are really passionate about band and all want to do well. So with the combined work ethic and an inspiring teacher I could see a high school playing at the level. But nothing more than what they play, anything higher is just ridiculous for any high school player.

Well i'd like to agree, considering some of the pieces they played (Liz and the Bluebird) were some of the best i've ever heard. But I do think there is more than one reason for this:

1) Very High Standards - Taki sensei asked the club what they were aiming for and they agreed on competition, so he probably had them work extensively to a level where they were good enough to compete (Japanese Mindset).

2) To appeal to whoever's watching - The music they played was stunning, no questions about it, and that is a part to why this show is so good. The quality of music paired with smooth Art and animation only betters the watching experience. Mediocre (slighly more realistic) pieces probably wouldn't have the same impact.

3) To Increase Realism (kinda Ironic) - If you listen very, very carefully to some of the pieces, none of them are played in the same way. The same piece could be played 4-5 times, but each time a very small element would change. In some practises, some instruments would come in too early, the tempo may speed up slightly in random areas because of nervousness or emotion can be heard in the way some characters blow through their mouthpiece, especially if they are crying [refer to ensemble scene from "liz and the Bluebird movie]. If the music hadn't been audibly played perfectly through at least once, then these small details that add a more realistic feel to the ensembles wouldn't be heard

I’m not familiar with anything about instruments nor bands, but I’m pretty sure it’s for entertainment purposes. I wouldn’t watch the show if it sounded like my high school band lol. I guess making the band sound too good for a high school and good quality animation, some sort of viewers will be pulled in.

Question for people with some sort of info with Instruments and bands: Do any high school bands actually sound this good?

Everyone could be more motivated in practising for the competition to perform well when you got hot teacher on your back. Technically one of the best musical show ever with the intricate details that Kyoani put in recording those performance.

I wondered the same question abd went searching. The Japanese top HS wind bands are this Good indeed. There's even a HS from Kyoto performing the same exact music (obviously a tribute do Eupho) at the same station they performed in the show.

I mean, japanese high schoolers can be really pushed to their hardest effort in the clubs, practicing even on the weekends and vacations.

Yeah, I guess the skill level does make sense considering how much the band is shown to practice in the anime. My own experience with wind band music comes mainly from my own band that consists of kids aged around 13-20 (mostly high schoolers though). We practised once a week, with additional practice around concerts. The band in Hibike definitely is more advanced, but the higher amount of practice considered their skill level makes sense. And it's not like the difference is huge, as our band has fared pretty well in different competitions in my home country and even in a couple international competitions (sorry for the brag). Anyway, thanks for the input y'all!
