The main reason why I ask this question is that in volume five of the SAO light novels, there was a very big mistranslation, that I was able to confirm was a big mistranslation. And that made me suspicious for what I’m about to describe to you in this post.

It’s a couple things actually. First off, there was that whole “creepshot photographer” scene, at least that’s how Sakuta describe them as, which I personally thought was a little over the top in of itself. But the one thing that he said which was extremely over the top, was “ you’re old enough to know better. What you were doing makes me ashamed to be the same species as you“. And yes, that’s an actual quote from the Yen Press version. Now we obviously know Sakuta’s personality. And considering that he’s so non-interventionist, and just flat out avoiding other people most the time, I was taken aback that he would go this far, which makes me suspicious about the translation.

Plus, towards the end of the chapter, some of the things that Kaede was saying was very out of character for her as well. especially when in response to Sakuta saying that this looks like that he brought a girlfriend home, she responded, again in the translation, “ I don’t even want to consider that nightmare scenario“. Considering the fact that she was still in a childish mindstate, at this point in the story, I was a bit surprised by this kind of response. I mean, I knew that she had feelings for him, but in the anime, this was far from something that I would expect her to say. Which again, is the reason why I’m suspicious of this translation.

Please let me know either way whether or not it is a good translation. Because I really do love this series, and I already saw the anime twice, I would love to continue the story via the light novels. I just want to make sure that this is the right translation of the light novels to read.

Hey dude, do you still need info? I read these in Japanese and own the Light Novel series, so if you just give me a rough chapter/page number I can take a look and tell you if the translation looks about right or not. :)

Edit: Found the one with Kaede. It's Sakuta saying something like "Well, different people just interpret this differently. If you look at it normally, wouldn't you think your big brother simply has brought home a girlfriend?" To which she replies "I do not wish to imagine that worst-case scenario." I think you could argue the translation is about right (I'm not a translator, so mine is extremely literal)

I appreciate the response, but I actually found out from someone else on another forum. And with the other scene in question as well, and they gave me the explanation that I would understand why in future chapters in volumes. But once again, I thank you for responding.

It is overall a very enjoyable light novel series, and I’m currently working on the second chapter of the first volume. And I can’t wait to be able to get to the rest of it, especially over this coming holiday weekend.
