might be my favourite episode in this series yet. stark is such a good character, and all of the building up in the series was so worth it for this episode.

The hamburger steak scene legitimately got me crying. The moment Stark realizes he's always been loved... ;_;

When a new generation comes of age, they romanticize the heroes of the past. The truth of who a person falls away, and they become an idea.

Well, that's a line that strikes deep. I'd say this reminds me of a core theme of a certain other series, but to name that series could very well be a spoiler. Nonetheless, when viewing the past from the present, the truth is kept only through artifacts and first-hand accounts. The latter can be distorted through lies and old age, while the former can be reinterpreted through the lack of the latter providing context. As such, the past can be seen through either pessimistic or optimistic perspectives, and thusly painted over with such views.

In pursuit of the truth, would it be better to uncover all the potential ugliness and tragedy, or would it be better to leave the past as a romanticized fairy tale? Would it be an injustice to those of the past to hide away their suffering, or would it also be a cruel to dig up that same suffering and paint over their legacies with tales that they may not want to be remembered by? To put it in more personal terms, would you want to remember your loved ones in their happy moments, or their sad moments? Would your loved ones want you to remember them at their best, or at their worst?

Perhaps the dichotomy itself implies a false dilemma, and perhaps the thought puts words in the mouths of people whom had no such worries to begin with. It really is a luxury of the present: to redefine the past however they choose. For Frieren, who has a stellar memory and had lived long enough to become a fabled legend herself, I can only wonder how she feels about people speak regarding her friends and travel companions. In real life terms, I can only wonder how people feel about history books retelling things that happened in their lives.

This episode really made me tear up, especially during Himmel’s flashback huhu. The village leader was so cute, and I loved that they celebrated Stark’s birthday. It was also nice to learn more about him—his brother seems really kind too.

So far this may be my fav episode of the anime! I didn't know that Stark's past was a little dark but damn. Still funny how Fern called Stark a perv multiple times, also I found out the meme about Frieren holding an item and smiling like Anya making that face where and where It's come from.

I wasn’t the biggest fan of Stark when he first showed up, but his backstory was quite good. I’m glad the anime is picking up in the emotional department, despite the tease being back in the first episodes.

Himmel deciding to become a hero purely out of spite toward Heiter cracked me up. Peak pettiness, but honestly very on-brand for him lol.

And yeah, I have no idea what reaction Stark was expecting from Fern with those clouds. She was never going to see whatever he thought he saw. At least he still got his birthday steak in the end.

Overall, a really nice and wholesome episode.
