The manhwa is one of my favorites of all time, if not my absolute favorite. I felt like the first hundred or so chapters weren't the best (which is roughly how far we've gotten in the anime so far), but they were nowhere near this bad. How has the studio managed to mess it up so bad? Have they just pulled some One Piece level of pacing? Is the animation style hurting the series that bad? Are they not doing enough to adapt from manhwa to anime (given that they are very different mediums and therefore have different needs artistically)? What is everyone's take on the biggest reasons for the massive difference in quality?

Animation is poor and pacing is insanely quick compared to the manhwa. The directing in s2 also isn't the best. While s1 skipped the directing made it feel natural but s2 has abrupt cuts and jumps to try and fit everything into a time-frame that needs to skip some details.

The animation is the main problem though. The fights are mediocre at best and ep8 was horrible. Good animation in the future seasons could save this series. S2 is getting more likes on CR than s1 so a s3 should be made. Hopefully this studio steps it up in s2 c2 or we get a new studio for s3

The animation's choppy and inconsistent. The voice acting is not the greatest, not as much emotion as before and sometimes it feels slow. The quality overall has taken a pretty big hit.

Yeah man, Tower of God manhwa for me is probably one of the best works that I ever read.

But this anime second season its HARD to watch. Animation is terrible, pace of the story is all over the place, and lets be real season 1 art direction was so unique and they just decided to throw that away tho change to this generic art. Its a bummer but Tower of God anime sucks (at least second season) ;-;

It looks like the goal of the anime is just to hit the major plot-points and that's it, but that's not how a story works. The depth from the story often comes from things that are added alongside the plot-points.

First of all, the anime fails at building the characters as real people. The characters here are presented as very bland because they're on-screen to the bare minimum to know who they are. But in the manhwa the earlier interactions between Horyang and Arkraptor help to build them as more compassionate people, especially Arkraptor's paternal instincts. One of the most important scenes in the manhwa was skipped, that being the reason why Bam's master agreed to train him. Instead, all we got was the final line, "I'll show you how to become a god." without the context. Then the post-fight dialogue for Urek Mazino was made much more cliche to make it painfully obvious that Bam is supposed to be special, whereas the subtlety in the way that Mazino noticed the scratch, realized it's origins, and got excited was much more engaging.

On top of this, many anime viewers have forgotten the core concepts of the tower after these 3 years. But this is only made worse by dialogue cuts in the fight of Bam vs Love, so viewers don't understand how big of a deal that a regular fighting against a ranker is. Then the anime fails to describe what actually happened in the timeskip after Bam's team fought Urek, so nobody knows what floor Bam is on (floor 28) and the floor that Khun is on (floor 29) to contextualize the 2-year timeskip. The manhwa simply had textboxes with '28F' and '29F', so why couldn't the anime do the same. An adaptation is surely terrible, when anyone can insert a textbox in the top-left corner and make it a better watch. Then, Khun's team is shown to be put into a test when we know absolutely none of the rules, so how is the viewer expected to follow along. The manhwa also gave a short textbox for this as well, but the anime did nothing to make up for the lack of narration.

All of this is not even including the obvious complaint many others have made about the sub-par art and animation when Tower of God is largely an action story.

@Avamarie316 the games don't typically bother me in the manwha, there may have been one or two that felt contrived, but in general, they are well explained, and make a lot of sense. for example, in the manwha with bam vs love, you really feel the power difference, and that if they were to have a proper fight, it wouldn't even be close, love would destroy bam in an instant. so it made a lot of sense to have a game instead, but in the anime that whole setup just fell flat. same for a lot of the other games, there's just a lack of explaination

@Pholaresense I mean, there's other shows that I've watched with poor animation where the story has been good enough that it didn't really matter how bad the animation was. and it's not like the art in tog was very good at the start. if it was just the animation that was bad, it would be dissapointing, because the fights do feel really flat and underwhelming, poorly directed, etc, but there's so much more that's wrong with the show

Elaborate, please.

We need to discuss everything that's wrong.

Man, I keep imagining how much I would’ve enjoyed this if A1 were at the helm...

@Ri-iel I’m saying A1 because of Solo Leveling. It’s a more fair comparison imo

I am an anime-only, but I consider reading ToG manhwa more and more every week.
The season 1 was so special with this animation and characters were not flat as it stands now. I love the curiosity and mystery behind this world presented in season one. The second season feels so hollow and rushed, the animation is also too simple and looks bad imo.
I do really want to hope that the second cour will be better, but I don't think so :(

I'm still waiting for the "they are just saving budget for upcoming fights" moment like the glazers keep telling ;d Like bruh, it's been almost 12 episodes and nothing got better in any way, it's time for the glazers to stop coping and being delusional.

I agree with all points here. Also, the new characters really are not interesting at all.

The manwha has always been extremely overhyped, it's basically we want one piece but we have one piece at home = tower of god, bad animation never kills a series, it diminishes it sure, but ive seen series with worse animation being way more popular and talked about.

Bad directing, bad pacing, bad visuals across the board can really ruin even the best of stories. Especially in a season where it was such a dramatic shift from the first one story-wise and cast-wise too, which needs a more delicate handling of the transition.

I've only seen the anime and am enjoying it. But looking at all these posts makes me think I'm missing out something even better by not reading the manwha.
