English translation: I worked on the second episode of Blue Lock and I'll tell you why it's animation was so bad. Months ago I started working on the second season of Blue Lock. One in which I would work not only on 1 episode nor 2 or 3 but rather 5 episodes. I started working on the second episode in which I had to take care of 20 cuts basically animating the scenes from 0. Basically layout. But curiously the problems hadn't started at this point. I'm sure that not only I but rather all the animators that worked on this episode didn't do the job that ended up being published. Despite the low pay and negligible time, we did the best we could. There were many of my animations that were capadas* in their final version. Basically they eliminated all the movement, some frames or they just made them differently. But the fault doesn't lie in the one that came after me since they probably did all they could with the little time they had. These problems just like in JJK in the past or in the vast majority of animes are a result of the production committee of certain animes that take projects simply thinking about the money and not the condition of it's workers. And it's because of this that I didn't worked on any other episode of Blue Lock. Once I finished working on the second episode I decided to get out and just like I thought the final result ended up being a disaster. This made me feel like this is a job that I'm not proud to upload. I got permission to publish one of my 22 cuts.

: I got no clue what capadas can be translated to. I didn't wanted to localize the term either since I don't know much about animation so I didn't wanted to misinform people. I guess a localization could be capped

Also Martin said that his original plan was working on 5 episodes but after seeing the state of the production he bowed out after working on just Episode 2.

It’s generally never the animators fault. It’s of course the directors. Way to ruin what could have been a fantastic adaptation.

Basically the director cut frames of animation from the anime to meet deadlines. Essentially they rushed the anime and got rid of what could have been fluid motion. Instead we got even worse PowerPoints then Season 1.

This explains why there are no animation in the episodes. The director should have just let the episodes be 30 minutes long at this point and not cut anything. Like either the studio delays the product or release the episode not directed lol.

Thankfully there are animation studios that don’t fall into this category like Cloverworks recently, Ufoatable, Madhouse and ofcourse kyoto. Seems whitefox is fixing its way also. MAPPA and rest can go and lose the big animators because wow their work environment just sucks. Why would you ruin one of the best arcs in sports manga? The sales of manga were so great and reception of season 1 was overall good. Yet this is the end result. All I can express is how mad and disappointed I am. Well hope another studio can take whatever remains and adapt it because 8bits doesn’t deserve this anime.

@Confused_100 Bro I don't know why you mentioned Madhouse which had many problems precisely because it overloaded the animators, many even ended up in hospital due to too much work.

yeah the weird thing to me, unlike western shows, is I understand they animate week-to-week which sounds AWFUL

like as if you wouldn’t have a product finished at top quality then release it??? imagine trying to do the whole CGI for a marvel movie within a few weeks haha. there’s a reason those kind of movies (and series like stranger things) take time

if every ep of blue lock had animation like S1 E1 it’d be ridiculous

with that all being said i’m still loving this season XD might switch to the manga tho after TBC

So I have a question. They said they started on it a few months ago. Wasn’t season 2 confirmed like a week after season one ended? Why didn’t they start soon after that. I mean I don’t know much about making a anime but I would assume more time you’re given the better the product. I know the Nagi episode (which was basically a movie) came out in like June of this year. So at the bare minimum the animators only had from May to work on it, but I would assume they got done with that at least few months in advance maybe in march so the advertising team can advertise the movie. And that “episode” is basically nothing more than advertising for season two of the anime. My question is why would they make nagi a full hour and a half long when they haven’t even worked on the show yet? Couldn’t they just make it like a full 30 minute episode. It all really just feels like bad planning that lead to the situation in the first place.

@DragonXreeper It's not that they don't want to, but it's very likely that they're too busy doing other anime projects, since the studio also needs to animate other shows.

I mean, between the 1st season and 2nd season of Blue Lock, the studio worked on more than 10 shows, including popular ones like Tensura, Yuru Camp, and Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei, on top of Bamco's Synduality project, and both seasons of Shy, so it's only a matter of time before they stumble into quality problems due to burnout.

This is basically anime industry's biggest problem since 15 years ago, where there are way too many shows that anime studios needs to produce every season, but the studios can't keep up with the production, hence they outsourced lots of stuffs to animation studios outside Japan, while they overworked the animator literally to death, which resulted in the lower quality (currently, we have like 40+ shows being aired every season, which like double the amount from 20 years ago).

I doubt this situation will change any time soon, because the demand for anime is always extremely high, and companies don't want to let all those money left on the table, to the point that they didn't give a shit about the studios were suffered heavily with insane crunch and toxic environment.

Yup, this is the article. Earlier this day (24 October) I watched a YouTube videos talking about this matters. I really makes me sad about blue lock (my favorite sport anime) and anime industry right now. If the production isn't done yet so don't force it to be published dawg. I believe everybody else will get it if anime got 1 week delayed. We'll all rather get a delayed anime rather than animation like this

Tldr, insane work load + unrealistic time schedule (cuz they wanna push the series annually) + lack of staffs/ animators .

But 8 bit is known for its cut corner + rushed production so not surprising. Don't expect much from 8bit.

its either that, or do what MAPPA did with the animators on JJK 2. Make them sign an NDA and have them work their asses off like robots.
Wonder how many hours a week did the animators have off time to relax.

@V1P3R0P Tbh this is actually a norm in Japan anime industry. Most of the big company are like that, be it UFO/ Mappa. Even Kyo Anime was like that.
The difference being these big brand studios usually have talented director/ animators to carry through the project.
8 bit doesn't seem to have that, plus less animators working on this project which make the issue worse. Tbh none of the 8bit projects ever blow my mind a single time when I watch them.

Anime production needs a complete overhaul because there's no acceptable reason for this kind of shit to ever happen, to any show. It's a shame that we as the consumer get slop thrown at us because the suits that don't do any of the actual work are only thinking about their bank accounts.

@TheSekiryuutei nah too much delay is not good too remember uzumaki is delayed for years but look at how it turns out

more delays means more salaries needed daily so budget will need to be bigger which is not the case in most anime productions

anime production also should follow the goldilocks principle

@thebrentinator24 Worst part being even if the anime is omega successful, the animators actually don't get paid more whatsoever.
All the profit goes to the company's higher up/ publishers/investors/ anime committee
Because of this, even if an anime production turns out to be dog shit, animators don't get paid less too. That's why you can see such huge disparity between each anime projects. There's simply no incentive for good anime production outside of animators' own passion / hard work/ dedication.

What I don’t understand is how j.c staff is making 8 anime while 8-bit is only making 1 anime this season. Rn Jc staff anime airing this season look ten times better than this. I get JC staff has like 198 people compare 8 bit 68 employees. Jc staff is split 198/8=24(estimate) for regular jc staff employee (this not including outsource it to freelance animators) working on each anime, somehow each one of them look better than blue lock season 2, with its still key art shots that look like taking page form the manga and coloring it and then putting into after affects. 8-bit currently 68 employees that more than enough people for 1 anime. What I think is that 8-bit has bad planning, they should’ve release blue u-20 in January bc they just did slime season 4 and should give the animator a-least 3 months of preproduction before actually airing it on television. Or delaying the release until November, it give animator time work ep1-3. Keeping a 2 ep lead on actual tv release, can fix this rushing and bad animation.

8bit does not decide the planning and schedule for this season. Even though they are art of the committee, they rank incredibly low and are overtaken by several others, in particular Bandai Namco Filmworks and Kodansha. Bandai also leads the production for Slime, and they've acquired 8bit as a subsidiary this year.

So it's ultimately their fault for terrible planning and shoving projects on top of them.

If you can't WATCH 20 minutes of anime because it's "exhausting to watch" I really can't fathom how can you possibly want to weight on any discussion on the production of anime. This shit is incredibly complex with dozens and dozens of stakeholders and more than 100 people direclty or indirectly involved.

You people have problably never felt the pressure of doing something for TV. There simply is no choice but deliver. It's hell itself.

I wonder how many of you at least have like, a job? With stakes and responsabilities and stuff like that. Or are you just that shitty and unemphatetic and just want to vent because the cartoon you wanted to watch looks bad.

@Oongbuh Thanks for your correction. It true that 8-bit is relatively small animation committee and Bandai Namco Filmwork has ultimate the say. Honesty it the producer at bandai namco fault, the producer should've known that releasing such a big project (blue lock 2) right after release Slime season 4 was bad idea. Since blue lock has such detailed character design, it would be hard for animators at 8-bit to adapt the whole u-20 match with out cutting corner (consider 1 of the best sport arc in manga history), considering it popularity they should've plan the production 6 months in advance to give animator time. Unlike, jjk 2 which is highly acclaim for production issue at mappa. The reason why jjk was able to make somewhat good adaptation with terrible time constraints was due there character design being less detail during fight/action shots and hidden line works cover by the the dark eniviroment. Blue lock 2 was the opposite they focus on the character design over the action sequences resulting in slide show since the animator had to focus so much character design, if they would've make the character less detailed (dont include shadows, close up shots to hide character design) it would've save time on character design and give the animators time on the action sequences.
