It's decided! We're doing an "Anime of the Month"!

The first feature has already been chosen by the staff, and the official announcement will go out later this week on the 26th. =D thanks to everyone who voted!

I'm curious whether or not our members would like to participate in a featured anime of the month?

Basically, a movie, OVA, or series from 1985 (or from the 80's in general) would be selected, as many members as possible would watch it in the space of a month (or shorter, or longer), and then we would discuss it here. The purpose would be to introduce us to all the great anime that was made around the time we were born and to create a common topic of discussion!

Of course, we would make sure that an English-subtitled version is readily available of whatever is chosen, and the club officers would try and provide direct-download links as well as torrents (and perhaps also streaming when available), for those who need them.

Anyways, vote and post your comments letting me know! Nothing is set in stone at this point so feel free to suggest a better time frame (maybe 2 weeks would be better, or 2 months) or if you think we should expand beyond anime maybe? Some great films and TV shows came out in 1985 too. We might run out of anime so that's also an option.

Also, if anyone would like to be directly involved in organizing this event (choosing the feature, leading the discussion topic, providing direct downloads and seeding torrents, etc) please let me know! There's probably a club officer position in it for you! But just suggestions for the feature are always welcome, no strings attached. ;)

Viva 1985!

I wouldn't mind trying it. It might be a bit of a trouble to find and provide such anime though..

Well, here's to the poll results.

Well, there are a few from 1985 that are readily available. That's what I was saying we could expand outwards from 1985. Or do more than just anime. XD

sounds fun and all, missing a lot from the 80s. only problem is how are we going to mass distribute it. not exactly an easy task. but if we could even stream it i'd be up for it

We've been talking about it a bit, and we'll probably do anime from the 80's in general, not just '85.

As for distribution, we'll be using torrents primarily, and also direct downloads where possible.

Irc savy people should go on ahead and download the series beforehand after agreeing with admin on which fansub group to get them from. I then suggest these people hold onto the files in their HDD and help seed them via torrents for the club. Ideally with this system the torrent seed pool will be large enough to enable a fast dl for everyone.

In retrospect

should be the first line of call.

lol. I live in a world fueled by torrents. DDL have always come second or third for me, so they're never the first thing I go for.

try irc for the super fast bot dowload experience (usually 50kb-200kb/sec) :D

I've used irc before too. But usually only when it's an older episode with an unseeded torrent or if it's something released on irc first and I'm feeling impatient. XD I've grabbed from bots and fservs both. I'm a leeching expert, after all! Heh.

I get, on average 200-220 kb/sec on a good torrent (My speed is capped for some unknown reason). New fansubbed episodes always give me that speed! XD

DDL's via stuff like MegaUpload, SendSpace, etc are what annoy me, because the speeds are low and variable, and they're not sustainable. Theoretically you could find seeded torrents from 2001 (the year BT was first introduced), assuming that the tracker still exists. XD I like the semi-permanence of torrents, so they're my first choice for p2p file-sharing.

my torrents are usually 5kbs-10kbs.... maybe is the fact i get obscure things like Jacques Cousteau's Documentary xD
ah i put steaming and ddl in the same category so sorry for the confusion.

Ah. For me, streaming and direct downloads are something different. Streaming is the b*stard child of the file-sharing family. Because of the low-quality, and the way people will upload files to streaming sites without permission from the original uploader/creator of the file, and not even giving proper credit either. It's really annoying, although not as bad as when idiots sell fansubs on eBay. >_<

On the other hand, direct downloads can have the same level of quality, at least, and they have some benefit. Some people simply can't use torrents because they're blocked by their ISP or network.

Of course, I tend to get very angry and irritated at people who won't use torrents because they're too lazy to figure out how to configure their firewall/router properly and to use a decent torrent program. Impatience is a big problem with anti-torrenters as well. It gets bad when people start pushing for DDL's because they can't wait a week, a few days, or even a few hours for a file to finish. I'm sometimes too patient for my own good.

So yeah, I love torrents! XD I've just gotten really intuitive about using them. XD But I'm pretty open, so that's why for the Anime of the Month I would try to offer multiple options. If it's a movie or a short OVA, I'd be more than happy to make DDL's myself. But I won't do streaming unless I can find it from somewhere else.

If we do an entire series, torrents and irc will be the only way to go. =/

I have to agree, I stay away from streaming if at all possible. About the only thing I use it for is Mythbusters and old Beetlejuice cartoons. I tried IRC once when I was looking for season 1 and 2 of Digimon, but never really figured it out.

Torrent is the way to go for me. I'd say I've been torrenting at least one thing consistently for the past three years... kind of sad.

I'd also prefer torrents. I'm too stupid for IRC. °_° (or too lazy to actually learn this stuff)

It's also good to have 80's anime in general, cause if it was only 85 we'd run out quick, cause even if there where some anime, only a small percentage are subbed.

general 80's is most likely the route we'll take just because most anime of 85 is very obscure or impossible to find. Ah, I see you're a Valkyrie fan, good job :)
