Receiving Kamo's report that the Aizu Domain has officially entrusted them with this task, Keisuke Yamanami asks the Miburo members in Kyoto, where the storm of imperial loyalty and anti-foreigner sentiment rages if they prepared to risk their lives in this fight.

I'd prefer that Miburo staying independent, but at that time staying independent means Ronin which was viewed as second-rate warriors, they want to be the first rate. It also makes sense financially and legally too.

The Miburo have been employed by the head of Kyoto. Now they're not just a wandering band of swordman they have a purpose in Kyoto. This is definitely an exciting moment for them to be commissioned like this with such a task. Kyoto is an unruly city at this time with much going on in its underbelly. The Miburo have their work cut out for them trying to keep it safe. The meeting with the official employing them was pretty funny. The speech written on the hands then all of them exclaiming what their dreams are. Very funny and lots of camaraderie among them all. The kids waiting outside running into another kid. A very peculiar guy with some dangerous ideas about Kyoto. With the three young members of the Miburo actually being from Kyoto this kid Seto feels some kinship towards them. Them going to see him later got very creepy with him talking about expelling all the outsiders from Kyoto when the Miburo. This guy is dangerous and unsettling. Nio and Hajime are smart to keep their guard up

I can see why the Miburo are making moves to avoid being Ronin as surely it would make more financial sense to take jobs that ensure their survival.

That guy from the final was a badass, but Hajime and Nio won’t have any troubles beating him up.

Serizawa Kamo holds the supremacy, but everything in Kyoto is not going well.

The blonde kid is suspect. I bet he had the killer come on them.

Good to see the narrative's moving along nicely. But there was a noticeable drop in production values this episode.

The Aizu Domain receiving unsatisfactory reports about their own kin being killed, the Miburo can only be called upon to settle the matter.

Serizawa coming in with a satisfactory face, and the time has come for the Miburo to be activated to assist the Aizu Domain. But Kyoto being still in a sonno joi settlement, this is exactly the problem, because while the Aizu is pro-Shogun, the Choshu is anti-Shogun, and will do anything to reel supporters against the Emperor. This is a tall order, but the Miburo are all united together to defend thier homeland, regardless of the jobs they get.

The 3 wolves of Mibu staying in the compound instead, to find the blonde-haired Seto hititng up for a conversation, this is striking as of yet. But the fact that Kondo's enthusiastic speech to the current Lord of Matsudaira Katamori is hilariously scripted on hand, that still gains the trust of Katamori wishing the same, at least they have the camaraderie of men altogether to request hunting down the 5 Devils who gushed out the Aizu samurai's eyes for "being blind" to Heaven's justice. Nio making a trip to see Seto to gain information on the matter, him suggesting to rid Kyoto of every "stain" in the city, is suspicious enough that Hajime already knew, and Nio's confirmation that he at least can negotiate with him further.

Both Hajime and Nio knowing they've invited trouble to their hands, it's not easy to evade being targeted and killed.

Aizu Domain's finest are being targeted, thus they've chosen the Miburo for defence. Serizawa can't be in a better mood. They're worried what the people in Kyoto will think but the Nio, being a local, assures them they're well-liked.

Yamanami explains the term Sonnou Joi to Nio. While it might be true most people in Japan would support "revering the emperor" and "keeping the foreigners" out, different factions, both pro-Shogunate like Aizu and anti-Shogunate like Choshu have different conceptions of what those mean, too. According to Yamanami, it's their view that has the strongest influence in Kyoto.

They visit Matsudaira Katamori, the Commissioner of Kyoto and Aizu. If this is really 1863 then Saitou Hajime should be about 19 years old, and Okita Souji, 21 at most, yet Saitou is lumped with Nio and Tarou.
They're all curious about Seto's foreign appearance but Nio's look is inconspicuous. Anyway, there is something off about him and his retainer.
The room is tense and Kondo breaks into a speech (Serizawa spots the cheatsheet on his hand lol).
Assassin's kill in the name of "heaven's justice"? Interesting.
Matsudaira Katamori breaks the ice by telling his guests to just say what they really want to do.
"Are you Aizu dogs blind? The five of us will see heaven's justice done." There were four Hitokiri during the Bakumatsu in real life, are four of the five them and one is a copycat killer?
Does Seto resent his English mother or something, what's his goal?
Nio and Saitou are targeted by swordsman with an umbrella on their way back from Seto's.

Seta, that blond kid is suspicious. He looks like as if he knows more details but there's some kind of motive behind what he does.

For the time being Hajime and Nio are able to get along, even if not perfectly.

Yay! Story is advancing. I wonder if the blonde kid (I think his name is Seto) will be an actual ally. The animation is not great. I like now knowing why on earth the goals of the Miburo are so important to the story, and I am happy that they finally have some stability in the region. The swordsman with an umbrella at night time was a dodgy detail I liked a little too much.
