I literally started watching this last night on Netflix, on an anime binge because K-Dramas have been kinda crap lately and I myself have sort of been in an anime abstinence for the past decade, despite all that I remember this show being talked about in passing quite a bit.

It's definitely not what I expected, I was thinking it was going to be like a super serious Isekai but the series is kinda more akin to KonoSuba and not as funny so far, only seen 7 episodes.

Like the MC is delulu but he's also self-aware of it and is currently just justifying the actions of the girls of Shadow Garden are there to let him continue his hilarious fantasy and are somewhat taking pity on him rather than being a serious group who are loyal to him.

I have this feeling that the MC is unwittingly a personification of God or has a God-like power who's able to speak things into existence such as the Cult of Diablos and stuff. Despite all that, even if he's putting up his rather delulu persona, he is still killing people.

Just a weird show but I'm enjoying it thus far.

Well, this anime is on whole different level Isekai if you notice that he is the only one in the anime who surpassed all human limits in his world. Not only that his knowledge about his world not mere crap, he knows everything about Japan & other countries setting how they rule/work. He learnt those things to become The Eminence In Shadow, sacrificed everything. In first and later eps there were some inner thoughts to explore. He was so opressive about power and being in shadow. Example, you want to become something and pursue till the end etc.

So, you should not call him chunni. as chunni. thinks that they have powers which is not real but it's different for this Isekai. Though, his story about cult becomes true, it can be considered as luck (side character luck).

About killing part, it's a dark fantasy which usually follows gore/horror things. But I did not show him killing any innocent except kingdom soldiers and cult members.

@nhiudv I don't mind the killing but it's more like he doesn't seem to register how brutal he is as if everything in front of him that are an opposition are just mobs in a game. I simply wouldn't care if I killed mobs in a game but in real life it would be a different story, then again in his previous life he was kinda like being the Red Hood or just Batman from Arkham Asylum.

As expected of an immature watcher jumping into the conclusion without knowing almost nothing. If you have already seen chuunibyou you must know that mc was just straight up delulu but here shadow/minoru kagenou was doing something towards his goal/aspiration (training body, learning study materials, piano etc). So in short your take is ded wrong...also both manga and anime skipped some important details like why demi humans are large in number as possessed and stuff (idk about wn/ln but I did played that game by crunchyroll and in-game story explained that stuff surprisingly)

Maybe you should try actually taking animes seriously, and not watch them in 2x speed

The girls in Shadow Garden are serious, and are incredibly (if not absolutely) loyal to him, and absolutely NOT pitying him. that's just like pitying a mafia boss for having to disguise himself from the public.

and also, comparing Cid to Konosuba and Chuunibyou is like comparing a nuke and a newborn baby

He is a male chuuni but both series are very different

- Chuunibiyou is a romcom with 0 fighting
That is a darker shounen full of combat.

- Cid has a harem
Chuuni male Mc does not. His other romantic interest gives up.

-Chuunibiyou has 0 actual powers. That is imagination.
Cid has cheat isekai power.

Chuunibiyou is about growing up and changing ,(and some male fantasy romance). Kage no is an escapist power fantasy.

I realize my general rating is one of my most divisive scores. If you like it I would never stop someone from enjoying it.

Cid isn't really a chuuni, before reincarnating he always knew he doesn't have powers and he is very limited, but still he didn't just fantasize about being strong or having super powers, he dedicated his entire life to becoming as strong as he could in any way available, to achieve his goal, my man was fighting gangsters at night like batman for training, trained enough to defeat a military soldier, there was even a scene of him talking about how powerless he is and he wouldn't win against guns or a military squad. he's realistic and not a chuuni, he's just dense and doesn't realize that the things he said are true, and miss interpret them.

We know that the story seems like weird. But some plots are really interesting. His entry in the fight as a side character to main character. From my side i don’t think it’s a good story but the some moments in anime is the best.

This thread is a classic case where people read just one sentence and run with it whilst also being rude about it, that is the most childish thing I've seen here or anything.

He's very much delulu, to get that strong and do that kind of training, you have to have a screw loose up there and I stick by it and his feats aren't illusions of grandeur but are backed up by all the training he has done in both lives.

He's like an evolved version of a Chunni who succeeded in actually attaining the powers he covets.

However, like I said in my original post, I think he has a power to speak things into truth and reality, such as the Cult of Diablos, he himself ad-libbed and admits to it right after doing so and he himself believes that the girls were playing along with him at first, you see that when they said they were leaving him when he was 13 years old, he assumed that they wanted to stop playing along but in reality that was never the case, they are loyal to him because he has saved them and showed them miracles, he is their saviour.

I finished season 1 a few days back and season 2 yesterday, I liked it but it's pretty much a comedy with a tonne of references to other animes and in particular Code Geass, like the small TV showing a bit of Mordeth (or whatever he was called, the Knight of Beyond) and not revealing his face in that video transmission. I mean Lulu's original seiyuu actually voices John Smith and John Smith's getup and in particular the eye mask reminds me of Code Geass as well, I think Suzaku had that but I'm not 100% sure. Plus Shadow's entire getup is very similar to Lulu's Zero persona.

As for calling it a dark fantasy, I don't think it's that dark, the tone is more akin to KonoSuba as everything is pretty much a joke with action scenes. I don't walk away thinking of this series is like something that is super dark but I walk away from this series thinking of how much a parody it is like Nishino feels like a character from the Monogatari series.

@Maou_Sama_No1 I think you only bothered to read one sentence of my post before deciding to just write your take, I think that is rather immature.

Plus, this anime is pretty much a comedy that heavily relies on parody.

@Midio7 So the take that Cid potentially has the powers to speak things into truth and reality, is a trash take? Okay, I'm surprised that so many ppl are getting butthurt that I dared compared Cid to a Chunni character because he obsesses over becoming the "Eminence in the Shadow", a childhood dream that he has clung onto in 2 different lives.

@Aerriss First off, I'm old school, I don't fucking watch anime in 2x speed and I never FUCKING will, the fact that you're suggesting it probably means you've done so.

As for taking this anime seriously, are you being real? This anime is an action comedy that heavily relies on parodies and tropes.

In my original post if you actually read it properly, I do say that the girls are actually serious about him (you actually made me re-read what I wrote and it's clear as day you've misunderstood what I wrote), however, Cid thought they were playing along with him (at least in the beginning) and that is evident when he is 13 years old and the girls say they're leaving, he's thinking that they want to stop playing along and get on with their lives but in actuality, they want to create a better organisation for him and investigate the Cult.

I made the post after watching a few episodes of the show but now that I have caught up and watched both seasons, this anime is very much like KonoSuba in the sense that is a comedy isekai but in my opinion isn't as funny.

@AoiYurei When I was watching it, at first all I could think was that he was like a Chunni in that he goes out of his way to become the "Eminence in the Shadow" but as you said, he goes out of his way to try to achieve his goals as he beliefs allow him to, in that if he is able to forsake all unnecessary things and dedicate himself to training, he can get one step close to being the "Eminence in the Shadow".

He's definitely someone with a screw loose in that he became so determined to fulfil his dream, that he literally became a walking nuke.

It's kinda funny that I just came across this but the author of the series says Cid has Chunnibyou tendencies in that he is unable to discern his delusions from reality. That point kinda strikes a chord a little bit different for me as now I'm wondering how much of the anime is "true" and how much of it was an illusion or delusion from the perspective of Cid. For the time being, I'm taking this series as a light-hearted comedy with spinkles of darkness (personally I don't think there's that much imo).

I look forward to the movie, which I assume Cid goes to his original world or a parallel version of his original world but will go back to the world where Shadow Garden exists by the end of the movie, which probably means we won't get much Nishino after this movie.
