I just now completed the show, and I had some doubts about a few things which was mostly cleared after reading the other posts. But the one thing I don't understand fully is the sudden friendship of Marina and Shizuka at the end. Like, in the last timeline, Marina was just bullying Shizuka and then she saw some doodle which kinda resembled Takopi, and as she had a few memories of Takopi, so she became Shizuka's best friend??? Because they were both lonely, but if that was the case then, why didn't they become friends before that. And what about the second (where Takopi met Shizuka) timeline? According to that logic, shouldn't Shizuka have some memories of Takopi even then? And why didn't she become her friend then? If we're taking the case they became friends because Takopi did not interfere in this timeline, then what about the first (takopi met Marina) timeline, even in that, Takopi did not interfere during elementary school time period.
I'm just having a hard time understanding the fact they became friends just because of that doodle of Takopi, whom they barely remembered.

If anyone have more explanation in this matter, please share them here

man, it's kind of "simple", they two remembered Takopi at the same time somehow, when the two were fighting alone. That's why the friendship.

Marina recognised Shizuka's scribbles and both realised, that Takopi was in fact real, just like everything that happened. They started talking, then conversing. This forged a bond between them and the two became friends.
This is the overall message of the series. You need to talk to eachother and solve issues in civil manner.

Even seemingly insignificant events can lead to entirely different outcomes (see butterfly effect) and this doesn't necessarily need to be comprehensible.

The author wanted "friendship over enemyship" to be the final moral of the story, and made it happen by Marina and Shizuka finding common ground.

I think the scribble gave them something to talk about. For the first time they shared a dialogue between each other. Marina saw her as an insect and Shizuka saw her as some monster. But they talked to each other, turns out they are not that different. Which helped them forge a bond.

With the message of the series being no matter how bad things are, dialogue might be able to make them better. If you talk to other people about your problems, you might find things in common to bond over and share the pain. Even if things don't get better, at least you have someone to share them with.

That's how I interpreted it.

I don't think both of them have memories of the past but they do seem to have some flashes of the past, especially the incompetence of Takopi.

You summarized that well! Exactly what I thought too

Honesetly i just put it down to a bad ending

While it's not impossible for Shizuka and Marina to find some form of common ground and understanding of eachother's situations, i think the way Takopi presents it is too sudden and drastic

They bonded over pain. They didn't remember shit, like some are claiming, what remains are the feelings they had, what they felt with Takopi, they didn't remember him. They share the same pain of losing him, but they don't really know what it is about.

It’s a cheap ending that tries to redeem the authors desire to tell a story about trauma in children. It’s themes are very sound, speaking of love and communication as things that we all desire and need. But the way it gets there is nauseating. The only way it could achieve this end is through time travel and no real development between these two hurt children. It is a cheap answer to a profound question, which is worth asking. And I think that’s why it falls flat for so many reasons. I’m curious as to if it is the same ending as the manga.

It felt overly simplistic to me. After showing such heavy trauma, neglect, and bullying throughout the series, their sudden bond seems unconvincing. It almost feels like the writers wanted to wrap up the characters’ deep wounds with a quick scene, which reduces the emotional weight. A story this serious would have benefited from a more gradual and nuanced resolution.

Yeah that's the point of the show lol.
Takopi didn't do a thing for Shizuka's happiness but at the same time he did it all after giving his life to her and being the bond between both girls who have nothing in common for being friends until that single thing.

yeah just what takopi said, his original sin was not talking and happiness is built through talking, they didn't really become friends instantly but marina stopped bullying her and they both became friendly slowly

Imo, both time line went sideways, hard, and it left a mark. They don't have full memories of what happened, but they have a sweet sorrow spot left linked to the octopus. When marina sees it, it both "reminds" her of where that path leads, and has her understand her similarity to the other girl - that likely went through the same destructive path as her, especially since they start reminiscing about the octopus.

It's a bullshit ending.
We should know how the bully atoned for what she did to the victim. She never shows any sign of remorse. Fucking stupid.
