If anyone's going to the shops, just pick me up a few packets of tissues.
Not a perfect adaptation or the best use of 26 episodes, but there was a really good story once you cut away a lot of excess fat.

@Shadowx99 While I agree to an extent that Summer Pockets is more or less a "dumbed down" version of Clannad (and Air), it's important to clarify that it's not by the same author, only the same company. Jun Maeda had nothing to do with its writing
@FlorDeAndromeda
thanks for the clarification..I just searched it up and apparently he only contributed to the music and the core concept..which ig is fair..the music is nice and the core idea is good and could've been amazing..but unfortunately whoever wrote the story excuted it in the worst way possible..

Honestly if anything this does make it worse bruh..like bro didn't only write a bad story..bro copied from a masterpiece and somehow made it a show that is probably ending up in most people top 10 worst shows they ever watched(and iam the first to do that🫣)

Adaptation-wise, it is better than Little Busters.

Although they cut down some good content such as some parts of Ao's route, Shiroha's route, and the bonding between the boys.

🟡🟡🟡🟡🟡END🟡🟡🟡🟡🟡absolute cinema😭 True ending of Umi finally got what she wanted, which was to meet Hairi and Shiroha in the past countless times and move on from the past with a bittersweet farewell ending typical of Studio Key 😭❤️⭕️For those who don't understand, just read the visual novel Summer Pockets, it's highly recommended and there are many heroine routes that aren't adapted⭕️By the way, this source pocket is the comeback anime of Studio Key, which hasn't made an anime in a long time, hopefully in the future Studio Key will make another anime😭❤️ I give this anime a rating of 7.9 /10❤️

The anime definitely needed 48 episodes.

Clannad is Key's only 'animated masterpiece' precisely because it has two cours of 24 episodes.

It's essential to have all the slice-of-life routes to connect with the characters and immerse yourself in the universe. Everything felt empty and distant in this adaptation.

Of Key's anime, it wouldn't get an 8.

Clannad: 9.5/10
Kanon 2006: 8/10
Little Busters: 8/10
Air: 8/10
Planetarian: 7.5/10
Charlotte: 7/10
Angel Beats: 7/10
Summer Pockets: 7/10
Kamisama ni Natta Hi: 6/5/10
Rewrite: 6/10
Prima Doll: 5/10
Kanon Toei: 5/10

Angel Beats reference 🥺🥹🥹 Not the ending I am expecting for but at least, they are still bound to be together at end right? ☹️🥹 Finally, 6 months memories fill in the pocket coming to an end. Cannot compete with Angel Beats, Clannad, and Little Busters but this series really meets our expectation. Happy ending and extremely happy to see them both. This series deserves at minimum of 7.5-8 rating since not many makes plot like this anymore now. We really need more of these in the future!

well that wasn't the ending i expected. it started off with scenes that frankly made me go... ''ok WTF happened to the continuation from the finale of Ep25 and how did we get 'here' from 'there'?'' but it's Key, they write weird azz stuff every time... at least their anime adaptations have turned out weird every one i've watched. so i'm just extrapolating that Key writes weird stuff.

every gal gets a mostly happy ending INCLUDING store-room chan! she finally got cleaned up and organized! in the last episode! after being ignored for 25 eps! :O *applause!*

i guess Umi-chan is the only gal who doesn't get a warm n fuffy. but at least her dad dove off the ferry headin home to proposition her mom for some cooking lessons. that's got to be the lamest pickup line i've ever encountered in my 49 years on Earth. total stranger danger rando dude she saw maybe twice in that Summer. who ate her dish at the diner. that she only knows as 'the guy staying at Gramma's house' ... clambers outta the ocean and sopping wet asks for fried rice cooking lessons. yeahhhh normal girl says? "POLICE! POLICE! HELLP! HELLP! SOMEBODY! A WEIRDO IS ASKING ME STRANGE QUESTIONS!!!!" annnd runs away as fast as she can. :/

ah well, it was an interesting show. :)

Well this was disappointing.
It was a solid 8 up until Kamome's last episode. From there, it went downhill albeit slowly.
Tsumugi's was heavily rushed, Ao's was mediocre, Shiroha's was "eh", though ALKA was good up until the last episode.
Pockets was just okay.

It's just not emotional compared to reading the original novel. There just wasn't enough impact at all.
This is the biggest problem I had with this adaptation.
Overall, I would give it a 6/10. For reference, I gave the original a 9.5/10.

Truly the Summer Pockets are the memories we made along the way.

Umi-chan fulfilled her mission, in exchange of her existence. Key never fails to deliver a bittersweet ending, I like it and at the same time I hate it. At least Umi-chan was able to experience a fun endless summer.

And now it's a start of another boy-meets-girl story!

The real good ending is I got to see Kamome again.

@Tennouji

Yeah, I also think they did a better job than LB, which also had 39 episodes to tell its story. While here only 26.

I also think Summer Pockets is better than Air, which I found a bit too confusing, and on the same level as Angel Beats. Clannad is probably better, but well, with 48 episodes and Kyoani... but even in Clannad, some routes and characters are far from memorable.

@TheColonel76 The Summer Pocket games (the og and reflection blue) happen to be on sale right now if you're interested, although the Reflection Blue discount is not amazing (but they're giving away steam keys on their socials so maybe you can get it for free if you're really lucky who knows).
In any case, glad to see some anime-only viewers like you really enjoyed the ride :)
@MeguSae38 Thanks for the info, I might go ahead and snag it then. And I’m glad that you’re glad that I enjoyed the show lol

Dang what, Umi is gon?? Shiroha wasn't able to give her a farewell rip. We get to see the rest of the picture book story too. Misaki basically explain Summer Pockets literally lol, there was a summer in Hairi's pocket that he recalled o:, Shiroha had that moment too ig. Hairi did finally get to clean the shed, and at least he was able to say one last thing to Umi too, though we don't know what he said (maybe). This loop/timeline was sure different, Hairi didn't really interact with anyone but felt it in his soul to come back and talk to Shiroha. Bro really jumped off the boat lol, them together is def a canon event. Though oof end, it is both happy and sadge. Does feel like a Summer Pockets end. Can't have a good happy ending where the three can live together in the future rip.

Never ending plan to watch list...

Bittersweet ending for Umi-chan. It was all about her after all...
It's not a competition between the best girlfriend routes, but...

This was... on of the best episodes of my life.

I feared they'll fail it knowing the massacre that were the initial routes, but they successfully caught the emotion again. I lived again one of my favorite moment of fiction of all time. I cried all my tears for a second time. Thank you so much...

Goodbye Umi, we'll miss you so much 😭😭😭😭😭

I have mixed feelings over the finale and one of those feelings is that this felt incomplete. While the ending was decent I was disappointed that Umi did not seem to have a future but having said that since Hairi did jump from the boat at the end to talk to Shiroha I think there's a chance that they may end up getting together anyways and Shiroha could become pregnant. I'm not sure if that possibility could (or will) be revisited but it's a thought I had at the end there. Also, it's weird that Hairi has memories of Umi but since she supposedly won't be born how does that make sense? That rhetorical question is a reason why I think that Umi could still be reborn.

Anyways, I was going to give this an '8' but because this didn't feel like a conclusive ending I'm giving it a '7' since it was still a good watch.

lol no second season? At least the title was finally explained.

The character design was adorable in this show, story was ok, the first arcs were fun.
but they tried too hard insert a lot of plot into the Shiroha story.

Shiroha's multiple loops throw me out of the story unfortunately,
I really loved the playing family thing, it was so sweet.
The drama afterwards was a bit hard to stomach, it's supposed to make you cry but that went too far.
Shiroha had too many episodes and the story about her was awkward and hard to understand as a whole.

Still would consider that as positive experience since it's very cute.

@Fabienne There is no second season but there is a possible new route for a new girl that will be adapted most likely as an OVA or a movie.

It feels meta that this show had so much to say about nostalgia when the real reason I watched it was nostalgia. This very much has the same feel as the Key anime I watched as a kid, and that's both what kept me watching and what disappointed. Because I think I would have been genuinely impressed watching this all those years ago instead of Kanon, but at this point I know the formula. There's nothing here that stands out. So all I really got was nostalgia. Maybe I shouldn't have wished to go back.

I don't really know how I feel about the anime's ending... It's a mix of sadness halfway through the episode and a smile in the final scene. Still, I truly fell in love with this anime even more after discovered Umi’s secret.

Just finished watching the anime and man now I feel so dead and empty inside. Alka and Pocket route broke my heart into a thousand pieces and I'm crying nonstop ever since then and my eyes and throat still hurt so much from bawling my eyes out and I can't even speak properly. I loved all the routes but what I loved the most was watching Shiroha, Umi chan, and Hairi spending their time together as a happy family. I had a big smile on my face throughout the whole time of it 💖

Umi chan was such a precious angel and I wanted her to be protected at all costs but the last two routes left me devastated and now I'm so depressed. But still I'm very grateful that I was able to experience this masterpiece in both anime and VN form. I bought both Summer Pockets and Reflection Blue during the last summer sale so I'll be playing both of them now because I need my happy ending in Reflection Blue 💖

I’m sorry for watching the ending of this anime so late. I was late because I needed to prepare myself mentally for a sad ending.
And sure enough, we lost Umi.
Umi had fulfilled her duty beautifully. 🥹
Even though at the end Hairi decided to return to Shiroha, we still don’t know whether Umi will be reborn through Hairi and Shiroha’s marriage.

Normally, I’d be upset if someone spoiled a story for me.
But for this anime, I actually felt grateful for the spoiler. I once stopped watching it because I thought the story didn’t make sense. At first, the heroine was Kamome, then it suddenly switched to Tsumugi — that’s when I stopped.
But after getting spoiled about the later parts, I decided to continue watching.
I went on with Ao’s route, then Shiroha’s, Umi’s, and finally finished it.

This anime could’ve been truly amazing if it had focused on just one heroine — Shiroha — and on the story of Umi and Hairi.

Lots of mixed feelings about it.

This is the series I struggled the most to complete and that lowered enjoyment. I think it was too long.

There were some very beautiful and touching moments but they were spread out among slow and very repetitive story arcs. My most memorable stories were mostly at the beginning and then it just got repetitive. I think second Umi's arc was unnecessary.

The ending is okay even though predictable. It's between 7 and 8 for me. It feels it couldn't have been better.

As an anime-only I think it was a good adaptation; it was understandable though many minor things are left unexplained or unclear in my opinion.

I'm using a translator so my English is what it is, sorry.

Here's how I understood the ending and what I think are worth considering (remember: I'm judging based solely on the anime itself; perhaps the VN explains it better):

From what I understood, Hitomi was behind this whole plan so that Shiroha could continue living without 'sacrificing' herself.

Hitomi is the ABSOLUTELY MOST IMPORTANT character because after her husband's death and after a vision in which she saw Shiroha die, she decided to turn into a butterfly and just like Kyoko (the main character's aunt) said she gained the power to see both the past and the future.

It is worth mentioning that young Shiroha misunderstood her mother; she disappeared not to meet her father, but to save her daughter from a fatal fate. This is very important. It's explained in a twisted way in episode 24 around 19:40.

When Umi made the decision to save her mother on her own at the end of episode 22 Hitomi uses(?)/helps(?)/pushes(?) [see the beginning of episode 23, Umi said that "something" was pushing her] granddaughter to go back in time and sacrifice herself for her mother giving her a wonderful vacation and "going outside to socialize." so that she doesn't get stuck in the past and mourn her parents all the time, which will prevent her from using her POWER and surviving. Grandpa Kobato explained that POWER HAS ITS PRICE.

In the last episode we got a bittersweet ending but Key does a phenomenal job on this aspect. It shows how much a mother's and a child's love means, and every mother wanted the best for her child unfortunately sacrificing herself.

In the 'true true' time loop Umi is gone but at the very end Hairi jumping out of the boat and meeting Shiroha may give the viewer hope that they will get back together.

Now, my two speculations:

First: I believe Kyoko knew everything from the very beginning, as she often spoke to Hitomi while looking at the sky. This suggests that she was at her house the day before she disappeared (before turning into a butterfly/using her powers) and revealed her entire plan to her. Since Kyoko wanted the best for her friend, she agreed to help her, deliberately distracting Hairi from cleaning the shed and working to her plan. I think Kyoko even said in one episode that Hitomi visited her because she wanted to learn about some ancient 'legend'.

Second: Remember how in Ao's route it was said that there were three sacred families who take care of the island? Sorakado, Naruse, and... I believe "the one no one remembers" are Kyoko's family, and my proof is that she talks telepathically(?) with Hitomi at the beginning of episode 18. But that's just speculation as it wasn't explicitly stated how the powers work in this show.

The anime is good, but no matter which studio adapts it I have a soft spot for Key Studio and Jun Maeda himself who is a musical genius.

No matter what anime studio they'd have to try really hard to mess up such good source material.

Episodes 18-26 were much better, but that doesn't mean that 1-17 were super weak.
