Fushigi no Umi no Nadia [Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water]
In 1889, the world was on the pinnacle of great discoveries in technology. In mankind's grasp for the future, a sinister foe known only as Gargoyle, obsessed with restoring the former Atlantean empire to the glory it once held, begins his plans to take over the world. Nadia, with the help of a young inventor, Jean Roque Lartigue, and Captain Nemo of the submarine Nautilus, must fight to save the world from Gargoyle and Neo-Atlantis. Based on the Novel '20,000 Leagues Under the Sea' by Jules Verne.

Okay, I could only find the trailer dubbed, which I DO NOT LIKE. I'm not even a dub hater, but oof.

Original Japanese opening (with subs):

Watch Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water (Original Japanese) on Amazon Prime through RetroCrush.

I'm old, so it has been about 20 years since I watched Nadia, and even then, Nadia was considered an old show. It was really good 20 years ago, and my guess is it still holds up.
Though holy f$#king Batman the Anno fingerprints even from that trailer. I had forgotten. I finished the original Eva series around the time I watched this so I might have just not noticed as much or forgotten about overtime. Nadia is a much more lighthearted and fun show though.

My other memory about this show is when I was in high school (in the late nineties, yes, I am that old). My friend was getting the laser discs of this show imported from Japan which cost a small fortune $200 - $400 each (and this was in late nineties money!). He was already taking Japanese at the local community college so could at least follow the show. But I could not imagine spending that kind of money even then on getting these disks. Media was much more expensive to get back in the day (hello Neon Genesis Evangelion VHS with two episodes each that cost $30 a piece). But Gainax and Anno were the big powerhouse names back in the day.
